  • Driving home in my ‘66 Buick Wildcat and the car sputtered and stalled. I pulled over and assed the situation. I describe my process during the breakdown, show the flat tow Roger provided us to get home, and watch me rip into this fuel system to find the culprit! How to remove a gas tank, test fuel pump, trouble shoot down the fuel system and all. The factory part number for the fuel pump is a 40250. #carproblems #breakdown #buick

      thanks man! I am going to tinker more this weekend and post what I find, since the pump and sending unit were ok I am thinking one of the rubber lines off the tank internally collapsed. Going to remove and cut them open and see...

    After I saw the fuel pump fail on Junkyard Digs's Wildcat when he was on power tour. I started keeping an extra fuel pump in the trunk. This year will be my Wildcats 3rd power tour in a row. Gotta love a Wildcat.

      Right on man, in my 16 years of wildcat ownership I have only ever seen 2 in person (of any year wildcat 2 or 4 door) and kevin is the only other '66 wildcat owner i've known of at least among us on social media, so thats rad to meet another wildcat owner! I am going to test my stock pump I pulled off in this video and keep the new one I bought as a spare too.

    I stumbled across this yesterday when looking for old Wildcat ads. I have a '66 Wildcat Custom Coupe in red with black interior. 425, AC, PW, PS, PB, and power seats. Bench seat, wish it was buckets with console. Was originally sold on Broadway Avenue in NY NY. The original owner's son had it and his wife didn't want it in the garage any more so he traded it to a concrete contractor for some work. I got it and a '69 Impala drag car on a package deal in late 2020 from the contractor. Cars were near Chicago at that time. The seller was selling both to fund a race trailer for his grandkid's midget race cars. Sold the Impala because I really only wanted the 'cat. Have since put a couple new Flowmasters and some exhaust pipes on it. Repainted the centers on the factory chrome road wheels and put new redline tires on it. I took an old Sears 8 track player out of it. Replaced the door sills, and trunk weather stripping. I want to get the power seat fixed, put in a carpet kit in the trunk and maybe either a new Edelbrock carb or fuel injection. I think it has been repainted and the carpet and vinyl seats look too good to be original. My favorite thing about the car is that you never see them at car shows. I've had a Mustang, GS400, 2 GTOs, Riviera, Cutlass, Grand Prix, and they are a dime a dozen at shows. I enjoy your videos. My car didn't start last time and you've given a great tutorial on what to look for. Looking forward to the conclusion.

      Super cool story man and thanks for sharing all that, you’re 10000% right about the rarity of the wildcat. They may not be rare $ wise yet but in the 16 years I’ve owned it I’ve seen 2 in the wild, both ironically on Long Island where I’m from and my wildcat as well. I only know of 2 other wildcat owners who post on social media about theirs, so yea they are cool to have as few own them! Glad my video may help you💪🏼🏁

      @@FanelliRestorations It's funny that you say you've only seen these on Long Island. Mine was sold in New York City. I don't understand why they don't go for more money. Buick build quality, awesome styling. Choice of two big V8s, sixes not even offered. Prestige cars, not Skylarks or Specials. I bought the Wildcat and the Impala for $30,000 for the pair. $2200 to ship them to Sacramento. Sold the Impala for $14,500 so I am only $17,700 into it plus the few things I've done on it. Had a friend offer $40,000 for it. I declined. They are too hard to find. Took me about a year to get this one. Quick story about Dave Kindig. Saw him at the Sacramento Autorama a couple years back and was wearing one of his T-shirts. He said "nice shirt". I said "I know where you can get one".

    • @FanelliRestorations
      @FanelliRestorations  Рік тому

      That is funny, must be us New Yorkers loved wildcats! I don’t get it entirely either but I think it’s just due to them never having the fame of other muscle cars of the day, maybe it was too big but certainly style power and quality was there. That’s rad about you staying true hanging on to it. And 😂 about you and Dave

    The tank is not getting air. So the tank is getting vacuum. So the pomp isn’t strong enough to get more feul. So that rubber lines are the issues. Check that first before reinstalling the tank

    • @FanelliRestorations
      @FanelliRestorations  Рік тому +1

      I appreciate the insight, but you can see around 37:00 the tank has dual vent hoses in the top left corner. I didn't pull them to inspect if they are clogged/collapsed but I will now to check that off as an option, thanks! I am thinking the rubber line that went from the sending unit outlet at the tank around the axle to the steel line is internally collapsed so we shall see.

    I would have done things the same way as you did. That tank is in great condition for it's age. I didn't think the lobe was out as the electric fuel pump you tested with wasn't pulling gas either. What a bizarre problem, looks like whatever the problem is, is a one in million problem, just like the ones I seem to get stuck with - at least we know we aren't the only ones that get the one in a mill things happening to us (except for lottery tickets). Like someone else said here, maybe something stupid like a vent on the cap plugged or maybe your car has some kind of one way valve on the vent line(s) somewhere.

    • @FanelliRestorations
      @FanelliRestorations  Рік тому

      thank you! yea it really is this car is so very original and in great shape, amazing it's a NY car. Yea it isn't the typical things so far, it's either gotta be the rubber lines coming off the tank to the solid steel line along the chassis with an internal collapse or the vent lines are clogged, the return line, etc. Something is either causing pressure issue or line blockage cause the sender and pump seem fine! will post another video soon after tinkering this weekend

    You are missing the little stand for those spark plug wires. It bolts on to the valve cover and the loom slips over the top, keeping your plug wires elevated off the linkage. I'd send you a link but I couldn't find one, might be a junkyard part. Thanks for the video!

    Not That bad.... That's why I got the rock of my fleet my 87 ramcharger and a tow dolly..... The last time I made mister hook cry was in the 90s when my fuel pump went bad in my 76 charger at a McDonald's drive thru pushed it forward and got a $13 fuel pump and had it changed in 20 mins....when the hooker came it started right up! Boy was he mad that he made the trip for nothing lol it would had been a $300 tow cause of the ritzy township I was in...tools and spares are always in the trunk got to be catastrophic for the hooker to win around me!...all cars talk and tell you what's up I had a 75 gran fury singing from the water pump of course I ignored it a long time then finally it seized and took the belt my buddy got me a water pump and a belt and off down the road I went big block mopars are easy when it comes to water pumps...you got an old car listen to it when it says hey I need some attention lol 😂 mopar or no car!.... And the hook well let's say we are not close friends 😂

    Check your fuel cap. Is it vented or non vented ? I had a 69 Buick that fuel pump was going bad and would quit and eventually would crank again.

    • @FanelliRestorations
      @FanelliRestorations  Рік тому

      good idea but don't think that's it. it is a non-vented cap, original one and been on the car 16 years i've owned it. The tank is vented tho as you see in the video with those two lines in the upper passenger side corner of the tank.

    • @FanelliRestorations
      @FanelliRestorations  Рік тому

      No I got it from O’Riellys wasn’t easy to find in their system so I had to cross reference and research and what I found worked however as seen in the video it routes the fuel lines in a bad orientation off the pump to the carb so you have to re-route your line up to carb. It was a carter 40250 or on eBay there’s factory ones that you won’t have to re-route and they’re a 40033.
