  • "I'm that lucky guy who found his hobby and was able to turn it into a job."
William Dalrymple is a multi-award winning and bestselling historian. Growing up on the Dalrymple family estate in North Berwick, with an almost Edwardian childhood, William was sent off to Ampleforth College at just eight years old. It was there that his passion for history grew and he spent his free time on archaeological digs and getting lost in history books.
William has gone on to turn that childhood fascination into an incredible career. He has written numerous bestselling books including White Mughals and The Last Mughals. His latest book The Golden Road is out now..

The Ancient Greeks and Persians tried to invade India many times and failed. The great Religious epics Mahabharatha and Ramyana were probably source material for much of greek theatre, and everybody should know that from India the symbol 0 appeared and changed the course of maths and Astronomy for ever. Its even said that some of stories in the great religious epics formed the source of the Old Testament.

Sure.😂 What's the proof there was ancient anything in India. Ancient Greece and Egyptian and persian proofs stand tall. No building, be it an old temple, in india predates ancient European civilization, not even close. And the British established the archeological survey and the scientific technologies to excavation and methodology. If not for them we wouldn't have known ANYTHING as we were not the curious types. We were more mujra dekhke mote hone wale types. All the tallest Himalayan peaks were discovered and climed on by Englishmen. @Amory98 Indians have many things for which they can be proud of. And there are ample evidence of them. In mathematics Aryabhatta, Bhaskara, Lilavati, Madhava just to name a few. Ancient India excelled in astronomy, metallurgy, medicine, literature and linguistics, spirituality, philosophy, political and social science, etc. Whoever discovered them, they are true facts.

    2. Buddhist and Hindu texts were translated into Greek.

    - Evidence: Fragments of Buddhist texts in Greek, such as "The Greek Buddhist Sutras" (circa 2nd century CE).

We DID learn about Empress Matilda's escape from prison... which couldn't be more irrelevant, and the "other" Anarchy, the feud between her and King Stephen..... I read Dalrymple's books to help fill in the huge gaps in my understanding of the country where I was actually born. This is embarrassing asf. India's gdp share to world was 46% of world's gdp. Entire Europe combined together in comparison didn't even make up for 13%. (Rest was mostly carried by China)
Greeks isn't even ancient civilization. India and Egypt comparison is much more logical as they were first advanced settlements in human history. Indus valley or Saraswati valley civilization is at least as old as 6000 bce while Egyptian civilization is as old as 3500 bce. Greek isn't even in conversation.

I am from India and my ancestry goes back for several thousand years, so does that of millions of Hindus, Jains and Buddhists. We don’t need any silly comparisons to Greece. Please you so called scholars desist this stale, weak comparison. When Greece “discovered” India in 300 BCE, India was already 2,000 years older than Greece. Alexander learned from Hindu ascetics and philosophers. India has nothing to learn from contemporary Greece. In the same way, it is ludicrous of the British to say such things as “ Chanakya was the “Indian Machiavelli”. What nonsense. Chanakya was several millennia earlier than
Machiavelli. Chanakya was so clever he engineered the defeat and expulsion of Seleucus Nicator from India, ending Greek colonization. Read history without the distorted view of Eurocentrism.

That was the way to introduce great literature to people who would not understand the original literature.

A descendent of James Prinsep, Dalrymple might consider taking up the historic role of being the Joseph Needham for India. Along the same lines, an entire new chapter, if not a follow-up book, could come simply from tracing the fascinating trajectory of the numerous translations and global spread of the famous Panchatantra texts and ideas from ancient India (Vishnu Sharma, ~200 BC) to all over the ancient and medieval world (e.g., Aesop's Fables).
