- My cover of Mary Hopkin’s ‘Those were the Days’. I missed last week’s #fridaycoverong so I am posting it today. This song was recommended to me on Instagram and I hope I have done it justice. I had neither heard of Mary Hopkin (not Hopkins) or this song before being recommended it so thank you!! ‘Those were the Days’ was released by Mary Hopkins in 1968. I originally wrote that the melody was based on a Russian folk song but one of you has kindly corrected me; the melody was written by a Russian composer named Boris Fomin (1900-1948) in1924 with words by the poet Konstantin Podrevsky which was later put to new English lyrics by Gene Raskin who unfortunately is often credited with writing the song. I would like to link the name of the person who gave me this information but I cannot type in Cyrillic, but thank you!! The tune does sound very Eastern European to me. Hopkin's version was produced by none other than Paul McCartney and became a number one hit instantaneously when it was released.
I do not own the rights of this song.

Nice one. Sweet vocal. I'd enjoy listening to you sing Wild Mountain Thyme if you fancy it!
Yes for sure I will!!! Thank you so much for the recommendation 😊 I will try and upload it in a couple of weeks (I have a few other requests to do before but I have written it down) I really appreciate your request so thank you so much 😊😊💕
Since Russian is my second foreign language, and since I am partial to Russian music, I wonder if you would want to try it po Russki. :) I do enjoy your English cover.
Thanks so much!! I could give it a try but I think I would fail miserably haha. I don't speak a single word of Russian 🤣💜
Always loved that song by Mary Hopkins, who btw married Tony Visconti.
Yes it's a great song. And yes I heard that while researching the song. I had never heard of Tony visconti before but I read that he produced for David bowie which is very cool 😎😎❤
Beautiful voice 👍😃 watching from Philippines 🇵🇭
Thank you so much Kato!! I appreciate it
Chords you play sound great, but unfortunately do not always appear in the video. New post or tab post?
In any case, your cover is perfectly linked to true nostalgia, which is the very deep heart of this song, music and lyrics (at least the english ones).
Yeah in some of my videos, I didn't correctly position my guitar to be clearly visible in the video. In terms of tabs, I got it from a great UA-cam channel called frans kuijpers guitar.
And thank you so much, I really do love this song 🥰❤
WoW this song really suits your vocals very well..
Thank you so much ❣
Sorry, it is not the song of Mary Hopkin. Russian composer Boris Fomin wrote this Russian romance in 1924 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boris_Fomin
Yes I know. 😊 I mentioned that it was based on a Russian folk song in the description. Thank you though 😊
I had not heard of boris fomin tho so thanks 😊
@@RosaLavenne OK. Many people think that it was folk song. But this song has a specific author. It was composed by Boris Fomin (1900-1948) with words by the poet Konstantin Podrevsky. Gene Raskin just put a new English lyric to this romance later. However on most recordings of the song, Raskin is credited as the sole writer, even though he wrote only the later English lyric and not the music. Unfortunatelly this is a common case in show business
just put "Boris Fomin" in UA-cam
Another his famous romance ua-cam.com/video/KiasJ4N6jSc/v-deo.html
i took a second look at you .... its amazing you even bother with this song at your age
still calm down though. It's almost sad if you think about it, nostalgic if not actually sad
really,
elle, love, ,,,,,,,
Thank you so much!!
Thank you!!:)
i can hear what you're trying to do. i would say calm down. think of the song as a meditation and take it easy. the intensity of the original is tricky, its not really supposed to be intense.
Thank you for the feedback. Yeah I do tend to rush through these recordings. 🥰
Nice but slow down a touch.
Thank you! Yes people commonly say that. I think when I'm in front of the camera, I panic and speed up haha but I will try to slow down in the future 🧡🧡
