Exactly! The trick with CROW was making this curved bottom with larger ply panels! That's what makes her easy to build because it otherwise would need to have been strip planked, taking more time and money! BestRoy
I would love to have the time (and gas money) to take CROW to such events. She might be a bit heavey to slide off the beach for the Everglades Challenge but Maybe two people and those rollers could do it? CROW is perfect for the Florida 120 or the Texas 200 ! We had our houseboat down in Port Aransas Texas for the first Ply-woodenboat Festival in 2014. Many would say how hot it must be in the cabin only to discover, once inside, that sitting in the shade with ample breeze flowing through open windows, our DIANNE'S ROSE was very cool. CROW too is like this and has lots of hatches and windows to open! With her cabin being insulated, you are able to sail her from inside the cabin, which is not the case for most small sailboats and is a huge feature if wanting to stay cool or if cool outside, wanting to stay warm! She draws just 10" and can sail into the wind in 12 to 16" with just her bilge keels (with her single leeboard down, she will point better in deep water of course)! She is a great boat! AllthebestRoy

I do too Rocky! IT sails well, gives the feeling of sailing a keelboat, while drawing just 10" with Leeboard raised! The Leeboard works for both tacks like a centerboard so is fuss free!!! CROW's cabin is spacious and you can sail from inside the cabin!!! This is very nice in cold or wet weather! I am a sailor at heart so love CROW but I also Love our DIANNE'S ROSE for Dianne and I to cruise! Plans available at RoyDesignedThat.com Rocky! Actually I took apart an old deck from a cottage that was to be torn down for the solid wood but, yes the ply was roofing 3/8" ply from a box store and was just $20 per sheet vs $120! That made the build possible vs waiting until I had saved up the money! With it all sealed in epoxy and glassed, the boat should last! Best/Roy
A bubbleproof method is to use a horizontal laminate roller. I have used this method on really big projects (like 60m windmill wings with up to 30-40 Layers of repair) and rarely I had to care about air pockets . Just a tip for your future builds.

I highly recommend it for those who love small boats beyond the article on CROW. Funny how there are times when the universe aligns! That said it can happen in the negative too. Once my buddy and I were riding home from playing tennis as teens with rackets and balls in my mom's bike's basket and this little kid through a tennis ball from beside his house at a car passing by! That guy almost killed us and certainly did not believe us that it was the innocent little kid in the side yard!!! I see how some could spend a lifetime in jail just because of such bad luck!!! Lol! Very comprehensive video. Nicely done. Wrapping the brushes in a plastic bag and putting them in the freezer for short work breaks also stops the epoxy curing. Have you looked at vacuum bagging for wetting out large cloth areas? I haven't done it myself yet, but it looks to be a really efficient method for large panels.
Freezer works but my wife won't allow it! Lol! And no I've not vacuum bagged but like the idea. I have a fairly good way to apply so not to use much epoxy. The troweled mix squeezes the glass down while using minimal epoxy until the cloth is cured to the hull. Then more thin coats go on from there. Best/Roy
Yes but in the form of gear and stores secured low in CROW's belly below the queen size bunk. 200lbs or so and she sails like a keel boat. Her form and 6 float chambers make her a safe stable sailboat. BestRoy

