Jodi you are right. We don't hate spain or spanish people and their languague. We just don't like to be confused. We have such a interesting culture and language of our own and usually people think we are just like Spain. We have things in common but both countries have so much amazing diferences. But then there is another thing... portuguese people will easly speak spanish but the spanish can never speak portuguese or even make an effort to do so. As most of us, in younger generations, speak english fluently we prefere it, usually to show off and to keep our "independence"😂

She is right. We don't like to be confused with the Spanish. Portugal is an OLDER nation than Spain itself. No one will care if you speak spanish because you are trying to communicate. But it will piss off people if you ASSUME that it's just the same language or you just ignore that Portugal has it's own language.
The reason why the Portuguese are so diverse as to do with the fact that we are cornered in the westernmost point in Europe and as such we received waves of migrations and invasions that just stopped there. Aside from the indo-european subtract and the natural european migrations such the Celts, the people who actually left the greatest amount of genetic influence might have been the Germanic tribes post Roman empire. Phoenicians were nothing more than traders. Real Romans did not lived here in mass numbers. Just the leaders for territorial management. Most of the military were locals hired in the conquered lands themselves. Moors had a long lasting presence but they really did not mingle that much with europeans and they were either butchered during reconquista or fled. Another mass import of people came after the reconquista where people from other countries were sent to Portugal to repopulate the now deserted areas. Thousands of Jews came to Portugal when our king refused to comply with the first inquisition. The fact that we had a global empire for aged means we had many human connections that also served as a way to diversify our genetics. Nevertheless, the dominant looks are white people with dark hair and eyes although diversity is indeed huge even within people of endless Portuguese descent.
Finally, we really do not like water that much. This is way too overstated and misunderstood. Portugal became independente and was cornered by a country that until recently always had the goal to absorb Portugal. It was a literal enemy cutting us off from all trade routes. We were small, poor and had nowhere else to turn but the sea. The amount of pain, blood and sorrow that our ancestors experienced in the ocean cannot be understood by other nations. We definitely aren't a nation of sailors today and have no pretentions to ever become one again. In fact, even our fishermen hate the struggle that the ocean represent to them. The overwhelming majority of us like to go dip in the ocean in the summer and that's the extent of our "connection" with the ocean.

Portuguese fishermen have been fishing for cod in the northern seas for centuries. The typical way of preserving cod was with salt and this was done in Portugal. Now that doesn't happen and an agreement was reached with the countries that have cod in their seas: they learned to salt cod according to the taste of the Portuguese and that's how it is bought for our consumption. There are hundreds of recipes with cod and this is the national dish.

Portuguese here. Let me clarify 22:18 the Portugal Spain relation from a Portuguese perspective. Is a love hate relation like two competitive brothers. We love them we protect them if necessary, but they are like the favorite child and the cool kid in the school so that became annoying. About speak Spanish in Portugal to be clear, we can natural understand some Spanish and can tell if you are a native speaker. If you are not a native Spanish speaker and you talk Spanish to Portuguese is like you are mixing the two. And that is what we hate, is to be confused withe the Spanish.
Is like you tell a Latino that they are Mexican even they are Cuban or something. But If you are a native Spanish speaker and you tallk to us in Spanish we will notice it and we be OK to you to speak it.
About the diversity of people before the age of discovery Portugal was literally the end of the world. So every time some nation rise and power and expand the people that where conquered fled and became himselfs the invaders of others an usually Portugal was the place where you can´t fled no more so you must stay and mingle. So the celts take europe an indo europeans fleed to Iberia the Romans invade celtcs and celts fleed to Iberia, the Huns, presure the visigotths and the Vandals that end up in the Iberia and so on. That made what would be Portugal the melting pot of europe from pre-history bronze age and classical eras.

