Actors got enough fame for what they do, i wish also people behind CGI got the fame they deserve, cause this is amazing and they are the main part of this art called cinema.
This has got my blood pumping. I'm doing vfx at Uni at 39 yrs old and love it. I think its a magnificent art form. Just as much work goes into vfx as it would filming non cgi. It just saves a lot of money having people do it in a virtual space rather than lugging equipment everywhere. This talent blows my mind and I hope I'm as good as this when I've finished.
Gagagaga! This is ART! Cloth sim is absolutely amazing. Destruction effect is breath taking. Everything is perfect. Except Sandra bullock didn't wear space diaper when she undress... Joke apart I want to say a mega BRAVO to Framestore and Arnold renderer!
It really was spectacular to watch. I cant remember thinking about CGI at all while watching, and as it turns out pretty much everything you see is CGI. Gravity sets the standard for future films of similar calibre
Well its not that mutch cgi when you in space its black screen with some with dots that is space and stars at most of screen that not so Hard to do anny more. But The other part of CGI was amazing
As a 14 year old by who is in love with visual effects and fascinated by all of the hard work and effort put into a film like this id have to say this break down alone is one of the more beautiful things iv seen this year, and hope to one day be a big part of one of these major productions.
Remarkable. This really is at the bleeding edge of CG and simulation. Stunning work, and made an impossible to create film possible. Work of genius on all fronts! I never thought the interior shots aboard space stations were all completely CG backgrounds (that's what I got from this. They look truly real, especially even more so in 3D. Wow. Several Oscars, both technical and most of all artistic need to be handed to this film at the Oscars.
Amazing! I never even realized how much CG was used. Especially on the interiors. Insane! Only a matter of time until we get that level of realism / immersion into Games and VR Oculus Rift.
Unfortunately it will take decades to achieve the amount of processing power needed for real-time simulations to be as good as these rendered animations in video games.
One thing I liked was that when the space station was ripped to shreds it was silent, as it would be in real life (since sound can't travel through space). They really tried to get the science behind this movie right.
The effects in this movie are so stunning that I genuinely thought they build exteriors for the stations and shuttles. It's just f***ing perfect. Though I have to wonder, why was their fire in the vacuum of space?
The fact that Framestore utilized a whitescreen, rather than a green or a blue, is very intuitive. I can only assume that this was a major contributing factor to the sense of depth and weightlessness felt in the film. For one to understand exactly why a whitescreen however, one must remember that all things that vanish out towards a horizon (or "nothingness," in this case) will become lighter and less defined. So from what I have observed, the whitescreen acted as tool for depth and space (no pun intended). It wasn't just for character removal.
Usually I'm impressed by VFX but I always believed it would stifle the creativity of screenwriters, for example movies like transformers. But this film completely changed my mind! I went to the theater expecting gimmicky visuals to compensate for the lack of writing but it was the opposite way around! THE VISUALS SUPPORTED THE GREAT STORYTELLING!!! who would have though that was possible in todays blockbusters!
I'm not sure what they used, but here is a quote/webpage about it. "As the simulation couldn’t be split, it had to be done on one machine and as a result it was taking up to 24 hours. “When you press the ‘sim’ button on the farm it was like launching something into space! We had to come up with some ideas to get around it.” As with the destruction of the ISS a low resolution simulation was required to mock up the movement more quickly. The parachute dynamic setup was split into six dynamic parts, with each having its own material property: rigid metal, thick ropes, thin ribbons, silk canopy for example. “It was definitely one of the biggest challenges” says Sylvain." - web.archive.org/web/20160327034817/www.framestore.com/news/gravity-cg-sets-and-suits
Not mainstream enough to appeal to wider audiences I guess. I assume the studios don't think that the general public would enjoy viewing VFX breakdowns. I for one love them, more blu-rays should feature them.
I read that for this movie each frame would take a rendering time of 50hrs and it would take 7000yrs to complete the whole movie if single computer processor was used. That's some cool stuff to know.
Did it convince you when you watched the film? If you didn't know the difference between reality and fiction, then I'd say they did an excellent job. The actors did much more than simply provide their faces, you know. Cuàron excels at one-shot scenes, and the actors had to endure rigorous physical training to meet the demands of the film. That's film-making at its finest.
JustifiedMayhem32 But it doesn't allow suspension of disbelief at all. When I'm in the theatre watching a Life of Pi, Avatar or Gravity I can not immerse myself even in the slightest bit. Just knowing that 99% was shot in front of a greenscreen or made completely with vfx pulls me out.
