Thanks, yes it seems a common issue on these games. I guess it's the part that's doing a lot of the hard work as it's being used to create all of the voltages for the VFD.
This was the best VFD game ever made, even had stereo sound! i added an extra magnifying lens to mine made the screen look huge lol, theyre the mag lenses used in stationary applications, good bookshops sell them.what people dont realize is each c cell battery is 1.5amps, these batteries along with 2 amp D cells can destroy circuits like this in a flash if the batteries get installed wrong.
I did a BMX flyer on here, think I've got a super cobra but not looked at it yet, not got a Crazy Climber although I did have the original arcade board for it at one time though!
I replaced the same transistor on mine but the Select and Start won't work. Gave them a clean and tested continuity back to the main chip and all is good, now I'm stuck. Any ideas?
I can't remember the exact circuit but there will be two contacts to each switch. You could try and measure the start and select pins going to the IC while pressing the buttons to see if the voltage changes when pressed. I doubt it is the IC.

@@BuyitFixit Grab 3 games called BMX FLYER, SUPER COBRA and CRAZY CLIMBER, they are absolutely brilliant!
