You know you can burn / break parts of the motherboard if you allow the fans spin freely with that canned air. They are spinning a lot faster than 100 % RPM would normally be.
thanks for the guide, the computer is working smoothly at a solid 60-70 degrees for my games now. Interesting thing is, ive had the computer for over a year, this is the first time taking it apart, and the gpu had the smallest amount of paste on it. Approx. 5 mm squared of the gpu was covered on only one corner, no wonder it kept heating up to 90+ degrees when playing games before. The guide was much appreciated, thanks again!
It’s like that but only for my cpu, my gpu is fine staying at 60-70 degrees but the MINUTE I fire up a game my cpu goes to 96c with all fans on max, (I went down into my laptop before, didn’t repaste, just wiped down the fans as they weren’t that dirty) also I’ve had this for a little over a year

Thanks for the video. Was just wondering if it's necessary or beneficial to replace the thermal paste on the VRM with the K5 Pro? Would just using thermal paste instead of everything work the same since it initially had only thermal paste? Thanks again, appreciate the help.
Hey this guide is completely incorrect. You are NOT supposed to remove the metal bit from the battery connector; simply sliding it back is sufficient. I popped it off completely on my laptop and shorted my mobo. Thanks a lot random youtube guy. Taught me what ought to happen if I trust random youtubers.
Thank you, Bob! I just changed the thermal paste for my G14 2020 after more than 2 years of continuous use, at least 8 hours a day. I used Grizzly Kryonaut for CPU and GPU, MX-4 for VRMs. Before repasting, the temperature is usually 65 - 75 degrees Celsius and now it's 50 - 60. The lowest I could get is 37 degrees Celsius when idle (Turbo, process power limited to 80%). My 2 years old laptop is now even cooler than when I first bought it. 😳
Looks like you did great! MX-4 may not be ideal for the VRMs but I can’t confirm with personal experience. I gathered that pastes like K5 Pro is preferred since it’s for that type of part. Unfortunately, it’s not something you can identify whether it’ll be a problem since those parts tend to lack sensors you can monitor with software.

