  • In a complete break from reality, Dragon Ball Dissection examines how a narcissistic conman bends the world to his will, while those in the know look the other way for their own personal benefit. It's funny because he hits his head on the ground. Also, Goku returns, cementing Gohan's status as third banana. And Piccolo makes some really questionable decisions.

    As you may or may not know, the powers that be have taken issue with my using Dragon Ball music in the opening. I suppose that's certainly their right. As a result, I have made the difficult choice to replace the opening music in most of The Boo Arc videos with a new, UA-cam-friendly piece. I hope you like it. As a compromise, I have retained the original music in a few select Boo Arc videos scattered across the arc. For those who miss the original, follow this link to the opening as I uploaded it in 2020. Thanks so much for your support!

    I always loved how the punch machine gag encapsulated each character's personality.
    Android 18 doesn't give a shit so of course she won't hold back.
    Krillin's gonna abide by Gohan's wishes but still wants to get a good score for his pride.
    Piccolo detests the very idea of this but he's gonna be a good sport and *try* to cooperate.
    Goku has no problem holding back whatsoever and is so casual and easy-going about it he gets a lower score than even Krillin.
    And Vegeta, being the anti-social downer, just says the hell with the whole thing and destroys it.

    The people of Dragon Ball have developed a case of Sunnydale Syndrome. They just can't believe in anything out of the ordinary even when that used to be the norm for the Earth. They've seen people fly, shoot ki blasts, and destroy entire cities with the lift of a finger, but no one remembers and are so awestruck when they see Goten and Trunks flying. There used to be anthropomorphic animals walking around everywhere, but they suddenly disappeared with the exception of Oolong and The King. No one except for the announcer remembers Piccolo and the fact that he was an evil demon king that destroyed the last tournament grounds, but even the announcer takes it all in stride even though he's a remnant of the Dragon Ball world of old and should express concern for Ma Junior entering this tournament. Also, everyone is so caught up in Mr. Satan's facade that they have forgotten about the legendary martial artist, the Muten Roshi, the inventor of the Kamehameha, a name that was once known far and wide that doesn't even get a passing reference now and no one at the tournament grounds recognizes him. Maybe the Earth the Dragon Team returned to after Namek is an alternative Earth from the one they're from. Maybe it's like the Fake Namek from the anime filler. After comparing the Earth before the Cell Arc to how it is afterwards, it seems that way.

Also, how about Tenshinhan destroying the ring with a Kikoho? What about the Red Ribbon Army? They were a terrorist organization that was feared throughout the world, now they're gone thanks to Goku and no one has ever commented on it. No one remembers Piccolo/Ma Junior destroying Papaya Island, and it seems that also applies to Nappa destroying the East Capitol. That's ridiculous. I think the big difference between the Buu arc and the Saiyan/Freeza/Cell arcs re. Goku is - in those earlier stories, it's taken as a given that Goku will be the hero, or at least pivotal to victory. In the Saiyan arc, everyone's waiting for Goku to arrive; in the Freeza arc, they're waiting for him to arrive, then get better; in the Cell arc, they're waiting for him to get better, then arrive. In the Buu arc, the initial expectation is that Goku will only be around for the tournament. Once the initial confrontation with Babidi and Buu is over, we're left with the Supreme Kai seeing Gohan as the key to victory, and Goku seeing the fusion dance as performed by Goten and Trunks as the key to victory. He becomes a mentor character, and explicitly states that it's time for the younger generation to step up, and repeats the sentiment later when watching Gohan face Buu (in the anime, at least; can't remember about the manga.) Even with SSJ3 revealed, he's not built up as someone who's going to be there for the final battle; Gohan, Goten, and Trunks are.
    As you say, whenever Toriyama decided to make that change, it got made. But the fact that, for so much of this arc, Gohan and the kids are presented as the ones who will be the heroes, who will make the difference, makes it all the more jarring when that doesn't happen, and if Toriyama did decide as early as the tournament that Gohan's days as the series lead were done, he erred greatly in waiting so long before actually presenting Goku as the pivotal character in the conflict.