    A few corrections:
3:25 - We're surrounded by Spain only on two sides, not three.
    4:08 - We follow the UTC 0, not +1.
5:00 - That's true but not in the way they put it in the video.
5:55 - They forgot to include East Timor, Cape Verde, S. Tomé e Príncipe and Guinea-Bissau. Those were kept until the 1974 revolution and Macau was kept until 1999.
8:35 - The river's name is Tejo, not Taje.
8:45 - The southern part is not lush, together with the Algarve it's the driest region in the country.
9:55 - They forgot to mention that Renova is even more relevant in the paper industry than Navigator. If you ever see coloured toilet paper anywhere in the world, it's made by Renova.
10:20 - They also didn't mention the Iberian Lynx, a particular species that was on the verge of extinction but was saved in time with the creation of the National Reproduction in Captivity Centre in the Algarve. It's now thriving on both sides of the border.
11:14 - I don't know why they put the Spanish word for "bacalhau" there, we don't speak Spanish.
14:36 - We invented the Caravel, not the Galleon ships.
15:36 - The football club they put in the text is not the one she's talking about but date is correct.
16:02 - It's "the festivals", not "the festival". Each saint's festival is celebrated on a different date: Santo António is on the 13th, São João on the 24th and São Pedro on the 29th.
20:18 - The japanese word "arigato" doesn't come from the Portuguese "obrigado", it already existed in the japanese language before the portuguese arrived in Japan.
To be fair to Geography Now!, they corrected some of these things in the video about the flags.

4:19 - even though on paper there are 18 districts, they don´t hold any actual political power. Instead, city municipalities are more important in that respect.
Though, the descendents of these 18 districts would be the currently called "NUT III divisions" or "Regions", there are 25 of them, and they divide the country in a very cohesive geographic-landscape-cultural way, where it's easy to see the differences between people along the country. Unfortunately, since decades ago there has been no regionalization of the country, even if suggested and encouraged by the EU.

    • @RuiCBGLima

4:38 - the second biggest city is Porto, while Porto's airport is in Maia, a municipality of the Porto metro area. Sintra and Vila Nova de Gaia are municipalities of the metro areas of Lisbon (2 million people) and Porto (1 million) respectively. The third biggest city is currently Braga, considering the inter municipality comunity, around 200K. But actually the municipalities of Braga proper, Guimarães, Famalicão and Vila Verde are closer, and combined they make up kind of a metro-area of half million people.... there's even a plan to link those by a metro area, which is nice.
Though, tot forgeting that Faro indeed has the 3rd mainland airport.
But Yeah, the definition of city in Portugal is a bit weird, and chaotic. Also there's not much intermediary divisions.

The design and development of galleons were influenced by various maritime nations, including Spain, Portugal, England, and the Netherlands.
The Portuguese nau design heavily influenced the development of galleons. Galleons inherited many features from the naus, such as the high forecastle and sterncastle, which provided more space for cannons and crew, making them suitable for both trade and warfare.

I believe we have the longest still active treaty with Portugal.
_The Anglo-Portuguese Alliance is the oldest alliance based in known history that is still in force by politics. The Treaty of Windsor was signed on May 9, 1386 between the Kingdom of Portugal and the Kingdom of England, over 630+ years ago, and is still active to this day_
_It established a treaty of "perpetual friendships, unions [and] alliances" between the two seafaring nations. It is the oldest continuous treaty in effect to this day. It was reinforced throughout history, including in 1386, 1643, 1654, 1660, 1661, 1703, 1815, and by a secret declaration in 1899_
It's why we have never waged war on one another...

The situation between Portugal and Spain is related with Identity. Some people around the world think that Portugal belongs to Spain. It is not true. So we have our Identity. However, we share many things.
By the way, our languages derive from Latin, and we Portuguese could understand Spanish but, if we go to Spain most of them don't understand us, except in Galiza.
Morover, we like Spain as our Iberian brother. I would like to know speak Spanish more fluently but, I can only use a thing that we usually call "Portunhol" 😂😂😂
Most of the time I have some results😅😅😅
Another thing...Most of we, have English as a second language because we start learning it early at the school. We see movies with original audio but with portuguese subtitles, which increases our learning.
    And this is my opinion.