Hey Bob! Is there any way I could ship you my Asus Zephyrus G15 and you could clean and repaste it with a new thermal compound? What would you charge for the process ? I dont want to open it as I'm scared that I might ruin it :/
Just completed this on my own 2020 G14 and the results are quite nice! Idle I was sitting near 50°C on CPU on idle! And 80-85°C raiding in FFXIV. So far, idle is down to 40-45°C and in-game FFXIV (idle in a major town with a lot of players) was at 62°C, so I'm sure raiding will be far easier. Not bad for what was already a heater when I first bought it. The paste was so flakey, so even the cheapie Corsiar TM-30 was a huge upgrade. I'll probably repaste with KPx later on once I have can get an order in.
@scarelebjd2983 Thanks for answering, I got Grizzly for CPU and GPU, and I'm gonna use K5 for Vram, this is gonna be the first time that I repaste for this laptop but did you see better temperatures after you did it?
Awesome video, would you consider doing the same for the new Zephyrus G15 in the future. It seems that some of the LM application is pretty poor, with quite high CPU temps especially. Thanks 👍
I followed your steps and successfully re pasted my laptop. I used Arctic MX-4 for the APU and GPU and I used K5 pro for the vrms and vram modules. I also replaced the metal lid because it was dented. I had to transfer the LCD, plastic bezel and hinges from the first lid to the replacement lid. I then reassembled the laptop and it worked perfectly. My idle temp went from 60 to 32 degrees Celsius and my gaming temp went from 92 to 52 degrees Celsius. Big improvement! Thanks for the tutorial Bob.
I don't know which one would be a greater risk: dropping something on the mobo and fry it or try disconnecting the battery and... fry the damn thing. Neither of these happened, but it needed a well magnetised screwdriver with the right size/profile. Lid LED and fan connectors are indeed super flimsy, but manageable with care. Maybe the most time consuming part was getting rid of the old paste from the VRM parts one by one, some still ended up between them anyway, a toothbrush and some IPA would make it nice and tidy but maybe next time. CPU fan worn out in 3 years' time so it's not that far ahead, these paper thin bearings can't take much abuse for sure. (vs. Da Brick T440p :D )
Glad to see you using KpX for repasting now. I had commented on an older video saying KpX really is the best thermal paste in terms of performance and no pump out due to it's high viscosity. I've been mining eth on my helios 300 with Kpx and over the past month of almost 20 hours of 100 percent load every day, it has held up very well.
I know i'm really late to the video... I got a strix G731GU (9750H & 1660Ti) Is K5 pro the best solution for replacing tha blue gummy paste/putty (VRMs, VRAM etc) ? I live in Greece so it's really easy to get the K5 Thanks in advance
Thank you for this super helpful guide! Just a heads up if your G14 has the AniMe LED matrix display: you need to unplug the connector just above the Wifi card. The cable runs through the right side of the cooler, so be extra careful when taking it off!
Thanks a million for this video, very helpful in replacing my dead fans and repasting my 4 year old system - running like it's brand new again! Only issue I came across was the screw for the wifi kept spinning and never actually lifted out, so had to resort to disconnecting the antenna wires. Bit of a pain with how tiny they are, but still worked out in the end. Thanks again!
Fantastic. I also repasted my Vivobook S14 ultrabook two weeks after buying one and installed a thermal pad to further spread out the heat from the heatsink to my metal back plate. Most ultrabooks have no warranty stickers on their cooling system because it's simplistic and isn't tied to the display cable or anything else important like in this laptop, which is great. 75C at 25W TDP on prolonged loads and my fan is barely spinning. (if the ambient temperature gets higher it would spin faster but that isn't exactly appreciated in an ultrabook that isn't a gaming laptop, is it?)
@@one_step_sideways Well it is good to perform a repaste. An ultrabook takes way less power than a gaming laptop that has a full dedicated gpu than a gaming laptop with a dedicated mobile gpu.
I wish I could but that was a review unit I do not have permission to do thermal paste videos on review units and that one was finally sent back sometime last year.
I have a question: why is it not possible to apply a thermal pad on the VRAM? I mean there are close enoughe to cut a 10x40 mm pad and place it there. As it is electrical noncunductive it should be fine to fill the gaps between the modules, right? And in pllcation for CPU and GPU is it possible to place larger ones to cover these full black areas?
Is this really generally useful after only 8 or so months? If so, is this usually a result of a poor pasting job at the factory, or just the constant use under high load?
I do wonder if applying clear acrylic nail polish to the capacitors near the battery cable would be a good option to prevent the lovely motherboard frying exercise. I’ve already fried one and I’m trying to formulate the best route forward to repaste this new setup. Any thoughts? I could temporarily use black tape to cover it, as well…
Hey, how did you get on with your repaste? I have been reading a lot of stories about people frying the motherboard when discounting the battery. Wanting to open it up and repaste but a little nervous.
Boy I am pretty sure this spared me all kinds of needless suffering ... hmm, ok, jinx alert!! -- I'm not done. Perhaps I am counting my chickens. Even so, whatever I just broke would have been just one of many breakages without your video! So thanks, kindly, for the detailed hand-holding and here's hoping the above was enough to un-jinx myself (well... not if I /say so/ as now I've surely re-jinxed. And I'd better leave it there, for reasons I am not at liberty to discuss! Sorry, up well past the hour of stupefaction here, please disregard all non-felicitous remarks above :P).
I did it! It's so much more complex than a PC, so it was a bit daunting, but in the end it turned out ok! Now let's see if I used far too much thermal paste, because the Arctic I used is a very goopy consistency and I think I way overdid it... time to monitor temps and hopefully I won't have to redo this. 😬😬

have you ever heard of this laptop only crashing when on the desktop when it's plugged into a power supply? I can start playing any game and once it's in fullscreen I can plug in the power supply and it will get its extra boost of power during gameplay, once I exit the game and go back to the desktop, it will instantly crash if I don't disconnect the power before exiting the game. I also noticed if I disable the GPU it won't crash if it's plugged into the power supply. Also not sure if this is normal for this tablet, but during gameplay it gets so hot on the top near the edge and around the top buttons, hot enough to burn the skin if you stay touching it..