  • @ME-oj9bw

    Gohan was still the main character here with all the major plot focusing on him.
    He was the one who got to fight Dabura while Goku/Vegeta fought fodder characters, he was the one getting upset over Spopovich vs Videl, he was the one who gave up his energy sparking the start of the entire story, and he was the one who had a personal arc of having to regain his strength he lost as a result of peace time.
    I know you were joking when you stated how Gohan being taken out of the story means he’s the MC (because that’s what happened with Goku) but in a way it does. They took Gohan temporarily out of the story in order to build him up in the background to ultimately measure up to Buu after being overwhelmed by him the first time. Although it’s impossible to say for sure, since Toriyama never stated when exactly fans/executives made him change his mind on Gohan, but I believe he was the MC up until the point Goku gets revived by Elder Kai. Since prior to that Gohan and Goku say their final goodbyes which to a fan seems like the real end and the last time we’ll see Goku, as he has successfully passed the torch to his son once more. Hell, Gohan even ends up sporting Goku’s signature gi if you need anything else suggesting this literal passing of the torch in the Buu Arc. Unless Toriyama was attempting to make a sick joke here by having Gohan formally wear Goku’s gi before his fight with Buu and saying his final goodbye to Goku, only to be thrown aside for Goku, I believe Gohan was still the planned MC here.
    I mean you can’t really say Goku is the MC when Goku himself is constantly building up and talking about the next generation. To me, it seems like Goku in the Majin Buu is taking up the role of a teacher / old wise master and is enacting final lessons onto his pupils / successors; which is essentially him formally passing the torch to them and mainly Gohan.
    This is mainly why the Majin Buu Arc is a narrative mess, it spends the entire story focusing on the next generation only to double down on that and go back to Goku as the MC by having him save the day; while also asspulling things last minute out of nowhere like Elder Kai giving his life for Goku (even though Kami states Gods can’t kill themselves) and Potara. It would be like if in the Frieza Arc we had it so Goku spent days traveling to Namek training only to do nothing while Krillin is the one who saves the day. It’d be stupid, came out of nowhere, and would have been a slap in the face to everything the story has been building up to.

      DB would have been in such a better place today if Goku had stayed dead, it would give the show a reason to grow and change as it did before, time and time again, the last time being in the beginning of the Saiyajin saga.
      Even if the equivalent of DBS or DBGT couldn't work Gohan into the type MC his father was, it could still have Pan, Videl, Goten, Trunks, Kuririn, 18, Vegeta and Piccolo there to help carry the load.
      I'm certain DB would still be evolving to this day, instead of the DBGT we got that is a bad mixture of early DB and Majin Buu saga with some development to the characters or the awful DBS that is just trying to rehash everything from DBZ by regressing characters' development and being afraid to evolve.
      Just remember that Kid Trunks is the same age as Teen Trunks when Future Gohan dies and 4 years older than Gohan in the fight against Cell.

      People tend to take his statements as him just being polite, but you really think Toriyama, the guy who admitted to doing some things *solely* because the audience wouldn't expect it, and who literally threatened to quit and stop making the manga when executives were shuffling their feet about him making Goku an adult... you think that this man was "forced" to make this change because of "fans/executives"?

      @Oberstein Knows Best
      Not really, it reminds me a lot of Goku in the King Piccolo Arc with him locking his potential through drinking the Ultra Divine Water. Even though a potential unlock isn’t the most exciting game winning power-up/trump card it actually fits really well with Gohan’s story as a whole. He’s always been this character with immense latent potential lurking within him, and then in the Majin Buu Arc he finally has it all brought out, reaching the fullest of his power/potential. Although I’ll agree it’s kinda lame and feels like just a way to make Gohan stronger than Buu, but it’s not like Gohan didn’t earn it. He spent his time doing Z-Sword training which made him significantly stronger and then did Elder Kai’s ritual which he had to sit down for, in a way, mirroring the lesson Goku was taught by Korrin before he got the water that unlocked his potential with Gohan having to express virtues fundamental to Elder Kai’s ritual.
      Although I agree how it could be a little lame if the story ended with Gohan defeating Super Buu right there and then. He definitely should have struggled and overcame Buu instead of curbstomping him, which is why I believe the idea of Buutenks was a good addition (although any other power up to make Super Buu stronger would serve the same purpose) and the story would have been much better if Gohan overcame Buutenks ( / the idea of Super Buu becoming stronger) by surpassing his limits and a well fought battle, or by even teaming up with others in order to do so.
      I’m going to have to disagree with Vegeta’s sacrifice being a better ending though. Although being a fantastic moment in the Buu Arc, and a phenomenal accumulation of Vegeta’s character in the story especially in the Buu Arc... it’s just that, a great moment for Vegeta as a character. But not for what should be the ending of the story arc.

