- Lourdes Grobet is a Mexico City based photographer known best for her work with Lucha Libre wrestlers including El Santo and Blue Demon. Starting her career in photography as a conceptual artist in the late 1960s, she eventually became the first prominent female photographer in Lucha Libre for most of her career. Grobet works in large series projects which also include a 35 year project with the Teatro Campesino e Indígena, a contemporary theater group that interprets the indigenous traditions of pre-hispanic Mexico.
The Artist Series is made possible by the audience that supports the show. Thank you!!! Photography is a better world with you.

My name is Ted Forbes and I make videos about photography. I’ve been making photographs most of my life and I have a tremendously deep passion for photography that I want to share with you on UA-cam.
The Art of Photography is my channel and I produce photography videos to provide a 360 degree look into the world of making images. We all want to get better so lets do this together!
I make videos covering famous photographers, photography techniques, composition, the history of photography, philosophy and much more.
I also have a strong community of photographers who watch the show and we frequently do social media challenges for photographers to submit their own work. I feature the best and most interesting on the show when we do these so come check it out and get involved!
Best photography series by a youtube creator, period.
I grew up in Mexico watching Lucha Libre. My mom would buy me magazines and I was always fascinated by the photos. It is awesome to finally meet one of those photographers. Thanks for making this.
Something about her countenance stuck with me, so genuine and approachable, I'd say even humble and whimsical. Sometimes these qualities are not present in more braggadocious artists. You captured that essence beautifully, and you brought a lesser-known female photographer to the forefront. That's a good day's work.
Thanks Doug - and thanks for all your help on the shoot!
Absolutely stunning. Thank you Mr. Forbes and a great thank you to Senorita Grobet!
R.I.P to the Queen of Lucha Libre photography. Thank you for documenting her legacy in the canon of photography.
Amazing, thank you so much for this, I am mexican and I hate when we dont apreciate our artists an I get to watch these awesome interviews on channels from other countries
That last picture with Señorita Grobet was so heart warming!
Great work señor Forbes.
From what I'm gathering from this series is that the artist's work is a true reflection of how and what they are in real life.
Liked even Before watching!!
I think the Artist Series is one of the most interesting topics I have seen on UA-cam. Lovely.
I literally refreshed UA-cam for the past 4hrs waiting for this video to appear.
Thanks for all the love you're giving Mexican photographers Ted!
Absolutely! Sorry it was later today…
The Art of Photography haha take it as a compliment! I was so eager to see it that I kept a tab on you(tube).
I have Learned & discovered so much through these episodes on Mexican Photography .......Like another World of Expresion .......... I Look forward to your next Artist series on Living Photographers.... & so well made. Thank you.
Thanks I love Lucha Libre Blue Demon & Santo The best!!!!
I really enjoy the artist series, especially Mexican photographers. Greetings from Mexico
What a beautiful woman - her integrity, love of her environment, compassion for others, love of and for her environment just shine through. It struck me how her work was not "about Lourdes Grobet". A rare and special talent.
Ted, you have felt this and more as you put this film together... Have to add the music is just spot on!! Loved it!
Big thank you too, for putting this series together - the interviews just seem to flow effortlessly. I know that is no easy task for any producer. Thank you for sharing these treasures in such a selfless way.
One of your best. A million thanks for all the effort you put into these, Ted! What a warm and engaging woman she is. I love her expressive hands.
"Photography is my language. It's how I express myself." Perfect. Thanks so much, Ted, for interviewing this wonderful person. What an inspiration!
Ted this is great. You not only show great cultural content, you empower woman and at the same time you teach art has no nationality. I truly admire your work and effort. Again this should be on cable tv.
I have to admit that I have never heard of Lourdes Grobet or of Lucha Libre and that I don't have any interest in wrestling at all. Yet, I enjoyed this video much more than I thought I would. This is another great homage to an interesting photographer. I absolutely agree with Doug that you captured her authenticity and her love for what she is doing. This is not the first and most probably not the last of your videos to really broaden my horizon. I am looking forward to seeing your next production!
Me too. I never heard of Lourdes Grobet nor of wrestling with the masks in Mexico. This photographer has such a heart and deep connection to the wrestlers - showing that they have family and care about their children. At first, I didn't think I would like this but just like Harald, I enjoyed this video much more than I thought I would and I learned to appreciate this culture of wrestling. Also, I really liked the music. Ted, I am looking forward to the next Photographer Artist in the Series.
Harald Selke Well said !!
I have greatly respected your knowledge and insight throughout previous AOP videos. But your broadening of horizons, stepping out to let us all view photography and photographers in a different cultural perspective.. that deserves a bow. As a latin american I thank you for your gazing out towards the south.
Thanks so much for this wonderful interview!!!
Documenting the un/lesser known people and artists. I love to pry open the door and look inside...as you have done. Excellent work. B.
