Joe Flanigan's STARGATE Crash Course (Dial the Gate)

- JOE FLANIGAN had no idea what he was in for when he was cast in the role of Major John Sheppard on STARGATE ATLANTIS. It was 2004, SG-1 was a smash hit on cable, and Flanigan would be headlining the brand new spin-off show. Not only was he not much of a sci-fi fan at the time, but he knew next to nothing about what Stargate even was.
Those first few months were a crucible, as Joe explains to "Dial the Gate" host David Read - not only landing the role and shooting the pilot, but endless comparisons to Richard Dean Anderson's character of Jack O'Neill, plus getting to know the universe as a newcomer. Then came San Diego Comic-Con, and Flanigan's first encounter with Stargate's huge, built-in audience.
This clip is from Dial the Gate's full-length, more than 90-minute conversation with Joe! Watch the full conversation here: • 004: Joe Flanigan, "Jo...

THANKS FOR WATCHING! Here's another clip from David's conversation with Joe Flanigan, talking about the advice that SG-1's leading man Richard Dean Anderson gave him when he was first cast on Atlantis: ua-cam.com/video/2yo4Njtgdxs/v-deo.html
*Yes I keep coming back as much as you do I think **#Darren** **#GateWorld**.* 😉 🤣🤣🤣😂😆
*What’s going on with **#DavidRead** **#Darren**❓We haven’t heard anything from him in a long while now.*
Joe really made the show, with "Sheppard and MacKay" two of the best characters on Atlantis. I would love to see him return even as a guest on another Stargate series!!
The dynamic between those two characters did a lot help me invest in the show.
When McKay was put on Atlantis, I groaned -- loudly and sadly, but...
Hewlett did one of the most incredible and subtle character portrayal changes I've ever seen. McKay in SG1 was, IMO, actually evil. In my mind he would've let or even helped Carter die, being a hateful, malicious, spiteful, cowardly, ..., bastard with no remorse just to "show her who's best." Hewlett as Atlantis' McKay did ?something?! that changed him to actually become sympathetic-ish (more so over time). He was still cowardly, vain, arrogant, and assholy(tm), but there was something in his portrayal that washed off the slime and hate. It was subtle, mostly something in his eyes I think, like a "spot the difference" game with a forest with one leaf moved a millimeter. He was 99.99% the same and yet 100% different.
He became one of my favorite characters.
Saw him in one episode of Fringe.
@@davep8221 Rodney is like me , I don’t have a citrus allergy though.
@@davep8221 Looking back at his appearance in SG-1, they really wrote a bad character back then. They were so married to the idea that it always had to be either Carter or Daniel (or Jonas) to solve any problem that wasn't solved by shooting.
Being arrogant is a flaw, but it's an understandable flaw. Someone who would usually figure things out and needs to use their elbows to make sure everybody understands that it was them will be - or at least come across as - arrogant. But they will have "earned" arrogance to the degree where we can excuse such arrogance. In SG-1 however, McKay was always automatically wrong - given that Carter and in the second episode he was in Carter and Jonas both had to be correct (with Jonas even still making his case for being on SG-1).
In SGA, he was allowed to be correct, so we could overlook his arrogance. And as other people's appreciation of him grew, he had less and less need to use the aforementioned elbows and could mellow a bit. Arrogance is caused by the feeling that you need to prove something to others, but everyone already saw him as a genious. You can even see the nuance later on: With Carter and Keller around, he again felt it necessary to prove himself before he felt accepted again.
Funny how he describes his impression on starting and that's very much how Sheppard approached the stargate program, he came in all like, nope not interested.... oh ok this is different, maybe it's for me. So glad he got the part, Atlantis is the one show I feel didn't get proper closure.
Well said! xD
The ending made me so mad. Really? Just up and left Pegasus and landed on earth? What about the wraith?! What about all the humans?! Or the ones that Michael turned and are now hybrids?! The ending makes me so mad...
Agreed. But at least it’s ending wasn’t as bad as Lost. I still own all seasons of Atlantis while Lost I do not.
@@MaximumWarp2099 Yeah I get the point.... they're LOST ;-)
probably took it from his own personal experiences and adapted it for the show
Loved Atlantis. I’ve always thought the premier was one of the strongest of any show I’ve ever seen. Wish we could have gotten the follow up movie to cap the series after it ended.
I really wish they would complete Atlantis. I only just finished the show today and it was goddamn fantastic, it needs to be properly finished and continued.
He honestly looks great. He held up well over the years.
@Neil Rosenau Richard Dean Anderson is also 17 years older than Joe Flanigan...
@Neil Rosenau I believe one of the reasons he left the show, other than spending more time with his child, was the fact he was tired of training and Keeping fit all the time.
SGA wouldn't have been the same without Joe and David.
Agreed. They were a great combo.
in my humble opinion, it was that chemistry, humor, & unlikely friendship between shepard & mckay MADE that series what it was! ...so thank u guys!
