  • Here I review the Luban rebate block plane and tune up to be an excellent addition to the toolbox
This is not sponsored in anyway and was bought with my own hard earned funds ;-)

I think they all need a bit of work when you first get them. Nice looking plane, and now it's a nice working plane.

Thx for posting, good review, i especially liked the shaving before and after honing, that shows the result of your effort but also that is loooks a good plane

Nice addition to your tool box, Rutlands have this listed for £79.99. Have you tried planning wood with nails in haha Thanks for sharing

Hi Jim, Sure have planed nails unfortunately, got a big scar in the sole of my no4 with a hidden nail. I got this one from Rutlands and happy with the price but does need a couple of hours to tune it in. Thanks for watching Cheers Steve

I found the mouth on mine so narrow it clogs straight away. I’m contemplating filing it more open

    Hi Steve, Great honest review.
Would you expect to spend that amount of time "truing" up a plane before it works as designed?
Apart from sharpening the plane iron.
At £80 from Rutlands I would expect it to be better than the one you had.
Please tell me if I'm wrong.
After you had tuned it, it worked beautifully so great job on the tuning.
    Take care Steve. Cheers, Huw

Hi Huw, Unless you go for top end planes then you should expect to have to tune them in, (the casting process is the issue, the Far East versions they tend to grind them before the casting has settled) as for this one it wasn’t that bad really and it’s only because I’m a bit of a perfectionist that it took as long as it did, I could have got away with sharpening the blade and it’d been ok, but what’s the fun in that. £80 I think is a decent price for this type of plane a Lie Nielsen one is easily a £100 more. I would think that Lie Nielsen, Veritas, Clifton, Bridge City planes might be good to go from the box. If you want to check out real top end planes search for Hotley planes 😉 Cheers Steve

@@Phenrica Hi Steve, I just checked out Hotley Planes. Start at £2500 😮😮😮. My craft teacher in school use to run a night school, in Silversmithing, as well which I used to attend and there was a gentleman there, Em Bev, who made his own small plane and used dovetails to secure the sides to the base and it was an amazing piece of work. Em was my teacher's teacher by the way. Cheers, Huw

What do you think had the greatest effect? The re-flattening of the base or the honing of the blade?

Honing the blade every time, I also think with a rebate plane the cuts through the sides probably a weak point and some slight deflection in the base to be expected. Still a nice plane that cuts really well. Thanks for the watch & comment hope this helps. Cheers Steve

The only thing I don't like about this plane is the brass adjuster knob which has a shoulder running in the blade slot. After a while the brass shoulder wears and becomes loose in the slot and introduces backlash. I prefer other makes which have a steel pin which fits into a hole in the blade. Shame as the rest of the plane is well made.

That works well now, the problem with modern day manufacturers ,especially foreign ones, is that the castings have not been allowed to age before they are ground, so when they do settle down you get distortion, this looks like one of those tools we get from rutlands where we spend more hours getting them to work, than we spend actually using them to work. Stay safe! Chris B.

Hi Chris, agree and spot on and yep it’s a Rutlands purchase. I’ve always wanted on as I’m fed up with banging my knuckles when using my shoulder plane 😉 after the tune up it’s performing well. Cheers Steve