      @Maxi Iroh
      I one-hundred percent agree. Goku as a character definitely isn’t bad by any means, and you surely can still write stories around him, but from a narrative perspective he’s peaked. Goku’s entire story revolved around winning the WMAT and then fighting strong people. Besides that desire to fight strong people he doesn’t have much going for him and doesn’t really grow much, and this is because Goku as a character *can’t* really grow much outside of becoming stronger. He’s a veteran and has pretty much done it all, especially everything major around his character as a whole like winning the WMAT. It’d be like if Boruto continued with Naruto as the main character, you can’t really write a new story around a character who has already done it all and reached their goals.
      The story would no doubt be MUCH better with the next generation Gohan/Goten/Trunks/Even Uub as the main characters and the ones getting all the focus, since they actually have room to grow.
      I’m pretty sure Shueisha/Toriyama/Whoever was too afraid of the risks in going this route just because of Goku’s popularity and how iconic he is, which is pretty sad to see. I really hate seeing a dead horse be beaten when the story could become so much more if they’d just stop beating it and try something new.

    The video's a treat as always, though I do want to share my own two cents on the whole Piccolo thing:
    I think as viewers outside the Dragon Ball universe who are shown only the perspective of the Dragon Team, we fail to sometimes realize how _incredibly_ niche and obscure the Tenkaichi Budokai was before Mr. Satan. Sure, it was something that a lot of people heard of as the Ultimate Martial Arts Tournament under the Heavens, but there's a big difference between hearing about it and actually knowing the details. I obviously know of football/soccer but I'm not a sports guy, I know the names of Cristiano Ronaldo and the like, but I have never actually been to an actual stadium, and I'm sure out of the 7 Billion people on the planet, I'm in the majority there. It's safe to assume that even if the event was televised, not many people actually tuned in to see Goku and Piccolo Junior's fight, and since it had no long term repercussions, very few people actually remembered what happened on that day. With stuff like the Saiyans landing and (iirc) destroying East City just a few years later, and the threat of the Red Ribbon Army before that, in comparison the 23rd Budokai was barely a footnote in the world's history.
    We have so many fake martial artists even in real life, that it's not hard to believe that the majority of the ignorant public might buy into Mr. Satan's idea of the big explosions being nothing but smokes and mirrors. Piccolo Junior never actually did any large scale damage like Piccolo Daimao did, so it could be that they just thought he was some dangerous wannabe.
    Junior made a big shockwave and blew up the ring and flatenned the Island, but I don't recall there being any actual casualties.
    Daimao on the other hand, straight up blew an entire city and made it to the news. So makes sense that if 50/100 people knew of or remembered Daimao, only a fraction of that, say, 5/100 people would actually remember the name Ma Junior. And even then, "maybe _this_ Ma Junior is just a wannabe of that other Ma Junior", you get what I'm saying?
    Compare that to Cell, who not only SUCCed thousands of people, including entire towns, but also took out the nations army in one fell swoop in the Anime. Even Imperfect Cell's threat loomed for days, much longer than either of the Piccolo events, not even mentioning the 10 days of sheer panic that followed the declaration of the Cell Games. Compared to Daimao, who declares May 9th as Piccolo Day and ends up dying the same day, it makes sense that Cell's defeat would actually make it to the history books rather than Piccolo's or Ma Junior's.
    *Tl;dr* - Very few people remember Piccolo Daimao, even fewer remember Ma Junior, and Piccolo just doesn't give a crap.

