    We are Rocky Mountain anglers who came out from Colorado last September to fly fish the Salmon Run. We had a great time on your home waters. I would like to comment on how nice, helpful and friendly people generally were to us in the parking lots and around town. Had a fun time fishing the Salmon top to bottom and hanging with the locals at LD's.

    Hi Zana, Love your videos! This how to set up is great! I love the idea of using a fly reel on the noodle rod too! I have never done that and want to try it. My question is: What size fly reel do you use and how many yards of mono line do you put on and is it tied to a standard fly backing (20 lb) ?
    Thanks so much!

    I travel from here in Ireland annually to fish the salmon river in the fall, like everyone I have taken basic advice and honed it to my liking. I use a braided line as it has high strength and no stretch, I use a swivel to change the braid to mono and tie in a sacrificial piece of mono to the swivel to hang the weights off, that way if it snags in rocks and breaks off, its no big deal to retie and get fishing again quickly.
    But the big thing is to get up there and out on the water, talk to people and get advice. Don't be afraid to try something different, but DO PAY ATTENTION to the rules!! You don't need the DEC guys writing a ticket and ruining your day.
    Stay safe yall.

    • @TheSalmonShop
      @TheSalmonShop  3 роки тому +2

      I usually pinch a very small split shot on underneath the big weights to grip the line and hold them in place, that way I don’t have a break in the line that causes a weak point. But in the late fall when the steelies are in I do your swivel trick since I drop down to fluoro leader and it works great for them!

    Coming up that way for the first time this fall (I usually salmon fish the lower Niagara). I thought I saw somewhere that you had to have a "line break" (a knot of some type) in the setup. You didn't tie one in this video and I looked up regs and not seeing it there either. Am I just missing it somewhere or did I misunderstand what I saw? Maybe this was an old reg and it changed?

    If you're using a swivel and leader leave a tag end at the swivel and secure your weights to it. A simple granny knot will keep them from sliding off. This way if they get hung up you usually just loose the weights.

    Polimer knots and Uni knots etc are for straight shank hooks and Snell knots and Egg loop knots are for bent eye hooks. You used a polimer knot on a bent eye. When used properly it keeps the hook lined up with the leader and not bent in or out from the line. Not using the right knot for the hook type is a good reason why people don't get a solid hook up and lose the fish. Lose a fish in Alaska with a group and you are buying a round of drinks.

    Great video! If I want to use just my regular fly rod can I just use the plastic eggs with a hook & no weight or should I go for some actual flies like wooly buggers & egg sucking leaches?

    • @TheSalmonShop
      @TheSalmonShop  3 роки тому

      You can use either, it doesn’t have to be flies on a fly rod but the two flies you mentioned are both really good ones. If you aren’t using any weight you’ll want to look for areas of river where the water is low and slow. You really need to get the fly down in front of the fish and that’s hard to do without weight on your line.

    How's the salmon fishing right now? Thinking about going and salmon fishing for the first time. Is the only thing I need is a new York fishing license?

    • @TheSalmonShop
      @TheSalmonShop  3 роки тому

      Yes you do need a fishing license for the state. You can go to the NYS DEC website and do it online or get one in town or at a NY Walmart sports section.
      Then the gear you’ll need to get a line in the water as well which if you don’t have that I recommend getting it at a store in Pulaski. The rods we use are pretty specific to this fishery but you can get a 4000 series spin reel pretty much anywhere and as long as it’ll hold around 220 yards of 10lb test mono and a 3 ball bearing system it’ll be okay for the river. 8-10 at fly gear works as well.

    I need guidance on what type of rod , bate, set up I need to go salmon fishing and where can I go to buy it it at I'm from New York city.

    • @TheSalmonShop
      @TheSalmonShop  3 роки тому +1

      If you have a Dicks Sporting Goods near you or Cabela’s they might the best bet. Each one has different products so I’m not sure what the selection is like but you’ll be looking for a 9’- 10.5’ light spin rod. The line rating should be somewhere around 6-15 test rated. Make sure the rod isn’t a bait caster. Then you’ll want a 4000 series spin reel with at least a 5 bearing system and 12lb monofilament line (I recommend getting this in Pulaski so it will be fresh line). If you can find #2 octopus style hooks they work very well. Split shot for you weight, size #2-#4. And imitation soft plastic salmon eggs. 8mm in size and I’d go with red or orange color to start. Waders as well and my preference is felt bottoms or metal spiked bottoms so that I don’t slide as much in the river. This is a personal preference that works well for me.
      Now all that being said, there are a few stores in town, including mine, that have all of these products to take the guess work out of it for you so you know you’re getting what works well. And if you get your gear in town and something breaks you’ll have an easier time getting it replaced and be able to fish instead of having to wait until you’re home to replace a broken rod.
      Hope this helps!

    hey Zana, great video!
    but this is a flossing rig, if you do intend to floss just use a big thin gauge circle hook, It will never foul hook them and you / your cusomters wont have to deal with snagged fish.
    You could just tie them egg flys or any fly pattern for that on a less absorbent material such as rabbit fur which would keep the hook neutrally buoyant, your clients would hook tons of fish all in the corner of the jaw .
    You could use a centrepin reel instead of a fly reel, this would allow you to drift longer stretches without adding slack / smooth drift.

    • @elisaunderlin9624
      @elisaunderlin9624 3 роки тому

      The finless will not all the way eliminate the spin but it does drastically reduce it. The main purpose of the fins is just convenience of taking off. Of course I wouldn't be shocked to find that other reasons also apply to the fins.

      Mine is a 7/8 wt but you can vary that depending on how much line you need. A 10/11 would be too big in my opinion but to each their own. With a fly reel and mono you can fit a lot of line on so you don’t have to go too big.

      4 feet is the maximum. Some people use a tapered leader (9 feet for example) tied to a tippet ring or swivel. Then a 4 feet (or less) tippet from there. The split shot goes above the connection. A lot of people use mono or fluorocarbon tippet.

    Please educate people on the use of float rods and center pin reels. It is angling in its purest form and far more productive than bottom bouncing could ever be. Once mastered, float fishing out produces bottom bouncing ten to one, counting legitimate hook-ups.
    Tight lines and far more important... respect the river.

    I don’t mean to disrespect you. But is it real ? I mean that simple ? I normally run 30-40 lbs braid with 20 lbs bumper and 15 lbs fluorocarbon, for salmon, and 10-12 lbs for steelhead. With 1/2 -3/4 oz pencil led or cannon ball. I lived in Seattle. But I’ll give try this technique, learn something new everyday 😊

    If you just put your slit shot on the line it will slide up and down and when you get it stuck you will lose both the hook and the weight as you yank it loose. People, use a triple swivel with a snap hook attached to one of the eyes and the leader and line attached to the other two. From the snap hook attach as small section of leader tied in a loop and to that attach your split shot to one of the lines of the loop. If you get it snagged on a rock guess what???? YOu just lose the weights and not the hook too. And, you won't be chasing a slipped split shot. OR, if you insist on using just one line, use a surgical tubing with 1/4 diameter pencil weight on the line. This way you can adjust the pencil weight so there is just enough weight that it is tapping the bottom by cutting some off. Slip the tube through the line then the pencil weight into the tube so the line get's pinched. You can also let it slide so you can adjust it to the depth. You want that weight bouncing on the bottom and your offering floating above. Fluro is abrasion resistant and SHOULD be used for your leader. Doesn't stretch as much either. Use the green.
