Really excited about the new Laowa 10mm F4 cookie lens just released (available in RF). It gives a R7 user a relatively cheap ultra wide lens - much needed for the occasional architecture or interior shot
*Exactly* the sort of definitive testing I was hoping to find (in fact, even better). I shoot a lot in 4K-60fps and your video shows exactly why I need to stick with my R6Mii. It was either buy an expensive lens to round out my full-frame kit, or go with the R7 and stick with a pair of very nice APS-C lenses. Where 4K-60fps 'line-skip' mode in the R7 is plainly inferior to the choices I have with the R6Mii, I'm back to buying an expensive full-frame lens.
I LOVE the the heat/temp meter the R7 has. Having an actual visable scale that allows you to see just how cool or hot the camera is in real time...is brilliant. I wish Sony would put this on the A7S-III and A7-IV
What I did is I adopted Sigma 18-35 to my R7 and created custom modes for videos: 24fine, 50 uncropped and 50 cropped. I can quickly switch between them - best quality in 24 fine, but when I need extra punch in, or slow motion, I go to another 2 modes. Cropped in Sigma is the equivalent of 50-100mm on Full Frame! And that's something.
Well, not really. 50mm on a full frame is 50mm and you can take portraits with that. What you have is 18mm that is only cropped to fill the frame same as a 50mm would, but it is still a 18mm focal length. I don't know anyone who would take portraits with 18mm focal length, unless you don't like bokeh, and love elongated faces/noses.

Hi Josh! Is the 1.8x additional crop for the 4K60p crop mode calculated as added on top of the 1.6x (ie 14mm>1.6 22mm>1.8 40mm) OR is it 1.6+1.8x =3.4x crop combined so (ie 14mm>3.4x 47mm)? Hope that made sense. Basically if I had a 14mm EF L lens would it turn to 40mm or 47mm on the added 1.8x 4k60p Crop mode? Lastly, can we shoot 24p on the 1.8x 4K crop mode as well or do you have do shoot in 60p for the added crop?

I was planning to buy an R6 later in this year, but it has a few limitations in video that I'm hoping the R7 doesn't have. Also curious what the IPB vs IPB-Light would be like with motion in the video, I expect not much difference in low-motion scenarios since you don't need as many bits to record that. Thanks!
You can set the top dial to AV or TV and shoot videos. I compared the IPB vs IPB Light with little to no motion and they looked identical. I haven't tested it with a quick moving subject.