      I think some people take it for granted that the Tenkaichi Budoukai was some kind of obscure, niche event. Presumably such an idea was started to help gloss over some of this. It's certainly possible that such an idea was intended. And it's *definitely* treated as more mainstream and popular in this iteration than it was previously. But I don't see any evidence in earlier parts of the series that the event was "underground" or "cult" as some people like to claim.
      However, like you, I don't follow sports. But even so, if self-proclaimed members of ISIS showed up at the national cornhole championships, probably the most obscure televised sport I've ever had the random chance of encountering, and completely blew up the stadium and surrounding areas, even if there were somehow no casualties, you really think every single person in the world wouldn't hear about it? That it wouldn't dominate the news cycle for weeks? That people wouldn't be talking about it for decades to come?

      No, sorry, it still doesn't make sense. No matter how supposedly "niece" and unpopular the Tenkaichi Budoukai supposedly was, the guy who literally took over the world only three years ago showing up and nuking the entire tournament would've made national news. Think about it, the schools where school shootings happen don't tend to be super famous schools, but you still hear about them. Hell, apply that to what's going on right now. Is Minneapolis the most famous city ever? No. But you still hear about it when a guy gets murdered by a cop and there's riots. Hell, practically NO ONE had heard of George Floyd or Derek Chauvin before the incident, but when Floyd gets killed, it makes national news.

He is the legitimate World Champion, after all. Deep down though, he knows he can't beat any extraordinary fighter on his level or above so he "cheats" or "fixes" tournaments in his favor to keep himself on top. He even has a posse of flunkies to help keep the title revolving around himself.

He doesnt know the super saiyan transformation or its name but he does know that goku fought cell and cell even stated gokus name infront of the cameras. Most of the other people wouldnt know who he is but the turtle gi is something the announcer knows verbatim. Krillin yamucha and tein also being there despite both being at odds with him. Then seeing the child who looks similar to goku wearing piccolo gi would definitely give him clues. Im sure ztv sold whatever they had of the fight. It wouldnt be hard to get that video. Now one viewing thats not something to note and speculative. But looking at it enough in 7 years he could very well take that info and come to that conclusion. Plus piccolo named in ma junior as to not freak people out. And piccolo came in with goku. Enough context clues to know that hes shouldnt be surprised at piccolo.

    Well, the arena still pays homage to the old style in the background. The building the finalists stay in while they're waiting for their turn to fight is clearly modeled after the old arena.
    Besides, after what Piccolo did in the 23rd Tournament, they obviously would HAD to have rebuilt the stadium from the ground up. The old stadium was modeled in the "old world" style because it was probably more than a hundred years old, seeing as the first tournament we see was the 21st Tournament, and the tournament prior to the events of the series took place once every five years.

      Goku fusing into shenron has nothing to do with that...it's just a thing that happens.

    That seems awfully similar to what Master Roshi feared would happen to Goku and Krillin if either of them were allowed to win the 21st Tournament, doesn't it?

    I think theyre trying to make Goku more the new Piccolo during the sections Gohan's unconscious. During Frieza and Cell, whenever Goku was out of action (which was often), Piccolo would step up and lead the action during the "holding pattern" phase of each of those wars. Goku here, is actually supposed to be "holding the line" until the "real hero" Gohan or briefly later, Gotenks, can spring into the action and saving the day, supposedly being the stronger power. This pattern of course doesn't work for Toriyama in the end, but it means we actually get a lot more Goku time in the Buu Saga than we would have had he been the intended hero, as he'd have been off training, or still dead, or fighting Dabura or something, and the others would have been leading the action until he arrived.

    The name Piccolo was televised worldwide. The name Ma Junior was kept confined to a tournament that is not (as far as I know) broadcast and that only a small amount of people got to watch, decades ago.

    • @MistareFusion
      @MistareFusion  4 роки тому +18

      What Daniel said. Also, it is broadcast. We see the group listening to a live radio broadcast of the 22nd Budoukai.
      Also, I talk specifically about Budoukai staff. As I show, this is a tournament where both identity and facial records of all competitors are archived, and the fact that that is true is a major plot point. Bonus points: it's a major plot point revolving around Piccolo. At best, you could say that those records were lost. But even so, the announcer introduces him in this tournament by tying him to that previous match. There is nothing incognito about this. People both know and don't know at the same time. It really doesn't make any sense.