What a beautiful soul. She's got infectious energy. You're on a roll Mr. Forbes. I always enjoyed your Photo Lit videos because they introduced me to artists I knew nothing about, and deepened my understanding and appreciation for photography as an artistic medium. Artist Series just takes that to the next ten levels and I'm thoroughly enjoying getting to hear these artists, really, back up the foundation you've already laid (to your ever growing audience) sharing the same passion and love for photography. Be proud man, this is gold!
What an amazing woman! And such interesting images. I love the way Ted lets the artist speak. No silly, probing questions - just the real McCoy.
Thanks for showing interest in mexican photographers, grat job Mr. Forbes!
Enjoyed immensely for giving an insight into a little-known way of life and a great interview with a very remarkable Lady - thanks very much.
Excellent interview and production, thanks very much.
Excellent Ted! You have really taken The Art of Photography ten notches above the previous level with The Artist Series. I mean all of them have beenntop notch! I'm 54 now, and I grew up in Puerto Rico watching El Santo and Blue Devil movies on tv in theclate 70's. Ted - the whole production even the siren that went of in the background, and her face / expression... lol. The choice of the surf music in the background, also reminded me of the movie Pulp Fiction. Good choice my friend! Saludos and congratulations.
"......I don't take pictures; I create my photographs......" sums up her philosophy. A truly amazing photographer ! Thanks for the video, Ted !
Thank you for sharing these artist videos!!
Que lindo estuvo este episodio. Me encanta tu show
Very informative and entertaining!! Thank you for the Artist Series!
Amazing video. Her work its quite inspirational. Throughly enjoyed it!
superb video, love it :) the bit with the police cars interrupting did make me laugh, great work.. had to share it.
A very insightful and personal video of a superb photographer. Well done, again !
Excelent video, I'm from Mexico and I really appreciate it. Not only for this video, but for the effort you put in your videos.
a fantastic short of a truly great photographer, I really enjoyed that, thank you
My favorite photos were of the mama wrestlers feeding their babies ❤ awesome interview!
by god, that's amazing. wonderful person, great photographies.
Wow!, what a find!! Both Ms Grobets study and your programs. By serendipity, one of your you tube videos came up on another photo vid. I had learned a lot from several historical photography texts (Neuhall, etc.), but I see there is a lot of gaps that need filling in. Thanks so very much for you efforts and sharing your knowledge and insight. Best regards, Dr D.
What an incredible job you did. I really thank you for keeping all of us inspired. May God bless you always ..
Love this. Rest in peace Lourdes.
I just want to say thank you. I'm mexican and it makes me extremely proud that this amazing mexican photographers are having their voices heard and their visions understood. I'm always very happy when people can see the amazing stories of mexican culture because people are so blinded by all the stereotypes. Thanks Ted :)
I grew with El Santo and Blue Demon. Watched the movies and at the time enjoyed the magic of the Luchadores culture. This brought back so many memories that I thought I had forgotten. Again, an absolutely wonderful snapshot of one of the great photographers of our era. Excellent job Ted! Looking forward to the next installment.

Fantastic work, I really enjoyed learning of her experience as a photographer.
Thank you Ted. There are not many videos of her discussing her Lucha Libre or Teatro Campisino work. Great video and love the Pulpfiction like feel with the music.
I am new to photography(I also live in Dallas metroplex) and just watching all these famous photographers is tremendous! Honestly I don't think I would have ever came across these awesome photographers much less watch a video about them but this series is just so eye opening and well put together that it calls to be watched.
Thank you for your dedication and time towards this series. Truly thankful.
I hope/want you to go to all different countries interviewing their top photographers. #season3needstohappen
Thanks neighbor!
Great interview and review of Grobet's work. Well done.
Well done again Ted, so much more interesting than the run of the mill photography channels that seem to be more about the presenters and gear rather than the 'art of photography'. 👍
Thanks for sharing, Ted! Wonderful portrait.
Loved this so very much! I appreciated her humility and her desire to learn through photography!
I really love the passion that comes through in her descriptions. The fact that she wanted to keep two of the wrestlers identities secret, even from herself, is just fascinating. You can tell that she was caught up with mystery that came with the masks. In so many instances, you get to see something you would've have otherwise about the wrestlers lives, capturing them in real life scenarios, yet still with the masks on; there's a juxtaposition to this that works well. Great video, Ted. Keep it up!
Enjoyed immensely - thanks much.
Thanks Joe!
Thanks so much for posting this.
Fabulous! What a wonderful woman.
Great video really enjoyed it, awesome series Mr Forbes
Top notch as always! Really awesome video.
The artist series as well as your other videos are always refreshing for my passion of photography. Thanks for doing this!
That picture in the background
Hi Ted, Happy to see this video, I know her work from years back. I'm good friend with her son.