Mr. Tulip Well, the simple solution to all that really is to not watch the VFX breakdowns. It'd be like magician telling you how he performs his magic trick; the illusion is foiled. It seems like you're actively looking for how these movies are made, but why bother if you'll just turn around and wish for the old days of cinema? Obviously they couldn't have made this movie without CG, but you have to admire their effort to make it as convincing as possible. CG has come a long way.
Mr. Tulip The difference with Life of Pi and Avatar is that you know damn well that vfx had to be employed to play out the scenes! Gravity isn't science fiction.....it's science fact. What happened up there could, in theory, happen up there today! As has already been alluded to.....when you CAN'T tell where the CG kicks in.....then booyarr, Framestore pulled it off! I've been a fan of movies and behind the scenes vfx since I was knee high to a Jawa, and even I struggled to see where the reality met CG. A truly astonishing movie. :-)
will there be a full length "how it was made" movie? the day will come when this level of detail can be done in real time for a video game... perhaps 10 years or so?
10 years might be a little generous, you know to render these final CGI scenes the data is sent to a room with HUNDREDS of connected computers, which even then don't process the images in real time? Video games will get better, but it's far from movie CGI quality,
idk, in 10 years we have gone from... my god... 10 years ago was HL2. where has the time gone? we are however close to moving into bio or quantum computing developments taking hold over the cilia ones. perhaps it will be 15 years but man technology moves fast...
GSTHb It#S nearly impossible to do REALISTIC human 3D Animation because of the uncanny valley. Maybe it will be possible to do that with motion capture in a few years. But for what?! It doesn't makes anything easier..
Generation Soundtrack Yeah, i know. When im saying that actors are going to become obsolete, i mean in the comming decades... 2030, 2040, 2050.... so in many years from now.
Generation Soundtrack Motion Capture in a few years? Have a look at the BTS of Avatar. I don't think actors will be obsolete. You'll have CGI characters in more movies (MoCap by real great actors), but still, acting will be acting, always.
In general its called composting. Alot of the VFX is done using in house proprietary software. However alot of the techniques used are similar across multiple tools such maya and 3D studio max.
Ignore a little the prev. comment. This is a process of compositing (mixing real footage with 3D). Professionals use a software called The foundry NUKE. Also you could use others for more basic things, as After effects.
EgAnimatiOn You can do some things with C4D for sure. However at the level you are seeing here you would have to turn to solutions such as Maya for 3D and NUKE for compositing as mentioned by Oscar. However like I previously said, whilst VFX houses do utilize some these packages they often use there own proprietary software. Check out ILM's YT if you want to learn more. .
For 3D maya and C4D could work... but NUKE is enssential for compositing.... is the most professional tool for that and if you search a little around the internet you could find how this software was executed in most of the scenes. Remember, 3D modeling and compositing are different things... Maya is also essential, but not to "mix" real footage with 3D.
So... would I be right in saying that every single image in this film besides Sandra Bullock and George Clooney and the final scene where she's back on earth was completely computer generated?
this is awesome lol and one of the best CGI ever made, I loved to watch it in 3d everything was super well made. and for the haters: if you don't like movies with cgi you dont like every movie, cg is not something new it has been in movies before you born. my favorite things to watch Gravity :), The Shawshank Redemption, Fight Club, Star Wars, Spirited Away, The Matrix, Gladiator, WALL-E, game of thrones.... and guess what they all have cgi and all over the place!!!! I wanna see fantasy worlds being build, and things that are impossible being filmed!!! I love sci fi, and love fantasy books. I'm amazed that some director, and rich investors have the courage to go and build something this awesome, its literally like bringing a dream to life.
Actors got enough fame for what they do, i wish also people behind CGI got the fame they deserve, cause this is amazing and they are the main part of this art called cinema.
A few Oscars for visuals and sound, I'm sure that is credit where credits due :P
These artists will be remembered forever.

It's been over three years, and I firmly believe this is still the best visual effects put to film so far.
When you consider the amount of it then I agree, but otherwise Blade Runner 2049 has the best visual effects ever
9 years later it's still unbeaten.

You can't tell what is real and what is CG anymore...
That's amazing. The amount of work in this film is impressive.
Fantastic, well done Framestoret, you have pioneered a new era.

So, basically, the only thing in majority of shots that was not CG is actor's faces? Holy crap. O_O

Here's hoping they don't declare bankruptcy for doing a good job.
there are some that their upper body is used and the lower part which is the legs in space suit is CG

Great Job guys!!
WOOOW this is the Technology and Visionary making them to believe .
For anyone complaining about the heavy use of CGI: let's see you make an action movie about space without the use of any CGI.
CG of this movie is great !!
Framestore at it again
Why didn't these kind of sequences didn't appear in over 2 hours of blu-ray bonus features?... sounds didn't make sense to me...

Stanley Kubrick would be proud!
I doubt it.
CG wasn't so important for him as the overall dense atmosphere. I bet it would be just a tool for him to visualize that. Nothing more.