Grearpt reaction video, glad to see more people learning more about Portugal a beautiful country . Being a French / Portuguese with all my family from Portugal I'm glad to see that this country gets more recognition as it should have. As many mentioned in the comments, we could be ok if you go to Portugal and speak a bit of Spanish and try to learn a bit of Portuguese, the same would be with Soanish people if you talk to them in Portuguese or French people if you talk to them in Italian or so because they're simply all Latin based languages. If you go to a foreign country it's always good to know some basics words in local language like hello, please, goodbye, thanks and so on. Younger Portuguese people ,usually have a good English level so you can go on and Portuguese people are really nice welcoming and helping people for most part of them . As regards for hiyr difference between Portugal and Spain, it's one awkward situation from world war 2, since French government and Spanish government were friendly with Germany they swit h their time zone to Berlin instead of being in Greenwich time zone. Portugal was considered a neutral zone and kept it's time zone to London, still keeping their so long ties with UK. The food us good , the landscape is beautiful, people are nice , they do have their share of idiots and so like any country, but life style us very pleasant there. It definitely worth a visit in Europe. Great video, take care.

Portugal was actually "occupied" by Spain Kingdom for 60 years - 1580 to 1640 (the Felipe kings dinasty, the Habsburghs), because of a throne succession problema: the 16 year old Portuguese prince and throne successor D. Sebastiao died in battle with the moors in nowadays Morocco (better yet: he disappeared, body never found), and the closest relative was the then Spain King (Felipe of Habsburgh). So, he claimed the throne to Portugal. But Portuguese never rested untill restoring full independence, and that's saying a lot for such a small country in numbers compared to Spain.

Spanish worlds can be found around 60% or 70% in Portuguese. However, some words are totally different or that ones that are equal, may have a different meaning. Secondly, Portuguese accent is easier for Spaniards compared with Brazil. Well, for Spaniards for me, Portuguese has become easier to learn due to a lot of similarities. I'm living in Colombia, so we learn the Portuguese from Brazil, which it has an accent a little bit more complicated to learn 🙂. Words as 'freezer' in Portugal they say 'frigorífico (same in Spain)', but in Brazil is 'geladeira'. In Portugal they say 'zumo' for juice (in Spain we say 'zumo'), but in Brazil is 'suco'. Cellphone is 'telémovel ('teléfono móvil or just móvil in Spain)' in Portugal, and 'celular' is in Brazil. Well, as you can see, despite Portugal has better relationship with France, they have more words closer to Spaniard culture. It's jus fun

No, we revolted and expelled them. That is one of the reasons why we don't enjoy people assuming we're a province of Spain or not being native Spanish speakers and speaking to us in Spanish.

What João said about Spanish or speaking Spanish is a bit a mix between a funny line and a urban myth... we speak Spanish, or what in Spain and Portugal we call "Portuñol". Both languages are so close that, for Spaniards, we can speak Portuguese with Spanish accent and we welcome that. Spaniards do not have to speak English for God sake.... and by the way, they don't. In terms of speaking foreign languages we are more open and fearless but Spaniards, even if they are the overly confident and bold Iberian, yet they avoid foreign languages. Well, we sort of complement each others. Saying this so that you do not misjudge our relationship with the Spanish, the essence of the problem isn't about Spanish speaking Portuguese language or not, it is about foreigners to Iberia speaking Spanish in Portugal... lets be fair here, it makes no sense. If you can't speak Portuguese just try your best English, because by speaking Spanish in Portugal gives the impression that you choose the wrong side of the border. In Portugal speak Portuguese, otherwise speak English (a lingua franca). This doesn't mean that we do not like our Spanish neighbours and, in the most truthful sense, brothers.

So... Basically, if you speak Spanish, we will understand you but we will be really annoyed.
Depending on the person they might try to inform you or correct you, or, if you get a special kind of asshole, they might flip you off and ignore you.

Its just logic, portuguese people speak portuguese, so why would you speak a different language? (Spanish) and assume they are the same?
    its incredibly offensive and annoying
Its like comparing a chinese person and their language to a Japanese one while saying they are the same
Its xenophobic, and its the same with portugal and spain
