Interesting - when you stop looking for dramatic interest. My impression is that Vivaldi had little sense of what's dramatic, but has lumbered himself with a silly plot. Here, isn't his music better as the end approached, and it becomes - in this aesthetically sophisticated production - a mood piece? When Shakespeare did his twins plot in '12th Night', that was perfectly worked and timed, but Vivaldi (or at least, in this production) puts us into the stasis of Illyria at the start of Shakespeare's play - love as the game that has gone on too long, the party you are too tired to leave, an addiction to sadness. By the last hour, I was no longer following the plot, could not tell who was who (the costumes and lighting conspire towards this), and just absorbed into the languorous mood and beauty of the music and the stage images. Wonderful performances here, amid the dreaming and mooching about. How clever of the production to let things drift so elegantly to whatever kind of ending that was!
so beautiful! Vivaldi is always amazing!!! And performing in Venice?! a dream!
Beautiful! The cast is wonderful and the staging, costumes and ballets very tasteful.