I love how he becomes the thing he never cared about. 😂 also it’s really cool he didn’t take direction from Jack’s character. Sheppard was definitely his own man and I’ve always loved that.
Joe was my favorite stargate actor. After this interview, I like him even more. We need more Sheppard.
Joe, you had me from the first episode. Well done!
I like Joe, he is one awesome and down to Earth dude. Plus he is a fellow Irish-American. 🇺🇸🇮🇪
He said the show kinda makes fun of itself, talking about how ridiculous the situation is in the show, that's what made it work.
Real people talk like that in extraordinary situations. When they call BS on something hugely unlikely to happen, that's *exactly* what we do in the real world.
It's what made it so fun and funny. I saw comments on another video that people hate the new scifi stuff because it takes itself way too seriously. I agree.
I'd have to say the Stargate series was/is my favorite sci-fi.
Joe Flanagan was great in atlantis his character Sheppard was amazing loved him in the show
That absolutely amazes me that joe didn’t watch any of jacks work before doing the episodes. He really brought everything that we wanted from jack while bringing his own Sheppard character to life too. I really appreciated him as Sheppard.
I wish the ride for SGA wasnt so short! It deserved at least 10 seasons. :(
Just went through the Stargate Atlantis series I love it I watch it every now and then good entertainment and your friend again still a cutie good grief LOL
I just hear Todd's voice saying "John Sheppard".
shhhhhhhhhhhheppard
David-you are a natural, not stiff like some interviewers. you ask the right questions in a friendly way that I can tell people open up to you! kudos for Dial The Gate…!!!
*The World Does Need It’s Story Tellers‼️*
Great person and Actor! I am so happy they are still together in SEE - Jason, Jack and David
Thank you so much David and team. This was very insightful! I very much enjoyed seeing Joe Flanigan and to learn how he felt initially to when he learned more. Very thankful!
Y'know, for all the talk of Chris Pratt taking over the role of Indiana Jones the past few years....honestly my choice was always Joe. If they had rebooted the franchise after Crystal Skull, that is. He would have been perfect. I can still see it now, even though he's older.
Great casting idea! Hard to replace Harrison Ford. Goofy Chris Pratt won’t work for that role.
Hes still younger than harrison was for some of the movies...and he doesnt look old..seems much healthier than average..and he actually would be great for the role
@@norml.hugh-mann yeah I know he is considerably younger than Harrison, but my point was he would have been perfect for maybe 2010 casting and a World War II era indy. If they reboot Indy today, in the next few years after the last movie comes out in 2023, It's a certainty that they're going to go back to the beginning. I don't think they'll follow an older indy and tell stories from the 40s and 50s.
I think about it every time I rewatch Atlantis. It's crazy how good he would've been in the role. He would've fit like a glove. He's got all of the traits that Harrison Ford brings to Indiana Jones which so many other actors lack.
Agreed 100%. If joe shaved his beard he would look 10 years younger!!
Boy this hasn't aged well
What a great character Shepherd is and how Joe portrayed him. Last week SGA finished BUT I was thrilled when series 1 episode 1 started again. I think John S &Jack O that's double L bounced of each other so well.
The all star gate I love the most Stargate Atlantic I wish can see them again in new episode specially at Joe Flanigan as John Shepher
Fantastic interview! Joe Flanigan seems like a real cool guy IRL too :D
Really, really good interview and I'm only half way thru. He comes thru as, well, unlike some of the other actors you've had on.
John Shepard is one of my favorite characters from Stargate!
I miss shephard. What a great guy.
I can't imagine Joe go to Star Trek. Joe will always be Lt Colonel John Sheppard but it will be interesting to see Joe Flanigan as a StarFleet Captain.
Joe was my favorite in Atlantis, then David, & Jason., Rachel & All wraith characters.
I cant stop watching sg1 i want that exact show back actors n all lol....at least those who are still available
That was fun!! Been wondering what Joe's been up to...
Bet it absolutely blew his mind after the pilot, and then arriving to see all those people
we need him back
This guy is perfect to play han solo.
And this is why you must subscribe. Brilliant content as always.
Thanks for watching, Kavir!
Im so happy i got to grow up with Stargate :) brings fourth fuzzy feelings in my stomach
What about the previous three?
I always wondered how Stargate Atlantis would have been different if Ben Browder had been able to star as John Shepherd like they wanted. Because he didn’t just audition for the role, the role was essentially made for him. They literally created the character with him in mind. And who would have played Cameron Mitchell instead, or would we have even gotten to see that character even?
Love Flanigan and RDA
More Atlantis and More More More Flanigan!
I like a lot of sga shows john Sheppard one of the favorites was the Vegas episodes. The one with the little 👧 girl also.
Actually I wouldn't mind to meet Joe for real and do some climbing or sports together while talking about his role as Mr. Sheppard and SG in general. Bring back the good stuff 👍
He's not a colonel anymore?
