The completely flat side of the stretcher bars create the back side of the wood frame. The side with the small round at the outer edge should face the front side of the canvas. The raised edge holds the stretched canvas away from the full surface of the stretcher bars. You stapled the canvas to what should be the front side of the frame. This results in the canvas laying directly on top of the full surface of the bars. On higher end stretcher bars, they will actually create a bevel across the full width of the stretcher bars for the same reason - when stretched the canvas will then be fully suspended over the frame with only the very edge in contact with the edge of the bars.

@ciscospice that is something I should've mentioned in my video. So the stretcher bars that I was using have a round edge on both sides of the stretcher bar and one is just a tab more pronounced than the other. I stapled the canvas to the lesser of the two rounded sides, which would be the back. But not all stretcher bars have rounded edges on both sides, I've used many that only have it on the one side. Something for all artists to keep in mind as not all supplies are created the same. I'll make sure to note that in my next canvas stretching video.

I wish there are stretcher bars available in our country. I also tried making my own stretched canvas, but I just felt that there's something wrong with it. I will check out the website you mentioned. Thank you so much miss Rachelle!

Thank you for watching @HanPaints I hope you are one day able to purchase stretcher bars with ease. Making your own stretcher bars can definitely be tricky!

Thank you for this most informative video. I was wondering, can the same technique be applied to a half inch or 1 inch thick wooden panel? Thinking this might keep the surface from bowing in while painting on it. Also, my intention is to stretch black velvet material and I’m hoping this process will work the same for that type of surface

So you can do this on flat wood however the edges are more likely to show threw. I actually stretch a canvas in college using 2x4 because I wanted to go big but didn't want to take the time to make stretcher bars that big. The downside is that you can see some of the lines for the inner edge of those 2x4s. Hopefully that makes sense

Yeah my hammer is pretty sad @Kevin Bayer . I've had it for years and can't justify getting a new one since that one works just fine...it's just not the prettiest to look at
