I actually live in Portugal now. I've been here for almost 3 years and my time here has been amazing. The Iberian culture of Portuguese people is very colorful but relaxed at the same time. They love their food(probably my best best sea food experience), football and just blase vibe & atmosphere in general. Portugese folks are one of the most chilliest people to hang out with and oh boy.. they'll make you laugh, drink & sing. Beaches are outstanding, historical sites are all over the country and speaking somewhat as a regular tourist myself, you'll just generally have an awesome time visiting. Highly recommended if you ever decide to visit 👍

Europe operates more on ethnicity rather than race (not all the time but generally) so when they say 90-95% Portuguese they are referring to ethnicity not identity.
People of other ethnic groups can be Portuguese as in born and raised, migrated/citizenship. But his visual examples were of what an ethnic Portuguese person might look like.
Much like in China there are large immigrant groups of all races, but if you were going to show the range of Chinese people, you would show people who would people who are Han, hui, etc.
I’ve spent time in Portugal it’s a wonderful place and super welcoming. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it

Am Angolan and Portuguese, I lived in Vila Nova de Gaia/Porto. The food is indeed 👌🏾. Bacalhau is indeed our national dish and there are 1000s of recipes for it. But the easiest is to just boil it and accompany with boiled veg (greens, cabbage, carrots), some boiled eggs, good olive oil and vinegar.

about the portuguese and the explanation about the attempts of other countries to invade: "“There is, in the westernmost part of Iberia, a very odd people: they refuse to govern themselves and they refuse to be governed!” The quote is sometimes attributed to “a Roman general” from the 3rd century B.C., sometimes to Julius Caesar."

The thing with the friendzone is: we, as portuguese, really try to be in good terms with everybody, as we for the most part do are close friends with almost every nation on the world. The thing is. Every country in the world know 2 things about us. When we are friends, we really are friends, but if you act as our enemy... You never want to go to war with Portugal, some tried, and the result was always the same, you don't just lose, you are humiliated. We never lost a war in our history. Never. We quit one, but never lost a war in our history. We never had many wars, because every nation know this, you lose in a war with us. It doesn't matter the size of your army, we just don't lose.
Our army is so well trained, and as been for so many centuries, that at the time they gave us another word for soldiers: comandos. Even today, all over the world, elite soldiers are trained to be close to what a portuguese soldier is. A elite soldier.
And elite soldiers in Portugal are trained to, if needed, they can beat armies alone. Some have done it. The trainning of our army is just pure insanity, no one can beat them.

Portugal went out and settled to where there was no land owner, only tribals to which made alliances to protect them from their enemies, there was no kingdom nor a nation where Portugal settled, so at that time who discovered the land could claim it, the only exceptions was macau and goa which were given to Portugal by china and the sultanate in india.

There were big waves of imigration a few decades ago into Portugal from some African colonies (in the 60s or so), which means there's multiple generations (mine and younger, I'm in my 30s) that were born here and are black people. I guess that's what the narrator meant when he said "90% of the population identifies as portuguese". he should've been more accurate in the photos he shared, though, I guess, because that includes all colors of people who have come here as children / were born here.

The Anglo-Portuguese Treaty was signed on 16 June 1373, it established a treaty of "perpetual friendships, unions [and] alliances" between the two seafaring states. The 650th anniversary of the treaty was officially commemorated by the governments of both nations on 16 June 2023, and in acknowledgement that this represents "the world's longest diplomatic alliance". It was reinforced throughout history, including in 1386, 1643, 1654, 1660, 1661, 1703, 1815 and 20 century, what can create some confusion about how old it is. 😊 Just another input: the Portuguese don't love the French 😂 but the Spanish are "nuestros hermanos".

28:00 as Americans it's much easier to just flight directly to Lisbon. The Lisbon metro Area is Big, so within that region you'd see a lot of stuff.
As portuguese I'd say Portugal is one of the most diverse countries within in terms of geography and small regional cultural quirks. Spending a week in Lisbon and spending a week in Porto although similar it'd feel like visiting different countries. Each region (North, Center, Lisbon Tejo Valley, Alentejo, Algarve, Açores and Madeira) although small in size have even smaller subregions that are very distinct and worth visiting. For real I can visit distant different countries inside my own (even though counting to "visit Australia" cause of the eucalyptus is not such a good thing, sice the eucalyptus is an invasive species).

I think that is useful to know that portuguese like most europeans dont see ethnicity the same way as americans do. So when they say that 95% identifies as portuguese it means not that they considered themselves white, but portuguese nationals. For us, race, does not identify you, so a portuguese with chinese fathers or black fathers will born in Lisbon will, 90 to 95% of the time will anwser you that he or she is portuguese first and foremost. In the subject of race, the majority of portuguese is mixed race in various degrees over the centuries. I for instance, have jewish, irish and african ancestors. What am i. Proud portuguese.