Hiya. Followed your guide and all worked really well. One thing though, you can pull the paper back on the display cable side and tease the cable out of the channel in there and it means you don't need to remove the cable when extracting the cooler/fan assembly. I used the new MX-6 formulation and my temps before were at idle about 42 to 45 on the cpu and at load 70+ on the CPU and 76 on the GPU. Now, at idle with MX6 my temps are 32 to 36 on the CPU and at load approx 50 to 60 on the CPU and 65 to 70 on the GPU with it at full speed, no throttle. Very impressed.

Hello, which thermal paste did you use for the G14?
@@edwinsanchez8698 I used K5 thermal grease for the majority of the repaste, but Thermal Grizzly for the thermal paste.
Thanks 👍
Is it reasonable to use noctua NT H1 instead of K5 pro on vram and stuff cause I don't have access to all that.
I did the same thing, but the laptop does not turn on, the indicator LEDs do not light up either
What could be the problem?
I accidentally made the contact of the metal clip of the battery to the pcb now my laptop is not working what to do pls help
Did you find any solution?
any suggestion for thermal paste for g14 in india
Hello other than kpx and phobya due to not be able to order to Greece .Which else thermal paste for laptop do you recommend?
Welp I messed that up somehow 😭
How is the thermal result compared to stock paste?
I followed your steps and successfully re pasted my laptop. I used Arctic MX-4 for the APU and GPU and I used K5 pro for the vrms and vram modules. I also replaced the metal lid because it was dented. I had to transfer the LCD, plastic bezel and hinges from the first lid to the replacement lid. I then reassembled the laptop and it worked perfectly. My idle temp went from 60 to 32 degrees Celsius and my gaming temp went from 92 to 52 degrees Celsius. Big improvement! Thanks for the tutorial Bob.
sounds off, that is a huge and unlikely outcome
@@ddroz23 if you say so

@@puryteevee sorry to hear that buddy, even though these are small things we should never do our own 🥲
Never drop like that the metallic lock on the battery connector, you could trash the motherboard
Should I take all the way out then?
No, you should slide it until the connector gets free. But the metallic part must stay attached
What if I use electrical tape around the connector to avoid accidents?
I saw that many made that mistake and now their laptops don't work
@@JavierContreras678 I do that!
Thank so much for the guide. It worked perfectly and went from 94 F to 52 F playing world of tanks... 🙂
Did you use k5 pro? I play wot as well lol
some grizzly thing...
I've been mining eth on my helios 300 with Kpx and over the past month of almost 20 hours of 100 percent load every day, it has held up very well.
i dont think pump out happens if the load is constant, pump out should be result of cycling?
Hello i need help, is it a must to disconnect the battery before applying thermal paste?😢 I'm sacred of frying my motherboard
how? i dont understand, did u read about it somewhere?
@@hen005 there are chances of shorting the mother board if not disconnected properly
I know i'm really late to the video...
I got a strix G731GU (9750H & 1660Ti)
Is K5 pro the best solution for replacing tha blue gummy paste/putty (VRMs, VRAM etc) ?
I live in Greece so it's really easy to get the K5
Thanks in advance
I did a repaste of my hp omen 17 at purchase. Performed an undervolt. The system runs at 60C under full load. 36C idle.
What should I did if I stripped a screw?
I did. Take a file and file it into a flathead screw.
Hi Bob, Can you do the Eluktronics Mag-15? I think now is the time people start to changing their thermal paste.
I wish I could but that was a review unit I do not have permission to do thermal paste videos on review units and that one was finally sent back sometime last year.
@@BobOfAllTrades Oh ok too bad, thanks for replying!
So guys, how many of you ended up with broken laptop as me ? I guess metal plate from battery destroyed my motherboard…
Ah, my reference video when I obtain this bad boy. Thanks Bob. 👌
Hi, anyone knows if silverking of thermalright is compatible with this laptop??
I think I can do that
Do you have to remove the ram? Took it to a shop fo this because I have shaky hands and he fucked my ram slot and said too bad
Need help. Do i use thermal pads or thermal paste on the chips around the CPU and GPU. And do i need a special kind of thermal paste?
Is it better to use liquid metal?
No.
the CPU and GPU fans are this laptop is garbage. Going to replace it myself , thanks for the sweet vid bruh
What vacuum did you use in this video for cleaning the fans?
It should be within the storefront linked in the description 👍
@@BobOfAllTrades I checked the storefront and it doesn't seem to be there
If this pasting stuff works, then why don’t it come pasted from stock? My ignorant mind needs some education. Thanks in advance
Is this really generally useful after only 8 or so months? If so, is this usually a result of a poor pasting job at the factory, or just the constant use under high load?
sorry for replying 8 months after the question but if its still relevant...my answer is a combination of both although it is 90% the latter
Dont. I just fried mine 💀
If you don’t properly plug in display port will that make the laptop not power on?
I'm going to repaste my g14 when it's it of warranty, which is in may 2022
Thank you for the tutorial. I repasted my 2020 model and its running nice again. The old past was complete powder.
After what period should i change thermal paste on my g14? I Play game on external monitor and cpu gets to 80-90C. Its been four mounts since buy.
could I pay you to do this for my zephyrus g15? Too nervous to try this on my own haha