This is one feature I'm very proud of, that such a comfortable cabin can be arranged in just a 15' 8" sailboat! Have you seen that I can sail CROW from inside the cabin in bad weather Gary? I'm able to sit in shorts an a "T"Shirt, warm while my buddies are in their cockpits, cold and wet! They have commented on this with some jest mixed with slight envy when we have returned to port and I am waiting with just shorts on and they are freezing! Lol! BestRoy
What do you think about Matt Layton paradox?? I really like the design ,again sail from inside, but I was thinking about enlarging it by a ratio all round that makes it enough 2 feet at least length??
Neighbours above ground pool is there! The boat cost me about $1000 CAD but I scronged a lot of free stuff but did spend for epoxy and fiberglass to protect it!
@@hanoitripper1809 It is cheap and ideally the design will be built from marine grade ply but we were low on cash so I used PT deck wood I'd dismantled and $20 3/8" roofing ply. I did need to pick my sheets as there can be a lot of junk! I also had stripped an old sailboat and had loads of stainless screws and sail hardware! This helped keep the price down. I think if buying everything new it would cost four or five times as much. That said, you would have a good boat that can take you out safely and in comfort!Best/Roy
Great work ! Sorry for my dumb question because i am completeley new to this but i think you used standart plywood ( not marin plywood ) so is this safe to use standart plywood ? What can happen if your boat will sink in plywood ? Can sea water damage your boats body ? And last question what kind of sail fabric did you use ? Again sorry for my stupid questions :)
No problem AC... I used 3/8" Exterior grade Spruce ply used for roofs. The layers are bonded with waterproof glue (I did extensive boil tests to confirm). The ply sheets must be sorted at the lumber yard as some are sub standard so it is best to go to a bigger outlet where they let you pick your sheets! Also it is important to seal the surface with epoxy and when assembled, to fiberglass all parts to "encapsulate" the ply. It should not get wet at this stage so the boat will last! That said I do recommend using marine ply! I only suggest this method if you don't have the funds and would put off the build! Folks don't understand that time is money but money is not time! If the build is put off, valuable time is lost when you could have been out enjoying a boat! Putting off a build because of cost may nean never building at all! Sails were originally form a Bolger Design, Martha Jane that I was gifted. I was saving then for another build but decided to cut them and re sew to suit CROW. I'm still tweaking them but they are working well. BestRoy

@@hughbarned7660 No problem Hugh! Without questions we don't learn! As CROW is a Proto Type design, I used "free cycled" materials and 3/8" exterior Roofing ply to save the money I didn't have!! Lol! The ply needs to be carefully picked as some is crap but I got sheets with sound, small knots and no voids! It is made for roofs so will stand up but I did not go cheap with using polyester resins. Only Epoxy was used so she should last. As a proto type, I was not sure how well the concepts would work in real world testing and di over estimate how well the "Shallow Bilge Keels" would work! They did work though so it is impressive to be able to sail to windward in 12" of water!!! But CROW needed to point higher so I added the single Lee Board! It works like a center board so is no bother when down, working on both tacks! It has made CROW a great boat!!! She has turned out as hoped and I love camp cruising with her as she is beyond comfortable! She sails much like a keel boat, very stable and I can sit inside the cabin in bad weather with controls handy! She deserves more attention than she has gotten but give it time! All the bestRoy

A nice boat is a plus but if too much time passes deciding what the perfect boat will be, valuable time on the water is lost! So is the size of your shop the reason for the size of both boats? You mentioned that crow was bulletproof. I'm sure it was just a figure of speech when you said that because in reality fiberglass isn't really bulletproof by any means on the other hand if you had used kevlar cloth crow's hull would have literally been bulletproof. and those spatchlers your notching you can buy masons trowels with the ntches already pre cut that work great for fiberglass work.
Yes "bullet proof" is an expression Andy, but the latest video shows me sailing onto a rocky island. I mean grinding to a halt on the limestone shore! Not many boats will do that happily! I learned from young that "right sizing" is important! The size of my boat fit our needs and frankly do more for us that bigger boats would! There is truth that the use one gets is proportional to the boat's size! My boats have dual function spaces that make them feel bigger than the 15' 8" of CROW's length! BestRoy
Are you missing the "point" Matt? Lol! Keep in mind the bows bottom rises above the waterline intentionally so adding a point is another design as the hull would need to be different. Also that when tacking the angle is 45 degrees so the corner is breaking the waves. Buoyance is excellent. When running down wind in a swell CROW never roots into a swell wanting to broach she just rises and the wider bow has good volume. Also if motoring into waves she does not hit two sets at once with her short stance but rises to each rinding much like a duck. If breaking the very top of the wave may spray over the deck but the cabin gives good shelter to the cockpit and frankly I'm insid and dry if it is a problem. My wife met Karen, Matt's wife at about show and I had the pleasure of getting to meet Matt. I know his designs well and like the chine runners he uses. My shallow bilge keels have angle iron to add a similar affect. I can't comment about enlarging his design but will say that as with my boat having a point added, you are likely best to keep looking for a proven design that suits your needs. I will say for both Matt's and my design, the sailing from in the cabin is a great asset and makes sailing in any bad weather a breeze! BestRoy
It in fact does have a single lee board for better deep water pointing but the bilge keels do take her to wind by themselves just not pointing as high.
@@joeyadams8939 I really like how she turned out! Minimum size but with all the features we nee but might be tempted to add one foot for a bit more space on the back deck and the kitchen/head. That said the extra foot might take us over the weight limit of our six cyl van tow capacity and we'd be into large expense in needing a bigger tow vehicle. Also I might have a harder time maneuvering in all the tight places we explore! So overall, it has been "right sized" for our needs. Many have lengthened their builds and that working for them and is easily done with the plans given. BestRoy