Hi Josh, do you have any idea why my R7 doesnt show 60FPS in the movie quality menu? Only 25 and 50 are available in all 4K modes; latest firmware 1.3.0.....
So, this one does have a 4K 60fps uncropped mode? I've seen mixed reviews about this aspect of the camera. I thought that the only 4K60 mode was cropped.
Thanks for doing all this video's for the R7. I had a question regarding the R7 I do own EosR and I only shoot underwater videos with EF 8-15mm I really need 4K60 and the R6 is not option for me because it will not fit in my underwater housing. Do you think the 4k60 on the R7 will looks better then HD60 on the R?
Just what I needed! I'm on the verge of buying a new cam and I'm guessing between the Panasonic S5 and the Canon R7. I'm a Canon shooter and I have the Canon 5DmkII and the 6D. A bunch of Canon lenses and other gear.
Should you expect better low light performance on the 4k60 normal or 4k60 crop? You'd think the uncropped would be better but if it's line skipped, it might not be making use of that bigger sensor area? What do you think? Thanks for this video!
@@buckeroonii 35mm * 1.6 * 1.8 = 101mm. 18mm would be about 52mm. None of these will have the look of 101mm or 52mm on a full frame. Focal length is more than simply filling the subject in the frame.
@@buckeroonii You said it. Read your original comment. In your mind you're getting a 50mm+ look with a 18-35mm lens. In what world is that possible?! 35mm is 35mm, not 50mm+. Applying the 4k60 crop to 35mm lens fills the subject in the frame same as a 102mm lens would on a full frame, but the depth of field, distortion, and compression is still of a 35mm lens, and thus it's an entirely different look. You must be a noob, so what I'm saying to you makes no sense, but one day you will understand, son.
Do you have a preferred clog3 cinema gamut to Rec709 conversion lut? I’ve been trying a few different ones but haven’t found one that knocks my socks off yet.
Can you test the R7 for usability, such as if you use feature "A", do you lose feature "B"? - For example if you use an hdmi monitor with and without overlays (unclean and clean) do you lose touch tracking? Do you lose eye AF? Would this also hold true in 4K Fine or 4K line skipped and at 24fps vs 60fps?
Agree on this, would be cool to see those usability test results. It’s the case with Sony when you lose AF features, I’d like to see how the R7 works paired with a Ninja V.
Really curious about the rolling shutter performance? On the R6 and 1DXIII it’s laughably bad so im curious how this is? And oversampled images sometimes have worse rolling shutter so I’m curious how your experience has been? Awesome content man🙏🏻
Thanks! I haven't tested it because personally I do not care about rolling shutter for the kind of stuff that I shoot. I'm sure the rolling shutter is probably not good in this camera due to the oversampling.
Its 31ms in fine mode and around 14~ms in line skip. Thats pretty nasty compared to Fujifilm XH-2s but with Fuji you get worse AF, worse IBIS and working with a lot of outdated glass not made for video whereas R7 has a huge backlog of EF-S lenses
Cards vary a lot. You need to figure out the actual sustained write speed for the card. It's not usually the one listed on the card, that is often the max speed. You can find the bitrates for the different modes and codecs on pg. 14: downloads.canon.com/notthistime/cameras/better/EOSR7_specifications-5-22.pdf
The one thing I’ve been wondering about is rolling shutter performance. With the 4K line skipped mode, should the read out be a lot faster than the 7K over sample (to the point rolling shutter is not an issue)?
The not fine 4k still has rolling shutter issue but it is very less noticeable. You would need to be panning uncomfortably fast for it to look as bad as 4k fine. Enabling clog on 4k fine does make it a bit worse probably due to cpu being busy or something. The issue is still present at 1080p, so it seems the read out time has some kind of floor where halving the number of lines to read has no effect.
Ah, I should say: I tested it using the very unreal panning back and forth really fast method. It may really not be an issue on real world usage :) Its a great camera, loving it
I have problem with R7 Clog3. Video clips won't playback on PC with VLC and when dropped the clip into Davinci Resolve, DR only see sound but no footage. I would like to know what I've be doing wrong here. BTW Video clips with out using Clog3, there are no problem at all.
Hi. If u use Davinci free version, Davinci shows all 10bit video files (Clog3 HDRPQ) as an audio file MP4. U need to upgrade DR free to Davinci Resolve Studio
I noticed the Line skipped 4K has a lot more noise compared to the fine setting, as youtube adds artefacts in its upload, can you confirm if the out of camera footage is more noticable with the noise, I notice a lot of Canon cameras that aren't their top end cameras have a lot of noise in the images one way or another.
Oversampled images on the same camera will have less noise as the noise is more compressed and finer. Here are two videos of mine where I talk about that when comparing the low light capabilities on some cameras: ua-cam.com/video/CvnUzDMxLA0/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/u00WB58Q5s0/v-deo.html
Can you explain in more detail the the 1080p 120fps setup? I don't understand why it claims to record in 120fps and then delivers the output in 30fps. Why not just go to 4K 60fps?
It's just a weird quirk/limitation of this camera. You need to go into the menu and under the first screen you change "High Frame Rate" to On. This puts it in that 1080p 120fps outputting in 30fps. It also only does timelapse in 30fps.
@@Josh_Sattin I have shot a few 120fps tests and the super slow mo playback looks great in Davinci Resolve. Do you mind please clarifying what it means that it is recorded in 120 but output in 30fps. Is that common for cameras and would we notice a difference if the record and output frame rates were the same?
It's a weird quirk in some of Canon cameras. As mentioned above, when you put it into the high frame rate setting it shoots in 120 fps but produces a file that is 30 fps. It is slowed down 4x in the camera. I needed to reduce it to 80% to play back properly in my 24fps timeline.
the 4k fine looks so much higher in quality when you pixel peep but I tested the difference in the rolling shutter effect and it is so much more intense on the 4k fine. I've been trying to find solutions to get the 4k as close to 4k fine in quality because I don't like the amount of rolling shutter, but I can't mimick the quality of it. does anybody know the numerical difference in rolling shutter between the two?
You're welcome. I definitely hope to make that video. The list of videos that I want to make is getting pretty long right now. Here is a video that I did about color grading: ua-cam.com/video/7jTNKmXrxwg/v-deo.html Thanks for watching!

