My son, a cello player, is telling that this (wonderful) piece is hardly played, because it is too difficult for cellists. Congratulation for the musicians!

Borodin again proved his mastery of adapting a snippet of another composer's work (here Bach) in an unexpected and original way as the basis for an entire movement. In fact, this entire Sonata is infused with the Bach theme. Bach would probably approve. Grudgingly. Bravo, Borodin! And thanks, Michal for posting this new performance for our enjoyment!

I was curious to that theme's origin. It also appears in Lorenzo Perosi's Il Natale del Redetore.

The fugue from one of the unaccompanied violin sonatas, I believe.

Sonata number 1 in g-minor, second movement.
Also, check out Borodin's String Quartet no. 1 in A-major. The first movement is largely developed from a 14-note sample from the first movement of Beethoven's Emperor Concerto, expanded into a delightful melody, and even worked over as the subject for a fugue led by the cello.
The Omega Ensemble has posted a fine performance on UA-cam, and if you are of a more technical bent, there is a performance sync'd to the score.

This Peace is a hoax. Michael Goldstein is notorious for his musical fakes. There is no edition of the piece that reveals what is by Borodin and what is by Goldstein. Until there is, I don't believe in Borodin. But if it is a fake, then it is a very good one. For comparison, you can listen to Goldstein's "Balakirev" (Impromptus for violin and piano) and you can believe that he composed the complete sonata himself.