It only cost me about $1000 CAD but I "Free Cycled old deck material and boat hardware for my build. I'd estimate the cost at about $3500 if buying new materials and depending if you are able to find a decent set of used Albacore 15 sails, which there are many Albacores out there so should not be hard to do! I also offer hints with the plans on saving on hardware etc. Bottom line is that there are boat/trailer/motor packages for sle cheap as some people just wan tto get rid of an old boat. While building I keep an eye out for a deal that suits my needs and often score loads of equipment and hardware and a good trailer! Often the boat is crap so I scrap it after it has been stripped. Hi Dr Wae, believe it, or not the build cost me only about $1000 CAD! I collected free Deck Lumber and other good wood from an old cottage that was going to be torn down! Hardware came from old sailboats that I stripped. I even got lucky and bonused sails from a boat that was left in a field for many years and had rotted! The sails were stored in a barn, in a good bag (no mice)!!! I had to resew them to suit my design but I think they turned out not bad. If building over a couple of years, you have time to collect things. Where I did spend money was on Epoxy and Fiberglass. I did not use cheaper Polyester Resin! Even the paint is mixed reminants from old cans!!! Hope this helps! AllthebestRoy
1500 lbs. CROW, handles weight well as the arched bottom with generous rocker likes it to set her down on her lines. As a camp cruiser, she has generous storage under the bed and couches that secure supplies and gear. Like a beach ball with a coin taped to one side, Crow with this weight so low, is very stable and sails like a keel boat. BestRoy

It cost me about $1,000 CAD and that was mostly for ply and epoxy. I had little spare cash so uses exterior roofing ply at about $20 a sheet and lumber from an old deck I had dismantled that was free but for my labor. I Epoxied and glassed everything, which was the bulk of the cost. Much of the hardware I had collected from old boats and I sewed my own sails! I designed CROW to use a set of Albacore 15 sails that are readily available and that would just leave the mizzen to source, which I give instructions how to make one from old sail cloth!
PL Premium Exterior Construction Adhesive is an expanding polyurethane adhesive that is good above the waterline! I did use it below as well but was sure to seal all in epoxy and glass to encapsulate the wood! Kept dry, it should last! That said I recommend epoxy as glue and sealer but built CROW with limited funds so tried this method as I also am capable of making my own repairs! Best/Roy
More than fair Mike but so you know we had record high water and the "launch" was back where the truck backed up too. I was actually on the drive part of the ramp! Normally with a normal slope the back tires are just in the water! But it does look bad, I agree! The boat has turned out very cool though. I can sail CROW from in the cabin, have camped aboard and been very comfortable inside the insulated cabin! She noses right up to the beach in most places so I just step on shore! I like that you curved the bottom. Softens the pounding and is much much stronger than a flat surface.

Yes but in the form of gear and stores secured low in CROW's belly below the queen size bunk. 200lbs or so and she sails like a keel boat. Her form and 6 float chambers make her a safe stable sailboat. BestRoy

This is one feature I'm very proud of, that such a comfortable cabin can be arranged in just a 15' 8" sailboat! Have you seen that I can sail CROW from inside the cabin in bad weather Gary? I'm able to sit in shorts an a "T"Shirt, warm while my buddies are in their cockpits, cold and wet! They have commented on this with some jest mixed with slight envy when we have returned to port and I am waiting with just shorts on and they are freezing! Lol! BestRoy

Neighbours above ground pool is there! The boat cost me about $1000 CAD but I scronged a lot of free stuff but did spend for epoxy and fiberglass to protect it!

