  • As always, few things missing, few bolts not tightened to spec and a major F... up!

    Thanks for this video does help understand the timing a bit more , currently doing this on n54 timing chain along with cam ledges and front main seal

    IF we just want to adjust the timing of the Cam shaft and gears, instead of changing the timing chain, do you first loosen those two bolts in front of the Cam gears?

    So if I have my car at tdc but the QR codes don’t match how can I fix that? Like one is on the top but the other one isn’t

    I forgot to lock the crankshaft before replacing the timing chain. What happens if I forget to lock it? What should i do now?

    Can the chain be replaced without a chain pretension tool?

  • @stephenmckeown6361
    @stephenmckeown6361 Рік тому

    Hi, your camshaft locking tool has the extra piece of metal (11 4 282) on fork of the exhaust side. BMW manual states it should be on the fork of the intake side. Will this effect timing?

      Well the engine is running and driving with no faults and usually they throw VANOS and timing faults left and right if timing is just sliglty of, so everything is ok.

      Glad your engine is running fine. I done the the same as you but I get a camshaft out of tolerance error for the exhaust side 3 miles after a cold start. It disappears if I switch the car off and on but will re appear on the next cold start journey. I’ll try re timing my engine

      Also did you replace the Vanos sprockets? I didn’t, I just replaced the chain and guides

    • @mattwillow7
      @mattwillow7  Рік тому

      We didn't change the sprockets, but we had the same problem on n13, I m not sure which, but one cam sprocket needs to be done up before the other, othervise it screws up cam timing. Also we alway spin the engine 2 revolutions and if the locking tool fits there usually aren't any problems...

    I have a question bro , do you need to removed the crank hub in order to remove the whole timing chain correct?

    • @mattwillow7
      @mattwillow7  8 місяців тому +1

      Yup, that's correct. You might be able to do it with removing the front chain cover instead, but I can't really confirm that

      @@mattwillow7thank you so much for replying , I’m actually in the middle of this right now replacing my whole timing chain , front main seal as well

      @@mattwillow7I have another question bro , so I locked the flywheel to DTC and also used the pin BUT I did not lock the crank hub when I removed the middle hex BOLT because I didn’t have the lock tool for it .. could that have messed something up? Good thing I have the oil pan dropped just jn case

      @@boost7236 only thing you could have damaged is flywheel/flex plate or locking pin. Make sure to use some other way of locking it in place before tightening because you will brake something, locking pin is not srong enaugh

    • @boost7236
      @boost7236 8 місяців тому

      @@mattwillow7 the flywheel is still locked in place and also the pin is still in place , maybe I’m still good? Hopefully nothing got damaged , you think I might just have to adjust my timing?

    I'm in the middle of changing mine (N54) and I broke some stuff too 🤣. It Looks like I'm at the same spot as 11:55. My cams were locked but flywheel locking tool didn't hold so now I have a mess to deal with. Can you share what damage did you have and what did you do to fix it?

    • @mattwillow7
      @mattwillow7  Рік тому +1

      Just a bent locking tool and bent tab on flex plate, had to remove it and straighten it out a bit so id doesn't catch on anything

    • @nijazvelic8126
      @nijazvelic8126 Рік тому

      @mattwillow7 thank you! What about crankshaft? Was it still in timing? I'm worried that my crank is out of sync now because I made 1/8 of a turn when I heard bolt breaking. This is also confusing because cams were locked, and the chain didn't move, but the flex disc did. I guess I'll know when i drop the transmission.

      @@nijazvelic8126 yes, I had to do the timing again, but didn't undo crank bolt, just reset cam sprockets

    Can you do the timing with the engine in car

    • @mattwillow7
      @mattwillow7  Рік тому +1

      I honestly don't know since we still haven't completed the swap. It should be possible, but it will be very tight, if I was doing it in the car would probably remove the front end for easier access (bumper, radiators, support)

      Klar kann man es in eingebauten Motor machen … an der Kurbelwelle muß man gegenhalten und dan die schraube anziehen

      Yes, because it was not timed, chain snapped on this engine
