When I filed for my SS at age 62, it didn't take them 5 min. to determine the amount that would be deducted from my benefit due to the WEP, yet it is going to take a year to reverse it. What a joke.
When I qualified for SS in 2007, the WEP was immediately applied. The WEP is a formula. Why can’t it simply be removed? What I was supposed to receive is knowable. Why can’t SS just pay me that?
There are 60,000 Social Security Administration employees. If just 30,000 of them process the 3,000,000 WPE/GPO changes at 2 per work day they could get people their much needed money in a little over 50 work days, NOT THE ONE YEAR THEY ARE PROPOSING.
WEP adjusted your benefits because you had not complied with the requirement to become eligible for the 90% adjustment. HR82 validate your irresponsibility
Why are they insisting it needs to be done manually, don't they trust their computers? No one that I know of does this kind of thing manually in today's world, and there should be no reason for the SSA to insist that it be done manually. This type of work is made for computer use. It should not be done manually, that is where mistakes are usually made. In some unusual cases, someone checking the results might be necessary, but in the majority of cases the computer results are quick and accurate. Before I retired, we handled very complex problems with our company computers and mistakes were almost non-existent. The SSA should be able to finish this quicker then they are indicating is necessary.
I can understand the pension offset requiring manual effort, you have to, in a lot of cases, review divorce decrees, death certificates, etc. But the WEP should be just change a few lines of code and give people their normal benefit.
@ Abnormal or unjust. They agreed to WEPs eligibility requirements to receive benefits @ the 90% adjustment. So when they failed eligibility, why didn't they accept the consequences?
@zynxmynx69 Could you elaborate? Nobody agreed to anything with WEP. Many people did not even know WEP existed until they went to claim benefits and had them reduced. The law before was that benefits were reduced, and now they are not. There is a common misconception that people chose whether to go under SS. You get no choice, the job either is or is not under SS, and my experience is that the future consequences are not explained well for someone going to work in a non SS job.
If they don’t start paying until the end of the year then the back pay will be for 2 years , 2024 and 2025. I think it would be fair if they would back pay the full amount that they shorted everyone all the way from the retirement date that social security pay started. Now that makes sense , full back pay not just going back to 2024.
Yes that would be fair, but the law during those years included the WEP & GPO. So the SSA was just going by the law. As the law was changed now, they are required to pay the amount of the full benefit since the day the law was written, which results in a back pay of about a year.
@ Sounds about right, but HR82 still does nothing to stop income earned with 0 contributions into $$. They agreed to WEPs eligibility requirements to receive benefits @ the 90% adjustment. So when they failed eligibility, why didn't they accept the consequences?
A 1 year delay for the increased monthly SS check and up to a 2 year delay for the retroactive check is not acceptable! Make your displeasure known on the "contact us" page of the SSA website and email your elected House member and Senators requesting that they put the SSA Commissioner's feet to the fire in sending out our checks in a timely manner rather than delay them in a political stunt to get more funding and manpower.
Why is it going to take so long?I think they are just “stalling” because they are hoping it goes away. It didn’t take them but a few minutes to determine how much you would be getting after applying WEP/GPO. All they need to do is delete the program that calculates the deduction. I’m appalled at this excuse being given for the delay.
You are repeating what we already know. What we need to know is When Social Security is going implement the Social Security Farness Act.You repeating what all youtubers are saying. We need to know when the money is going too hit our accounts. That would be very helpful.
Asking SSA to do anything is asking a dead man…..hey, what happened? Go to the people we pay…any of the 535 can be mailed, a postcard is thirty-five cents.
The mechanisms are already in place to calculate benefits. It should be 'quicker' now that GPO is not applied. The only time-consuming task will be re-calculating some beneficiaries benefits and paying them the difference.
I’m currently being ripped off by the WEP law, I might add, “ Big Time “ So, Will the SS Administration notify me by mail? To let me know what my New Monthly payment?
Likely wil get a "letter" of some sort, but down the road may be a YEAR ?? Yeah that sucks, but me not so much as only get $250 (40Q) a month . 35 Yr FAA pension saves my *** . . .
WEP adjusted your benefits because you had not complied with the requirement to become eligible for the 90% adjustment. HR82 validate your irresponsibility
@ FACT: When you retired you had non-covered income, income that contributed 0 into $$. How is that a fact? Because that is exactly why WEP was created. You agreed to WEPs eligibility requirements to receive benefits @ the 90% adjustment. So when you failed eligibility, why didn't you accept the consequences? Sadly you and others like you, were fueled by your ignorance, produced vast fictitious opinions that only validated your lack of responsibility. Then you cry foul with, "it's not my fault, I contributed, so give me my money, cause it's not fair!"
Okay, so they cut my SS benefit by half when I was in the hospital January of 2024. Will I get retroactive payments, returning this half starting January of ‘24? I’m thinking so.
Look to your two Senators and one House members webpage. Only those three can be contacted via web. But do. Take a look around to note the Privacy form. On any matter, you’d need to complete and submit with any request he or she would make on your behalf. Electronic signature ok. If you put him or her to work, they need a privacy permission form found in the Member's page. You'll lose a week or more if they have to come back to tell you that they need the signed form. Other thing to note…where’s the field office. My Senator had five such field offices. It’s convenient in a shopping center office building, for me. When I went in, my problem with government agency….it went out that day. Staff was highly effectual and sympathetic, as they should be. If there were a line out the door, it would be a good thing. You need not travel to Washington, go to a field office. Remind him or her how many votes they have in your household. When I realized I have five …I never fail to mention. Five voters, we vote with our feet. SSA can provide an interim amount. Good faith payment, worry about fine tuning later. Write the check now.
My wife passed in 2013 and I was denied spousal benefits twice in 2013 because of GPO. Do I need to reapply for spousal benefits now that GPO is eliminated? I agree with those who state SSA should already know the amount we're owed. Why? Because HTH did they arrive at the diminshed amount we're being paid now. In my case I'm receiving 40% of the amount owed. Not rocket science unless they need to figure ways to pay us less.
When I filed for my SS at age 62, it didn't take them 5 min. to determine the amount that would be deducted from my benefit due to the WEP, yet it is going to take a year to reverse it. What a joke.
It's such a joke! They owe us small fortunes!
couldn't they at a minimum cancel the monthly wep penalty and start paying it out now, then go back and figure out the back payments ?
When I qualified for SS in 2007, the WEP was immediately applied. The WEP is a formula. Why can’t it simply be removed? What I was supposed to receive is knowable. Why can’t SS just pay me that?

@@SandfordSmythe But they applied the WEP immediately, but will take a year to figure out how to simply remove it? Doesn't make sense.
