    One of my favourite swings to watch. Always thought to myself boy he makes the golf swing look so simple. Never looks like much can go wrong, and in a game where there is no such thing as perfect you are giving yourself the best possible chance of being there abouts. Definitely trying to swing very similar to what you have spoken about, for me the real versus feel is next level. But that’s coming from someone who’s always been very disconnected and required a reroute and timing. Had enough of that, inconsistency and loosing golf balls 🤦‍♂️😂

      Built my swing around it knowing full well at that time that I will have limited time to dedicate to improving my swing mechanics so opted for a tried and tested simple swing method that has made dividends over the years with multiple times having small breaks from golf due to external commitments, didn't take long at all to get back into the swing of things so to speak 😊👍🏻

    Very interesting. I just saw a short UA-cam video by Gary Player that I think deals with exactly your point. He said he got this advice from the always terse Ben Hogan many years ago but was too dumb to get it. It was to keep the upper lead arm touching the chest on the takeaway and backswing. Precisely because keeping the lead arm away from the chest involves too many possible variations in how far away, and they all create a difference in the swing path. Maintaining that contact produces a reliable and consistent backswing and thus a more simple and reliable downswing, especially important when you are under pressure.

Hogan's book Five Lessons The Modern Fundamentals of Golf shows the downswing plane to be different then the backswing (page 89 in my paperback book). Downswing shallower and tipped to the right. As I mentioned, maybe I missed something (happens all the time). Excellent video. Nice ball striking.

    Thanks for this Jay. As I said on your community page, more coaching style videos about swing mechanics and/or short game tips would be great so I’m loving this content! I thought Hogan’s magic elbow started tucked in as well (something Pete Cowen also advocates). You don’t seem to do that so much although you are totally connected at the top. Is there a reason for that or am I misinterpreting?

    • @AskGolfNut
      @AskGolfNut  6 місяців тому +1

      Main reason George is due to my posture. I'm more bent from the hops so my arms hang vertically underneath my shoulders. Hogan's swing can used on soany setups. That's the beauty of its simplicity 👍🏻👍🏻

      @@AskGolfNut makes perfect sense. I’ve been working on staying more connected with the trail elbow but finding that I’m now swinging 5 or 6 degrees from the inside and can’t easily get closer to zero. Fine when the club face is slightly closed eg 2 degrees but when I leave it open I get massive pushes to the right and big hooks if I close too much. Definitely work in progress!

  • @Fractalgeek

    Love the tight right elbow.
    Wasn't Harvey Pennick's "magic move" getting the downswing with a left shift & clearance?
    The bit I'm never sure on is the wrist as you finish the wind up. It's easy to fan as you come back. Hogan projected the back of the wrist out - but I seem to hook if I do that. So I try to stay pretty passive

    • @AskGolfNut
      @AskGolfNut  6 місяців тому +3

      Wrist positions very much are dictated go by initial grip position and what is neutral for the golfer in question. Biomechanics dictates that neutral is different for us all.
      So depending on what your neutral grip is then the wrist conditions should follow that baseline. So one person's extension is another's flexion etc etc 👍🏻 key is to understand where you are outside of your baseline so that any changes you make or feel are done with the correct understanding of how that effects the club face 👍🏻

    • @AskGolfNut
      @AskGolfNut  6 місяців тому +2

      It's his connection to the body. Much is taught nowadays about maximising width in the swing for maximum power, yet for most it just yeilds inconsistency especially as most golfers haven't got 8 hours a day everyday to practice.
      Keeping the elbow connected through the whole swing into impact allows a simple swing back and rotation without adding extra arm movement into the timing of the shot 👍🏻

    Great video Jay. I’ve often thought when watching you “gee, Jay stands a long way from the ball at address”. To me it seems like you’re really reaching for it when most coaches seem to suggest that the arms hang more vertically under the chin.
    Firstly, do you agree with that observation? (Not a criticism - I actually love your swing, so compact and punchy).
    But if so, is that a conscious thing you’ve done as part of the flatter single plane swing? Is it just a by-product of it? Or is it completely unrelated?
    Cheers mate

    • @AskGolfNut
      @AskGolfNut  6 місяців тому +2

      Hi Cam, actually with irons my hands are underneath my shoulders and only into the woods does it slightly move away from vertical. It must just be the camera angle most of the time 👍🏻
      Really the main thing with posture and stance is teaching a balanced but able to be dynamic. For instance if one was standing nice and tall but weight on their heels then there is little chance for dynamic motion as they're stuck in posture even though their stance is relatively decent.
      Think of it as the receiving Tennis players stance ready to hit back the incoming serve 👍🏻

    • @cameronloveless1751
      @cameronloveless1751 5 місяців тому

      @@AskGolfNut sorry Jay, I described it poorly. Your arms are actually quite close to vertical as you said. But that’s because you have a lot of bend from the waist. A lot of coaches suggest a one hand width from top of grip to belt buckle, but I would say that gap for you is much larger. Again not a criticism - but I’m interested to know: Is this a conscious decision you made? And if one was to adopt a flatter single plane swing, should it be accompanied by more bend from the waist and a wider gap between grip and belt buckle? Thanks