OH MY GOD, I was waiting for this video for so long, I LOVE YOU damn. Now could anyone help me understand if the 4k60p-no crop is usable in a somewhat quality production (like wedding)? And do you think the difference it's that noticeable when mixed with 4k24 fine footage? Because side-by-side I find it really awful, but maybe a more experienced eye can tell me that it will be ok after the post-production ahah Any opinions would be helpful, this the only thing holding me back from buying this camera...
Glad this video was helpful for you. I can't really answer your question because everyone's level of acceptance and quality is different. It also depends on how the project is being delivered. Hopefully you can get a good sense of this from this video. Thanks for watching!
can u do a test video of the performance of each 4k setting at a higher iso level? since all cameras and even cellphones do great in brightly lit situations. as a wedding videographer, sometimes i have to raise iso to 6400 on a f2.8 zoom for dances/reception. it would help to know whether to use 4k60 line skip or 4k60 crop & change the lens for these situations, or maybe non of the options r usable and 4k30 fine in a 24fps timeline for 80% speed slowmo is the only option
I made a detailed video testing the low light capabilities of this camera: ua-cam.com/video/gc-9YMb3Pn8/v-deo.html I think it will give you a good idea of the limitations. Thanks for watching!
The issue with crop modes is lens limitations. Lens only have so much resolution they can output. Using low quality glass might actually look worse in fine detail mode (crop mode)

So, this one does have a 4K 60fps uncropped mode? I've seen mixed reviews about this aspect of the camera. I thought that the only 4K60 mode was cropped.
Yes it has an uncropped 4K60 mode but it is line skipped. Also, remember it still has the 1.6x APS-C crop.
You're welcome! Well you can shoot 4K60 on the R7 and only 1080p60 on the R, so yes the R7 should look better.
Just what I needed!
I'm on the verge of buying a new cam and I'm guessing between the Panasonic S5 and the Canon R7.
I'm a Canon shooter and I have the Canon 5DmkII and the 6D. A bunch of Canon lenses and other gear.
Nice! Glad this video was helpful for you. Thanks for watching!

Do you know the overheating time for FHD mode I would really would like to know
Should you expect better low light performance on the 4k60 normal or 4k60 crop? You'd think the uncropped would be better but if it's line skipped, it might not be making use of that bigger sensor area? What do you think? Thanks for this video!
Can you make some videos with R7 4k at 60fps with cars ?
Always a good job
Thank you
Thank you so much!
Thanks again for this video, and inspired by your findings - I like the 4K crop/60 with the sigma 18-35, as I like 50mm+ look and can slow it down.
Not a 50mm look. You're simply cropping a 18mm look.
@@vitaminb4869 if I'm zoomed in at 35mm, with a crop on the sensor, how is it a 18mm look?
@@buckeroonii 35mm * 1.6 * 1.8 = 101mm. 18mm would be about 52mm. None of these will have the look of 101mm or 52mm on a full frame. Focal length is more than simply filling the subject in the frame.
@@vitaminb4869 cool, but who said anything about full frame? is this some kind of camera nerd bot I'm talking to?
Unfortunately I don’t. I just grade my Clog 3 clips manually.
I really hope with firmwire updates we will get better option in video.
Is there a reason why r7 records 4k50p in HEVC and r6m2 records 4k50p in mp4? Which is better ?
Fuji xt-4 vs Canon r7 , which one is better ? Somebody help me
Can you test the R7 for usability, such as if you use feature "A", do you lose feature "B"?
- For example if you use an hdmi monitor with and without overlays (unclean and clean) do you lose touch tracking? Do you lose eye AF? Would this also hold true in 4K Fine or 4K line skipped and at 24fps vs 60fps?
Agree on this, would be cool to see those usability test results. It’s the case with Sony when you lose AF features, I’d like to see how the R7 works paired with a Ninja V.
can you change white balance while you are recording ? or canon still has this stupid limitation ?
Really curious about the rolling shutter performance? On the R6 and 1DXIII it’s laughably bad so im curious how this is? And oversampled images sometimes have worse rolling shutter so I’m curious how your experience has been? Awesome content man🙏🏻
As bad, in my experience
It’s bad, but not sure if it’s AS bad.
@@bryanbuff true, I didn’t run a side by side test
Sweet, this is great info! Now if only it did 4K fine @60, I would want no more!
Yeah, that would be nice.
Now if I could get my hands on an R7
I hope you can get one soon!
Thanks for video 👍

SD card v30 will be enough for this camera? Or the 4k 60p with C-LOG will not work properly?
Cards vary a lot. You need to figure out the actual sustained write speed for the card. It's not usually the one listed on the card, that is often the max speed. You can find the bitrates for the different modes and codecs on pg. 14: downloads.canon.com/notthistime/cameras/better/EOSR7_specifications-5-22.pdf
@@Josh_Sattin what card do you use?