That's cool Sidarta! Is she still working on the Bering Strait project with him? I really love Lourdes - she's amazing…
Hi Ted I just came back from Ireland and I haven't see him in a while but I will ask him when I'll see him.
Besides the photographic context, great choice of music!
One of my favorite videos of yours thus far, Ted. Exquisite work as me, the viewer, was taken back to a particular period in history. Superb
This was fantastic -- thanks so much!
Muchas gracias por este gran video, Ted. Saludos desde México.
So unique, my fav one so far Ted, loved it!
Excellent. I think It's rather difficult to find UA-cam channels that are as passionate on cameras tech as on the more authorial approach to photography. Great job and also to Niccolls and Jordan from dpreview. I reach to your channel through theirs.
Wow, another great one! Thanks Ted.
Yet again, fantastic work. The music in this video was just amazing too. Thank you Ted for dragging me out of what I am now realizing to be a very narrow and slightly ignorant view of the wide world of photography. Bless you.
I grew up in Mexico being a big fan of Lucha Libre, now i'm a big fan of photography and an amateur photographer and my aunt is La Diablolica, the lady wrestler mencioned in the minute 8:40 , so i enjoyed so much this episode! :)
Im gonna traslate this episode to the spanish in order to show it to my mom because La Diabolica is her sister. If you want the traslation in order to put subtitles in this video i could send it to you.
Toma uno, dos, tres, cuatro! ... El Santo! Jim Jarmusch said few times about soundtracks they are key, perceived the importance of music in his films. Nice to see Sixteen Wheelers are here too :) Congrats for the series! Keep on rolling
you know, I remember seeing some of those wrestler photos, now I know who made them. Thanks for this video. It was excellent.
This is beautiful! Thanks for making the artist series and share.
Hi Ted, It took me a while to get around to watch your "artist series". I had high expectations, but you managed to create something that went over anything I imagined. To be honest, most of the featured photographers were unknown to me, and getting to know them and their work in their own words, is really great experience. Great Job!
They just keep getting better and better. They're already great. I mean like really great, and they are growing. I'm calling you out to be on the hook. There needs to be a season three. I will drop what I'm doing to help even. Take my money!
Magical. Thank you. Ric
Fantastic series Ted....really outstanding...thank you for doing this!
Lovely lady.
Interesting subject.
Thank you..x
It's very interesting to listen to her talk about her work on theatre and how she was not a folk photographer and that she was working with actors and not indians. As a mexican I think it's kind of hard in a way to not distance oneself from people from the country as sort of either less advanced or at least completely different and it's honestly incredibly refreshing to see an artist who genuinely sees people as people and sees the worth in their work regardless of who they are instead of a novelty. I feel like we can be very patronizing towards more artisanal work in a way and the fact that she doesn't act like that instantly won her over for me.
you are awesome Ted! Thanks for doing this kind of work!!
Brilliant Ted
But how could she take those photos without 1million ISO, 20 frames per sec, eye detect,
and 5 grands worth of glass ?
This was wonderful, well done!!
Amazing stuff. Such an intimate peek into the world of great photographers. Thank you Ted!
Mr. Forbes, thanks for such a an interview!!! Marvelous!
Great episode in the series! Thanks much. Also wanted to say the interview itself is shot beautifully.
I see an award coming your way for these series! I'm loving every single one of them! Well done! Congrats!
Great as always!
Beautifully done Ted!! :)
Bring this series back Ted! Please!
this is fantastic.great music choice too !: i love your artist series the most, thanks to you i have learned about many great photographers. thanks Ted.
As we say in the U.K. - proper 'andsome! Another amazing and inspirational video Ted, thankyou so much for all you bring to us!
wow, wow, wow... amazing work Ted!!!!
I loved your pose of Luchador (15:23)! Thank you for such amazing work (again!).
This is awesome. Probably my favourite in the series so far. Great work, Ted.
Great work Ted as usual.
As a Child i used to hear about these Enigmatic Mexican Masked Wrestlers and i thought it was the coolest thing to see.
I was not a big wrestling fan nor Mexican but i found it very intriguing never the less.
Just want to compliment you on your series.
Keep up the Great !!
Amazing video, greetings from Cancún :)
The great Lourdes Grobet passed away today, July 15th, 2022. May the arena gods keep her soul.
So sorry to hear this :-(
I really liked this interview, Ted!!! Thanks a lot!! :)
she is interesting. Thanks for making the video.
That was sick, Ted! I love the way to structure these interviews to feel as if you were in the room there with Lourdes having a conversation with her, it's A1. And its so dope to see what would be the equivalent to Marvel movies back then in our culture portrayed incredibly by Lourdes, me and my dad used to buy different masks every time we went on vacation to MX, I mean I have Blue Demon's mask in my room haha! But can't wait till the rest of the series comes out!
Thanks Ted.
another great one...