@@hanoitripper1809 It is cheap and ideally the design will be built from marine grade ply but we were low on cash so I used PT deck wood I'd dismantled and $20 3/8" roofing ply. I did need to pick my sheets as there can be a lot of junk! I also had stripped an old sailboat and had loads of stainless screws and sail hardware! This helped keep the price down. I think if buying everything new it would cost four or five times as much. That said, you would have a good boat that can take you out safely and in comfort!Best/Roy
Great work ! Sorry for my dumb question because i am completeley new to this but i think you used standart plywood ( not marin plywood ) so is this safe to use standart plywood ? What can happen if your boat will sink in plywood ? Can sea water damage your boats body ? And last question what kind of sail fabric did you use ? Again sorry for my stupid questions :)
No problem AC... I used 3/8" Exterior grade Spruce ply used for roofs. The layers are bonded with waterproof glue (I did extensive boil tests to confirm). The ply sheets must be sorted at the lumber yard as some are sub standard so it is best to go to a bigger outlet where they let you pick your sheets! Also it is important to seal the surface with epoxy and when assembled, to fiberglass all parts to "encapsulate" the ply. It should not get wet at this stage so the boat will last! That said I do recommend using marine ply! I only suggest this method if you don't have the funds and would put off the build! Folks don't understand that time is money but money is not time! If the build is put off, valuable time is lost when you could have been out enjoying a boat! Putting off a build because of cost may nean never building at all! Sails were originally form a Bolger Design, Martha Jane that I was gifted. I was saving then for another build but decided to cut them and re sew to suit CROW. I'm still tweaking them but they are working well. BestRoy

I hope I'm wrong about this, and a little disappointed that you did not coat the entire inside surface of the ply and frame with a coat or two of epoxy after flipping the boat before doing out the build

@@hughbarned7660 No problem Hugh! Without questions we don't learn! As CROW is a Proto Type design, I used "free cycled" materials and 3/8" exterior Roofing ply to save the money I didn't have!! Lol! The ply needs to be carefully picked as some is crap but I got sheets with sound, small knots and no voids! It is made for roofs so will stand up but I did not go cheap with using polyester resins. Only Epoxy was used so she should last. As a proto type, I was not sure how well the concepts would work in real world testing and di over estimate how well the "Shallow Bilge Keels" would work! They did work though so it is impressive to be able to sail to windward in 12" of water!!! But CROW needed to point higher so I added the single Lee Board! It works like a center board so is no bother when down, working on both tacks! It has made CROW a great boat!!! She has turned out as hoped and I love camp cruising with her as she is beyond comfortable! She sails much like a keel boat, very stable and I can sit inside the cabin in bad weather with controls handy! She deserves more attention than she has gotten but give it time! All the bestRoy

For the four plus years, i have had a calling to the sea, with a yearning to build something. I was always attracted to Catamarans and the last three months went all in an James Warham style polynesians inspired catamarans. I must have exhausted everything youtube threw at me including recently, Proas and the entire history of micronrsia, polynesia and the general pacific region sailing history and then came your video.
I am encouraged by your positive approach to get off my butt and do something.

A nice boat is a plus but if too much time passes deciding what the perfect boat will be, valuable time on the water is lost! What's an approximate cost for building the Crow?
IT cost me only $1000 but I used "freecycled" materials and Spruce 3/8"ExteriorPly used for roofing. I did not skimp on Epoxy though and polyester is not for ply boat building! The ply sealed and glassed is encapsuled, so will last years! I also sailed my own sails Rocky, from free sails I collected. All this cut my costs. So is the size of your shop the reason for the size of both boats? You mentioned that crow was bulletproof. I'm sure it was just a figure of speech when you said that because in reality fiberglass isn't really bulletproof by any means on the other hand if you had used kevlar cloth crow's hull would have literally been bulletproof. and those spatchlers your notching you can buy masons trowels with the ntches already pre cut that work great for fiberglass work.
Yes "bullet proof" is an expression Andy, but the latest video shows me sailing onto a rocky island. I mean grinding to a halt on the limestone shore! Not many boats will do that happily! I learned from young that "right sizing" is important! The size of my boat fit our needs and frankly do more for us that bigger boats would! There is truth that the use one gets is proportional to the boat's size! My boats have dual function spaces that make them feel bigger than the 15' 8" of CROW's length! BestRoy

