The emulator didn't fail, Arin failed it. Not setting the controls right in the emulator and then not reading any game manuals from an era were that was really necessary.

The only fail here is GG themselves for not preparing. The VICE emulator is the best there is and very easy to set-up. If you actually bother.

Arin figures out that you can actually configure buttons on the c64 emulator
Deady Bear which is only useful if you already know what the games key bindings are. You can definitely say up is the up arrow, but if the game didn’t bind the key to up and did it to L, then it still doesn’t matter! 😅 because the C64 was a keyboard. So in order to correctly bind it all, you’d have to know the button set up for each game you’d be playing. Then reconfigure each time you switched games.
The main fact they can type letters correctly means it’s just bound to the normal keyboard set up, and all the trouble is actually how the game set up where all the buttons are: in true c64 style!
I love how 90% of these videos are them trying to fight the emulator.
Edit: I upped the percentage multiple times as this video went on.
Did u mean “this video is” instead of “these videos are?” Because this is the only video of theirs that is like this (as far as I know) and based on your edit you’re only talking about this video as well.

Once all that modern art stuff got hold of Figure Skating the sport really haven't been the same. Nowadays the performers simply stands there, still. It is supposed to be some kind of meta narritive about the sport, like "What makes this a sport? Is standing still dancing?" and "Is a LP video without gameplay still a LP video?"

It’s not the games so much as they’re testing our dedication by not mapping the controls and setting up the emulator, which is very easy to do if they gave a shit.

SuperGaming Dude yeah, no I can be mad at them, their job is to edit the videos and they fucked that up, (not just this time but a multitude of other times). I'm not saying we shouldn't forgive them but that we've given them so many second chances they need to be better about this stuff. I'm sorry but at this point it's kind of unacceptable, and until they're more transparent about this stuff like other people are, that's how I feel (just like a message from the boys themselves at the start would work). I love the boys too but this is just disgraceful in my opinion, just tough love I suppose

It kills me that they still haven't properly configured the emulator, because this was one of my absolute favorite games.
Though even while having a working joystick, the experience of failing to do -anything- in figure skating was quite nostalgic

Not hating but I find it interesting Arin gushes over these older games and run cycles but had nothing good to say about Spider-man
He obviously respects more the efforts of a couple of devs pushing the limits of the era than a cynical AAA company throwing 10 millions at a safe project and another 10 at selling it.
imho AAA games are so stale, and have no personality because their massive inversion requires them to appeal to everyone. Older and indie games are usually much more personal and therefore more artistic despite their limitations and flaws.

They're the ones who are failing. Everything works on a real C64 or properly set up VICE emulator. It seems to be their schtick to fail.

I'm wondering if maybe they've configured the wrong controller. Commodore 64 had this weird quirk, most games, if they used just one joystick, it had to be in port 2. That might explain why the menu worked but the game seemingly didn't.
@@tetsujin_144 That makes a lot of sense. It's been 18 years since I even held a Commodore controller, and I've never even bothered to emulate it

Cause they aren't smart enough or informed enough to realize that you are supposed to configure or bind controllers on an emulator in the first place.

My favorite GameGrumps episode is the one where they enter players for a loooong time.

It may help if they had an actual C64, because the C64 has a special keyboard that is quite different from our typical Qwerty Keyboard.
yes, they seem to be using a keyboard with 3KRO or something.
But they were also using controller so the problem was that they didn't even bother messing with the emulators bindings.
Huh? The C64's keyboard, at least in North America, has the standard QWERTY layout. Some of the non-letter, non-number keys might be in unique positions, but that was normal for a computer back in those days, before everyone settled on a particular layout (and today we've got various layouts once again, for some keys).

Hey, I’ve actually played this game, but on my Apple II+ ages ago. I’m around Dan’s age, (older by a few years, actually D:) and I get all of his references, (also being a musician helps) so I guess it’s not much of a surprise that we’d played some of the same old VGA games.

These games are actually really fun if you know how to play them and have your emulator set up correctly. It would be cool if you guys figured out the tech stuff and controls before recording.

Its not the emulator. Every and i mean EVERY emulator you use you have to setup the key bindings and has not bothered to do that.
i've used a gameboy and 3ds emulator and both of them has preset key bindings

It's almost like I wanted gameplay of any kind. Not knowing what the buttons do is one thing, but not knowing what are buttons is pretty shocking.

@@SuperSaiyanGuyver Well, to be fair, the "bombs bursting in air" were the British bombs pummeling Ft. McHenry through the night, not American bombs. The fact that they kept coming is what "gave proof through the night" that the Americans didn't surrender.
Andrew Fralinger Don't get me wrong, I think both anthems are sweet. More pointing out the difference in tone. "Oh, Canada" is lovingly patriotic, rousing and respectful. "Star Spangled Banner" is a ballsy song that may as well have been a Heavy Metal "Come at me bro!" in the 1810s. Kinda exemplifies both countries in the long run, whatever conclusions can be drawn from that.
TLDR Both songs are kickass for different reasons, and thats okay.
@@SuperSaiyanGuyver Truth. In case you didn't hear it, the Japanese anthem is another of my favorites. It's less than a minute long, based on a 3-4 line poem from centuries ago.
I wasn't alive for this era of gaming... and I appreciate everyone who played this and didn't think this was the pinnacle of gaming. Thank you, visionaries, for pushing the limits of the human spirit so that I could enjoy at least functional games on a semi-regular basis.