@@MiraakYT my warranty was out already, and the service center I found myself could not fix it.
@@sasha_chudesnov but did they tell you what part was affected and what they did to fix it?
I did it! It's so much more complex than a PC, so it was a bit daunting, but in the end it turned out ok! Now let's see if I used far too much thermal paste, because the Arctic I used is a very goopy consistency and I think I way overdid it... time to monitor temps and hopefully I won't have to redo this. 😬😬
Can I know how much gram of thermal paste needed for all the ic and chips
Do you have any videos comparing longevity vs performance of the kpx to something like Arctic Ice MX-6?

Did it help with the high temps?
@@Finaciallearninghabits Immediately.
The liquid metal left a corrosion mark on CPU and factory GPU paste dried up after something like 9 months.
TBH, I did had to re-apply it yesterday, but I was pushing the machine with Cyberpunk recently :P
Did you use liquid metal?
@@JavierContreras678 no. eff liquid metal - the bother with cleaning it out is too much.
I was wondering why I only have the sodded RAM registered after the paste change and one little droplet got lost and it found its new home on RAM socket, shortening the circuits till I've spent an hour looking at the broad, eventually finding the more shiny spot with a flash light
I've used Arctic MX4. sure - it doesn't have the same performance, but it's good enough
Just redid my laptop and now I'm reading how k5 pro boils and creates hot spots. Just wondering if anyone has experienced this.
have you ever heard of this laptop only crashing when on the desktop when it's plugged into a power supply? I can start playing any game and once it's in fullscreen I can plug in the power supply and it will get its extra boost of power during gameplay, once I exit the game and go back to the desktop, it will instantly crash if I don't disconnect the power before exiting the game. I also noticed if I disable the GPU it won't crash if it's plugged into the power supply. Also not sure if this is normal for this tablet, but during gameplay it gets so hot on the top near the edge and around the top buttons, hot enough to burn the skin if you stay touching it..
yes happened for about 1-2 month before I realized I was so fucin dumb, basically the battery link to motheboard comes loose, it's so weird but it happens, jjust bring down power to 20% or less remove and re add the wire to the socket the issue will go away.
Do we need to spread the paste before installing heatsink i saw se other they are spreading it over cpu and gpu with spatula is it necessary ??
shorted my laptop doing this when i got to the battery part, thanks a lot man, i just got the laptop too and ive been saving for 10 months working non stop for it. thanks man

he mentions to be careful because if the clip connects with the motherboard it can short
I unplugged my Wi-Fi cards the two little black and white pin clips they won’t go back on any suggestions??
It can be difficult for sure. Something very flat, small and firm to press it down evenly.
Awesome video! You made it super easy to follow and you made my repaste a million times easier. Thank you
is there no way to see what the temp drops were? cant find the info anywhere and this video doesn't say. great guide though.
Noob question why did you use the K5-pro and then the Kingpin? Could you not just use the same one on all components?
Each paste is made to be specially used on specific parts.
Is the newer g14 from this year identical to this one under the hood?
2:45 Supposedly the M15 has liquid metal TIM. I wonder if Asus is just as sloppy with the bigger laptop...
very scary...
i know, it was terrify as is my first time.
Seriously, no thermal results after? How much did temps drop?
I don’t know. It wasn’t my laptop and I didn’t have access to the OS. She doesn’t monitor temps but said it felt hotter and was louder that it was when she bought it from me.