You don't think you are ruining the I integrity of the fiberglass by using a metal trowel?
Its a matter of technique but if you were to dig in an edge, then it is possible to rip the glass but I had no issues. BestRoy
Awesome boat ,what would you think about extending the bow to a point? It would give extra room or buoyancy and piece through the water??
Are you missing the "point" Matt? Lol! Keep in mind the bows bottom rises above the waterline intentionally so adding a point is another design as the hull would need to be different. Also that when tacking the angle is 45 degrees so the corner is breaking the waves. Buoyance is excellent. When running down wind in a swell CROW never roots into a swell wanting to broach she just rises and the wider bow has good volume. Also if motoring into waves she does not hit two sets at once with her short stance but rises to each rinding much like a duck. If breaking the very top of the wave may spray over the deck but the cabin gives good shelter to the cockpit and frankly I'm insid and dry if it is a problem. My wife met Karen, Matt's wife at about show and I had the pleasure of getting to meet Matt. I know his designs well and like the chine runners he uses. My shallow bilge keels have angle iron to add a similar affect. I can't comment about enlarging his design but will say that as with my boat having a point added, you are likely best to keep looking for a proven design that suits your needs. I will say for both Matt's and my design, the sailing from in the cabin is a great asset and makes sailing in any bad weather a breeze! BestRoy

It in fact does have a single lee board for better deep water pointing but the bilge keels do take her to wind by themselves just not pointing as high.

@@joeyadams8939 I really like how she turned out! Minimum size but with all the features we nee but might be tempted to add one foot for a bit more space on the back deck and the kitchen/head. That said the extra foot might take us over the weight limit of our six cyl van tow capacity and we'd be into large expense in needing a bigger tow vehicle. Also I might have a harder time maneuvering in all the tight places we explore! So overall, it has been "right sized" for our needs. Many have lengthened their builds and that working for them and is easily done with the plans given. BestRoy

Crow is comfortable, safe and fast for a cruising sailboat that carries a comfortable home where ever you go! And she can go most anywhere! It only cost me about $1000 CAD but I "Free Cycled old deck material and boat hardware for my build. I'd estimate the cost at about $3500 if buying new materials and depending if you are able to find a decent set of used Albacore 15 sails, which there are many Albacores out there so should not be hard to do! I also offer hints with the plans on saving on hardware etc. Bottom line is that there are boat/trailer/motor packages for sle cheap as some people just wan tto get rid of an old boat. While building I keep an eye out for a deal that suits my needs and often score loads of equipment and hardware and a good trailer! Often the boat is crap so I scrap it after it has been stripped. Hi Dr Wae, believe it, or not the build cost me only about $1000 CAD! I collected free Deck Lumber and other good wood from an old cottage that was going to be torn down! Hardware came from old sailboats that I stripped. I even got lucky and bonused sails from a boat that was left in a field for many years and had rotted! The sails were stored in a barn, in a good bag (no mice)!!! I had to resew them to suit my design but I think they turned out not bad. If building over a couple of years, you have time to collect things. Where I did spend money was on Epoxy and Fiberglass. I did not use cheaper Polyester Resin! Even the paint is mixed reminants from old cans!!! Hope this helps! AllthebestRoy

What is the boat payload?
1500 lbs. CROW, handles weight well as the arched bottom with generous rocker likes it to set her down on her lines. As a camp cruiser, she has generous storage under the bed and couches that secure supplies and gear. how much did it cost
It cost me about $1,000 CAD and that was mostly for ply and epoxy. I had little spare cash so uses exterior roofing ply at about $20 a sheet and lumber from an old deck I had dismantled that was free but for my labor. I Epoxied and glassed everything, which was the bulk of the cost. Much of the hardware I had collected from old boats and I sewed my own sails! I designed CROW to use a set of Albacore 15 sails that are readily available and that would just leave the mizzen to source, which I give instructions how to make one from old sail cloth!

You often speak of "PL" glue. I'm unfamiliar with that term.
PL Premium Exterior Construction Adhesive is an expanding polyurethane adhesive that is good above the waterline! I did use it below as well but was sure to seal all in epoxy and glass to encapsulate the wood! Kept dry, it should last! That said I recommend epoxy as glue and sealer but built CROW with limited funds so tried this method as I also am capable of making my own repairs! Best/Roy

More than fair Mike but so you know we had record high water and the "launch" was back where the truck backed up too. I was actually on the drive part of the ramp! Normally with a normal slope the back tires are just in the water! But it does look bad, I agree! The boat has turned out very cool though. I can sail CROW from in the cabin, have camped aboard and been very comfortable inside the insulated cabin! She noses right up to the beach in most places so I just step on shore! Sails well for a big bottom girl! All the best Roy!
