@@nickh-w1563 Paul Newman had never won one after years of being nominated and they had to give it to him. It's pretty cool that Dex was even nominated, it was a small film and they could easily have ignored it.
I saw Round Midnight in a small art theater on the first day of its release.... Only movie I've ever seen where not one person got up until every last note of the final credits. And then, 100 people stood as one, and gave it a standing ovation.
Great comment. Small art theatres showing films like Round Midnight are rare round my way. Maybe studio 5 in a multiplex matinee with six people eating popcorn and rustling sweet paper before walking out after ten minutes. Wonderful film though.
We were living in DC in the mid 80s when this movie came out.The morning after the second time I saw it I had to take the train to Baltimore. I'm walking down the long runway to the trains, only me and the most gorgeous Elder I had ever seen. As we passed each other I nodded and she graced me with a smile. I was so enthralled by her stately beauty that I hadn't noticed the extra tall man way behind her slowly meandering down the hall was Dexter Gordon. I calmed myself. "Dexter Gordon is that you?" He stooped over and attempted to focus on me. He put out his hand accompanied by a massive grin. We shook hands, his fingers reaching halfway up my forearm. I said, "Man, I just saw "'round Midnight" last night. You know you're alive just to bear witness, right?" He straightened up and reared back so far for a moment I thought he might fall backwards. He said something completely unintelligible, somehow stayed on his feet and impossibly grinned even more broadly. He was still rumbling something as he walked away. Dex was completely drunk at 6:40 in the morning. I stood there watching him ever so slowly heel-toeing away. The gorgeous Elder was waiting for him. As Dex approached her she took his arm and asked, "What did he say? Did he like the movie?" I could not make out Dex's response and wondered whether she could, but I watched them 'til they turned out of sight into the train station. I would not have cared if I had missed my train.
Yes, Dexter Gordon and the gorgeous Elder were dressed immaculately; both in suits and top coats. He had on a pork pie hat pushed back exposing his wrinkled forehead and raised eyebrows.
Awesome anecdote , I have heard he was a Chronic alcoholic . On Gigs he be so far behind the beat. Whatever , i love his tone , up there with Coltrane .
As this scene wonderfully shows, Dexter Gordon was, among other things, one of the great ballad players in all of Jazz. Over & over, one catches oneself holding one's breath in a kind of suspense, waiting to hear how he will turn each new phrase into something that seems musically inevitable & emotionally true, the very moment it's complete--which he invariably does.
One feels thrashed by genius, ruined and crushed by love, by great art, and we all know how we are in a shadow of reverence, of respectful love, but learning...
Tears drop from my eyes ... I am a sax player. I recorded this tune in my quartet first CD. After seeing this video i'll never play this tune the same way... Thank you Mr Dexter Gordon
Beautiful is the right word to describe this film, there really is not another like it, people might say, genius or must see, both true but in the end beautiful is simply the best.
At 1:56 is a cameo by Francis Paudras whose book Dance of the Infidels: A Portrait of Bud Powell was used as the basis for this film Round Midnight. Instead of a pianist like in the book, Dexter Gordon, a friend of Bud Powell was able to play the character but as a saxophonist. The book is a great insight into what the jazz scene was like in Europe. And says a lot about the author's integrity, he and his wife took in Bud Powell as a family member and looked after him and became his guardian the story is real testament to friendship and the love Paudras had for the music. A film about Bud Powell and the original Paudras story on screen would be really great. It is sad when a great innovator who gave their life completely to the art form and transforms that art form and then dies destitute. cheers to you Bud Powell and Francis Paudras!
To all of those who have criticised the playing, musical genre, syncopation ,chord progressions ,birth dates ,periods in time and general criticism. I ENJOYED THIS FILM. I play alto and baritone . Can't read music at all but can follow changes by ear instantly .
Wow!! Double Wow!!! I am not really a fan of Jazz per se, but seeing and listening to this classic song played this way by one of the greats is just heaven! Anyone who loves music can appreciate this. Dexter's playing here and throughout this marvelous film is superb! His acting is also wonderful. In fact the entire film is a knockout! I urge, compell and implore everyone to see this masterpiece of a film. Granted, there aren't many in the genre, but this has to be the best jazz film ever made. An vastly underrated gem!
I met Dex in NYC. It was my birthday and he signed a record and gave me some of his joint. Saw this flick when it came out. This piece still make me, at 59, ball my eyes out. Not to mention when Frances gets the letter under the door and finds out Dale died. Can't take it.
Beautiful! Wonderful to see and hear Dexter and the band.Unusual for John McLaughlin to play such a minimalist guitar solo, rather than his usual "shredding"; but it works a treat!
Firenze, io e la mia ragazza entriamo quasi per caso in un piccolo cinema con le poltrone verdi, completamente vuoto....un'esperienza onirica, travolgente, Grazie Bertrand
Maybe a lot of people don't note this consciously, but how very much wonder a movie gains filming a real live performance, instead of the usual play-back! Well, you need some real musicians...this case is special because is a masterwork

DEX should've won an Oscar for this amazing role !!!...was one of my favourite musicians .
And for this one as well.... ua-cam.com/video/zKPFIDoB7D0/v-deo.html

I’m new of the best films ever made portraying the life of a musician. No actor could ever could do a better job than what Dexter Gordon does here.
The essence of what we all, call Jazz.
One of the greatest clips ever.I never get enough of it.Pure joy. What a talent.
I'm crying .... i don't know why but i am.......
I’m watching high and I love it! Long live Dexster!
Give it up for Dexter Gordan, Pierre Michelot, John Mclaughlin, Herbie Hancock and Billy Higgins
deep and spiritual, mr. gordon, thank you for your inspiration in life and music, always.
Dextor was just magical to ears.
To me, this is the best version of Body & Soul, bar none.
I would bring this to the desert island or the end of the world...

Incredible, a towering, great film.
Old Heads know that's Herbie Hancock on them keys.
Dexter Gordon, the Master, period.
A great performance expressing the essence of the jazz scene. Dexter. An old master.

ahah ah at the end of that track he could not resit shredding a bit - in the movie you can also see Dexter's face whe he hears McLaughlin shredding
Period approriate, no?
It would've been amazing if they filmed this in black and white. Still, the film is quite spectacular!
Just beautiful