It may really not be an issue on real world usage :) Its a great camera, loving it
Can you show me how to set 120fps for Canon R7 , i could not find 120fps in menu . Please help me . Thanks
Menu -> Camera -> 1 -> High Frame Rate -> Enable
Thank you @@Kulagin.Production
Alright, good video's helpfull concistent. i ll sub mate!
Thank you so much for the support!
Here are two videos of mine where I talk about that when comparing the low light capabilities on some cameras:
ua-cam.com/video/CvnUzDMxLA0/v-deo.html
ua-cam.com/video/u00WB58Q5s0/v-deo.html
@@Josh_Sattin Thanks Josh. Video is not my strength, so your guidance is very welcome.
@@Josh_Sattin interesting. Thanks Josh
good job. this cam would be great if it fit my hands. too small with no grip

@@Josh_Sattin did you sell the R5C? If so how much did the market give you? Still trying to get my funds together.
This camera got crop in every 4k mode? 25fps? 60fps?
No. You can record uncropped oversampled video in 4K 24/25/30.
I noticed my v60 cards can't handle the video in this camera at all lol time to upgrade yay
Could you recommend some good ef-s lenses for video for the r7?:)
ua-cam.com/video/L4o3nXrz3_Y/v-deo.html
the 4k fine looks so much higher in quality when you pixel peep but I tested the difference in the rolling shutter effect and it is so much more intense on the 4k fine. I've been trying to find solutions to get the 4k as close to 4k fine in quality because I don't like the amount of rolling shutter, but I can't mimick the quality of it. does anybody know the numerical difference in rolling shutter between the two?
okay so im confused, so i can shoot in 4k60 normal with no crop besides the 1.6x APSC crop?
Yes but it is line skipped and not oversampled.

I got the r7 as a c cam to my c70’s but it’s a bummer that it has the line skipped limitation at 4k 60p uncropped. Although it doesn’t matter much to me as I’ll be in 24p almost the whole time I use it lol

You can't shoot in 4K fine with a crop. You can only shoot 4K60 with a crop.
josh can you do zv e10 and eos r7 side by side must be awesome! thank you in advance!
Unfortunately I don't have a ZV-E10, but the R7 will blow the ZV-E10 out of the water for video because of it's ability to shoot 10-bit 422.

does the canon r6 mark 2 line skip in 60fps?
The R6II does not line skip in 4K60. It oversamples from 6K.
RE IPB/IPB Lite: For talking head type videos, IPB Lite is likely fine, but if you have shots/scenes with a fair amount of action, the IPB will look better.
Agreed. That's why I mentioned that this was a simple test and that the IPB Light might work great for talking head or interviews. I also mentioned that more testing is needed. Thanks for watching!
Because side-by-side I find it really awful, but maybe a more experienced eye can tell me that it will be ok after the post-production ahah
Any opinions would be helpful, this the only thing holding me back from buying this camera...
Glad this video was helpful for you. I can't really answer your question because everyone's level of acceptance and quality is different. It also depends on how the project is being delivered. Hopefully you can get a good sense of this from this video. Thanks for watching!

I wonder why no camera seems to record on 1440p🧐
can u do a test video of the performance of each 4k setting at a higher iso level? since all cameras and even cellphones do great in brightly lit situations.
as a wedding videographer, sometimes i have to raise iso to 6400 on a f2.8 zoom for dances/reception. it would help to know whether to use 4k60 line skip or 4k60 crop & change the lens for these situations, or maybe non of the options r usable and 4k30 fine in a 24fps timeline for 80% speed slowmo is the only option
I made a detailed video testing the low light capabilities of this camera: ua-cam.com/video/gc-9YMb3Pn8/v-deo.html

any overheating?

the 1080p was so soft I thought it was just out of focus.......ouch........
The issue with crop modes is lens limitations. Lens only have so much resolution they can output. Using low quality glass might actually look worse in fine detail mode (crop mode)
When comparing bit rates using static shot makes no sense. U need fast motion to see any difference.
Agreed. That's why I mentioned that this was a simple test and that the IPB Light might work great for talking head or interviews. I also mentioned that more testing is needed. Thanks for watching!
the 120fps is so bs. low bitrate and no audio. can only be used for gimicky set up scenes.
