See the results of catastrophic cliff collapses in Torrey Pines in La Jolla, California, it’s truly shocking! Entire sections of the cliffs and bluffs have cleaved open and collapsed onto the beach, shooting debris all the way to the water’s edge. The landscape of the cliffs looks extremely different than it did just a few years ago, and it seems there’s more to collapse in the future. We are once again heading to Blacks Beach under the cliffs of Torrey Pines in La Jolla, but today we are walking down the lifeguard road from La Jolla Farms, and then we’ll walk north to Blacks beach itself. There are incredible estates up here, and these lucky few also get a key to drive down directly to the shoreline and park.
For the rest of us, it’s a short walk down, and very difficult walk back up, I almost prefer the steps. In the course of filming this video, several very dangerous collapses have happened just here on this stretch of the beach, and have nearly cut off lifeguard access multiple times. Not only that, there have been several stomach churning cliff rescues, one so steep the victim could barely be attached to a body board, and another that was interrupted by a large collapse of the cliff itself.
Clearly, it’s of the utmost importance to stay away from the edge of the cliffs, and choose a safe path to come and go from the beach. It’s more important than ever, with rising sea levels, to check the tides before you hit the beach. Many beaches that were above water at high tide now disappear all the way to the cliff base, this beach being one of them. While we do get wonderful stretches of low high tides and negative low tides, where the wide beach stretches out day after day, we’re getting more and more king tides which come right up to the cliffs and have even been flooding coastal neighborhoods.
You can see the way these estates are becoming almost cantilevered above the beach, and eroding out from underneath. All of the different layers of sandstone and clay are wearing away, and piles of sand, clay, and rocks are building up at the bottom, eventually getting washed away by the ocean. Water is seeping through the seams of cliffs and eroding them from within. Layers of sandstone are forming shelves while the clay and sand above and below them disappear.
Since filming this, there was a large and very dangerous collapse directly over the lifeguard road itself, and it’s very concerning that one day soon, this entire stretch of beach will lack any lifeguard access. Here at the southernmost end of Blacks beach the collapse is especially bad, this looked completely different just a few years ago.

Just a couple of years ago several beachgoers were buried and died when a cliff collapsed at Leucadia Beach.about 20 miles north of Torrey Pines.