    • @AskGolfNut
      @AskGolfNut  5 місяців тому +1

      @cameronloveless1751 ah yes, that is absolutely true. Initially back in my early years I suffered from an over exaggerated early extension that caused issues with handle delivery so I evolved a more bent over Keegan Bradley or Matt Kutchar type of bend, and it stayed even as the swing progressed. Again it's just one side of the totally acceptable spectrum of what works.
      I don't personally mind if some one comes in with either an Upright or bent over posture as long as their body can be dynamic and repeat the mechanics without fear of injury etc 👍🏻

    • @cameronloveless1751
      @cameronloveless1751 5 місяців тому

      @@AskGolfNut early extension is something I fight big time, so I will try this. My strike miss is nearly always toe (and sometimes an inch off centre). Initially my mind was thinking “hmmm…extra bend might exacerbate that miss-strike” but I know it’s the “standing up” with high hands and swinging inside the line that causes the toe strike. So yeah, will take this on to the range next time and see how it goes. • @AskGolfNut
      @AskGolfNut  6 місяців тому +4

      I guess thats where Coaching and Custom Fitting separate. Coaching is the individuals opinion on the direction to improvement. Ask 10 different coaches and you'll get a variety of different ways to the same destination. Custom Fitting in the other hand is very much so a science and so if done and measured correctly, asking the same 10 Custom Fitters and within a very small variance, they should all come up with the same answer.
      Personally I've always taught simplicity and with the constrained practice time availability that most people have, trying to remove unnecessary moving parts has always yielded quicker and more consistent results. 👍🏻

      @midhc5072 it should just be a case of understanding low point for the hybrid. As the clubs get longer and the loft comes off the variance always increases. Love your channel and gear content, I’m far from qualified to be instructing but at 4:28 your demonstration of moving the golf club head I think is flawed, what you are doing is simply increasing your right elbow fold without applying forces to the handle, but the best strikers of the golf ball have both accuracy and power by eliminating right elbow fold when possible (wide backswing) and dumping the right elbow angle as soon as possible to keep to the golf swing as simple as possible and to strike it consistently. Great example of the right elbow would be Nelly Korda and Tiger Woods swing in recent years when he isn’t stuck
    Anyways just food for thought should you head look into it, love your channel, love your content

    • @AskGolfNut
      @AskGolfNut  5 місяців тому

      But by keeping extension in the right elbow it causes disconnection between the arms and body. If you look at all top golfers and every good ball striker, their trail elbow is always tucked into their trail side (relatively speaking) at impact. All I do and Hogan is to get the trail side connection going as soon as the backswing starts.
      I'm not saying for a moment that all other golfers are wrong, far from it, what I am saying is, that any move where body parts move at either different planes to the core and even body parts moving in 2 different planes to the core at different times, it means a greater requirement for timing and practice grinding the motion into a repeatable swing. 👍🏻

    • @SanjuroCA
      @SanjuroCA 5 місяців тому

      "the best strikers...dumping the right elbow angle as soon as possible". That's not what they are doing. If you do that you'd end up casting the club. Tiger's swing: ua-cam.com/video/RZ4ZWQgLSus/v-deo.html

    • @AskGolfNut
      @AskGolfNut  5 місяців тому

      Not sure where casting would come from.... But Tiger goes from separated to connected to just separated just before impact.
      But the point is not in any way to say that Tiger and all that do things slightly differently is wrong, not at all and in any way. What I'm saying is with the connected, separated, connected and separated swing model, there is plenty of movements to time. Going connected nearly all the way through has much less moving parts for very very little drawbacks 👍🏻👍🏻

    • @metelnight10
      @metelnight10 5 місяців тому

      I agree with the connecting part and connecting the right elbow via tucking (external rotation, lateral move left and vertical drop back down), but the tuck can’t be done by increasing right elbow bend. Tiger even commented before on liking Max Homas cast from the top. AMG golf also has beautiful numerical demonstrations on what the right elbow has to do in the swing.
      Anyways your ball striking is far better than me and almost everyone else so I’ll just agree to disagree, looking forward to more content from you!

    • @AskGolfNut
      @AskGolfNut  5 місяців тому +3

      The right elbow doesn't necessarily increase in flexion, but it's location from disconnected to connected creates an unnecessary move for amateur golfers that have very limited time to practice. The beauty with Hogans swing is that it simplistic and easier to learn and practice. There may be small power penalty due to the lack of width but as he and I with the help of GCQuad showed that a higher club head speed with this narrower connected swing is easily still possible 👍🏻👍🏻

      For me there needs to be a tangible benefit to a swing change. Just moving the hands higher and separating them from your chest/should plane only serves to disconnect them from the body, so a drop or reconnection move is required in transition to get the grip into position. The wrist then need to behave to allow the club head path to be alongside or slightly under the grip/hand plane to not hit over the top fades.... Always have seemed to me to be overly complex, especially for most golfers that have very limited practice time 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

      Absolutely fine to do as long as the angle is removed before impact and otherwise it would cause an open face angle to path 👍🏻

      @AskGolfNut The first time I saw your swing, it reminded me of Hogan's ... more specifically, the wristy thing you do at the top.
      I have a short backswing (a la John Rahm) and tried extending my arc by doing the Hogan wrist thing, but it resulted in a loss of control.

      @AndrewLane-pm2ro it's due to the shorter amount of time you have to remove the angle before impact. As my backswing is longer, I have more time to get the wrist angle back out again 👍🏻

      @AskGolfNut Yes, a longer backswing allows more time to do everything ... including generating clubhead speed. 👍
      John Rham's is freakish in that he can generate enormous power with an abnormally short backswing ... which means he's abnormally strong!