I'm glad Joe went his own way without the weight that following after RDA would have been. I'm glad both shows were able to have a unique vibe.
built in audience yes, but as many shows recently have well prouven, that audience is there for mabe 3 episodes
it's'your job to keep that audience, and ho boy did the atlantis crew do a good damn job !!!
realy hopeing to see joe in any new tv show/movie, can i suggest "splinter cell", "spec ops: the line" mabe, something perhaps "Frontier space" between the expanse and firefly
Ben Browder was their first choice but he was filming The Peacekeeper Wars.
Joe has grown a magnificent beard since stargate. I'm so used to him having stubble or 5 o'clock shadow but not a full beard.
He's right about the different vibe. Atlantis had a cafeteria.
He didn't want to be like Jack, yet he became like his sibling on Atlantis.
hopefully stargate returns before JOE FLANIGAN gets too old
In real time Joes character is as clueless as Shepherd was to the Stargates after getting clearance 😅
Awesome 👍
Omg! Sheppard!
It's funny how the smallest acts in our lives change it forever.... not to mention the lives of others...
is there a link between Major John Sheppard on STARGATE ATLANTIS and Mass Effect Sheppard?
My favourite Atlantis main roles: John Sheppard , Rodney McKay & Ronon Dex :D favourite supporting roles: Todd , Lucius Luvin & The Whale
It's funny because Joe and Sheppard are not too far apart it seems :-) Great casting! David Hewlett and Rodney McKay are a bit more different but David likes and is interested in tech and it showed!
They couldn't have done better with the casting for Sheppard. I have really enjoyed Ben Browder's role in Farscape and sg1 and he possibly could have done the role and other big names in scifi could have approached it but i really did enjoy Joe's John Sheppard. I think he's in my top 5 characters of all-time from any genre.
God it look like Daniel, ohhhh i misss him so much!!! Daniel my Bruder........
Imagine living in one of the terrible alternate universes where Joe didn't get the part of Sheppard.
Funny thing about Ben Browder is that I think John and Cam are written as very similar characters yet I can't imagine him playing John.
I can see Browder as the military lead in SGA, he would have been a different John Shepard from the one we got and a very good one I believe. But I'm glad Flanigan got the part because he was great as well. Browder is probably the only other who could have done it. Ok maybe Adam Baldwin...
Jon Sheppard was an amazing character. Smart, funny and brave. He was equal to Col O'Neill tbh. Atlantis was canceled unfairly. It had another 5 seasons easy left in it
I loved Atlantis. I loved SG1 a lot too. But Atlantis was like... mine. I loved it. I was horribly upset when they canceled it so abruptly for the junk that was stargate universe. I wish even now it had been given at least another season to end in a more efficient manner.
6:21 Oh, now I see it.
Joe played himself under a different name. That sure explains a lot.
and still is so come on amazon hurry the hell up kree!
Does anybody know yet if they are definitely bringing stargate back?
*No Amazon hasn’t said a word about it yet.*
@@jamesfcarlton6890 not sure amazon will let this franchise die like mgm did. so many fans around the world with so much money to spend... a good thing for us if the show is good quality.
@@mulderx2525 *Indeed as Tel’k us to say.*
How does he get his hair to go like that?
Here in the UK,the Final episode finished Friday, and Hey PRESTO...its Started AGAIN From SeasonOne ,on the SAME channel....WEIRD..FYI,your ENTERPRISE with the Flashing lights is Distracting...WANT ONE?
Damn he's old. In the show he looked like he's something like 25, but bro was almost 40 :O Even in this video he doesnt look like he's almost 60
I hioe they start Atlantis back up he still could do the part as well as Jason cmon Atlantis pt 2
What's this, an stargate talkshow?
If SG1 was Superman and SGA Batman. Would that make Stargate universe the watchmen.
All these years and his hair maintains the same hair style...
Bring Tod back!!!!
Tod MVP
Damn he aged well.
Wtf is it called "whos jack oneil" ?
... Did you watch the video?
@@GateWorldDotNet seemed to be about Sheperd
The "wtf" should say. "Why" typo
Probably unpopular opinion but I liked the character of Sheppard better then that of O'Neill
Wow. I wonder if there was a video on UA-cam that was like.... You know. THE last nail in the coffin of the Stargate franchise.... What would it look like?
Too bad he couldn't sign on time contract, saving SG Atlantis.
He looks like he could still star in a series today. He honestly looks better than O'Neill did at the end
KOLYAAAAAAAA
Sg1 and SGA had pretty much the same vibe but SGU’s darker fell turned me off.
I liked John more than O'Neill
Silver fox.........too much
always amazes me when non-scifi people end up nabbing a pivotal role on a big scifi show. When successful, it really highlights their skill.
Uhhhooohhhhohohoho, Daniel my Bruder!