10:31 there's a lot of sea food in Portugal, but there's also a lot of meat. The meat tough, is very heavy for foreigners.
In general food in Portugal is "heavy". Within the main course there's accompaniment and main thing. Sometimes multiple accompaniments for meat or fish.... hence the "heavyness". And A LOT of different spices. In the renaissance they really wanted to get to India for the spices.
Still, it's mediterranean cousine without the Mediterranean sea, with an Atlântic touch, with a lot of Olive Oil and wine, onion, garlic and tomato on stuff.
    Plus Rice.

Hi, i don't know how much of Portuguese history you have researched and learned but let me take any doubts you could have. Yes, we we're the first to buy slaves from African kingdoms and brought them to america (Brazil). We started the Atlantic slave trade. We also where one of the first to abolish slavery after the UK. So not everything is bad. Our country was created through battle, the same as the Spanish kingdoms where. But we managed to get our independence from one of the Spanish kingdoms early on the reconquista age and where the first nation in the Iberian peninsula to have our borders consolidated. Now, being in a constant (re)conquering campaign that lasted some centuries, you can imagine that when there was no more land to conquer, water was the only choice, and there is plenty of it. We're the first to start exploring the west coast of Africa when Spain wasn't even formed yet and the kingdom of Granada was still a thing. To many people died in the sea during those times, technologies where lacking, medicine was none existent, between a third and half of the sailors died. Along the coast of the newly discovered places we established trade posts with the natives and had mutual beneficial relations. The mission of Prince Henry the navigator was to find a way to get to India so we could trade spices directly with them and circumvent the Ottoman empire as the middle man. And we manage that. Expedition by expedition, decades on the high seas, inventions and science and technologies, little by little we got further and managed not only to get to India but to china, the Philippines and even Japan. You can say we're the ones who created Globalism. By the way, Colombo was a failed explorer and is the most knowable one. Vasco da Gama was the one to get to India and Colombo got to the Caribbean. As a colonization we mostly only colonized Brazil, only much later on Angola and Moçambique where we only maintained trading ports. In Brazil we made alliances with the american tribes. There where many tribes a lot of them peaceful and others nomadic cannibalistic. As you can imagine we already had muskets and other fire arms and they only had bows and spears. The cannibalistic ones where decimated by a joint force of the portuguese and it's new native allies. Basically it was given Portuguese citizenship to the natives, so if a native men or woman married a portuguese they became portuguese also. That is not much talked about today but if you compare to other Nations it was a much better system. We didn't conquer them, we married the natives. There is a saying that God created Man, but the Portuguese created the Mixed race. And im tired of righting, can't make all of the history fit in here. You guys should definitely research some portuguese history, it's better than fiction.
God bless you and i wish you the best.
    👋

Thanks! Portugal is the oldest Country in Europe since 1143. 880yo this year. And it's multiethnic and multicultural since its birth.
The Portuguese Kingdom was born out of the guts of the Ummayad occupation of Iberian Peninsula (Al-Andalus) by what we called the "Muslim Moors" (Ummayad Caliphate, Nizari, Almoravids, Almohads, Nasrids, etc a.k.a. Arabs and Amazighs ("Berbers") from 8th to 15th Century. When the Kingdom was born integrated Iberians, Visigoths, Sephardic Jews and a lot of "Moors" that converted to Christianity and embraced the new Kingdom/Religion.
The Reconquista weren't battles between races but between different Kingdoms and Religions.
The Portuguese Kingdom defeated the "Muslim Moors" much sooner than the Spanish Kingdom did and so we started the "Age of Discovery" around 1420 after conquering Ceuta in 1415.
Millions of Portuguese Citizens have some type of ancestry in ex-Portuguese Colonies/States/Territories. Even if it's just their grandparents or just one of the parents/grandparents
For example our Prime Minister for the last 10 years, António Costa, is born and raised in Portugal but his family is from Goa-India. Portuguese territory since the early 1500's till the 20th Century. My father is Mozambican-Portuguese like Eusébio (Mozambican-Portuguese National Hero burried in the Portuguese National Pantheon. My mom's family is originally Moorish-Portuguese from Algarve (South Portugal). Millions of us have ancestors in ex-Portuguese Colonies/States/Territories like Nagazaki-Japan, Macau-China, Goa-India, Timor-Indonesia, Malacca-Malasya, Mozambique, Angola, Cabo Verde, Guiné-Bissau, São Tomé and Brasil
    Best Regards from Portugal!

13:58 Like everywhere else, unfortunatelly there's intollerance between people of different ethnic groups or skin colour. But specially in the Lisbon metropolitan Area there's a big black population, mostly from or already 2nd 3rd 4th etc generation from old colonies lie Angola, Moçambique, Guiné-Bissau, Cabo Verde, São Tomé, and also Brasil.
It's a very safe country, but like most places, there are tricky places - or... actually stigmatized places, now that there are known neigbourhoods famous for crime or poverty. - To be honest downtown Lisbon is a bit dangerous for pickpocketing robberies.
In other northern cities, like Porto and Braga I believe there's a bit more of integration going on now. Because they were not usually "black". I think people are much more welcoming, although it can happen that can be a bit stranger.
