    Actually the reason old times are full of so many morbid folk tales, is exactly because the times were so hard. They are meant as cautionary tales to keep children from entering danger. Don't go near the rushing river where you could fall and drown, because an old lady will pull you in. Don't go into the forest where you could get lost and killed by an animal, because the trolls will catch and eat you. The simplicity of the stories, implying an intelligent force, is easier to understand as dangerous, rather than the regular, mundane dangers of life. The colorful tales also help children remember the lessons learned, and the vivid imagination of the children ensures that the beast they need to avoid is sufficiently frightening, to keep them at bay.

      Very succinctly said. This is exactly why fairy tales and old wives tales are the way they are, they are stories to give hopes and dreams when times seem dark and hopeless. While cautionary tales are told to protect what we hold most dear, our precious young from danger they can't quite comprehend just yet. What a great way of conveying these truths.

      Definitely true! And it's also important to keep in mind that fairytales were also important for adults too. For example, the story of Bluebeard wouldn't offer the best lessons for kids (unless they wanted to teach young girls not to discover their future husband's murder dungeon), so it shows that it was a fairytale intended just as much for adults.
      It's pretty much like a horror story for fathers and brothers of young girls back in those times, fearing their loved ones unknowingly being married off to a monster.

    The chair underneath the man, who hanged himself at the beginning, is kind of interesting. Not only is the chair still standing, even though using this method of suicide, would've resulted in it being kicked over. But it's also way too far down to have been used as a ledge to step into the noose. What this tells you is that the chair had nothing to do with the death of this man, and might've been placed there by someone else.

    Finding out the gnome six eats is the runaway kid from the DLC made me actually sob. You do so much for him to help him escape, and he unlike six is made to be much more likable. The story intentionally juxtaposes six's ruthless survival instincts with runaway kid's compassion. When I played as six, I was less fueled by wanting *her* to survive and more by my own burning curiosity to learn about the world she lives in. With the runaway kid, however, I wanted him to LIVE so bad. It just goes to show how in this series, kindness is a weakness

    • @UltimateMustacheBros
      @UltimateMustacheBros 8 місяців тому +53

      My personal theory is that the Maw itself is an entity that affects people, we clearly see the same with the tower. I like the thought that these massive entities are capable of warping and twisting people, either by driving them mad, or by them being compatible with the entity and becoming basically workers for it (like the janitor and chefs, potentially being highly compatible with the lady and essentially lending her the same abilities as it has since she essentially constantly feeds it, kind of operating like a hive mind but allowing certain people to almost hold higher position than the rest). I think this explains the hunger that constantly worsens, and the insane nature of the guests (who would be just driven mad by the maw, being incompatible with it). I think the tower in the second game only made me believe this more, since certain entities like the doctor and teacher are warped and stuck in an endless loop of doing one task that really has no meaning or benefit anymore, while others are turned into mindless freaks that only have an animalistic instinct to either listen to/watch the signal, or force others into their same fate. I also think Mono being somehow able to control the signal is more a symptom of being compatible with it than evidence that he is the thin man. I think the thin man is just replaced by him (I honestly hate the time loop theory soooo much for a game like this, it feels so lazy as an explanation in a world where SO much is odd and intricate and even the comics seem to have more interesting answers than "oh its a loop and I guess mono just constantly reincarnates but also for some reason it happens before his old self dies because the signal is weird?"). I also love thinking of it this way because it feels more horrifying in a way, if there's entities like the maw and tower who whether consciously or not draw people in and corrupt them, people having a very small chance of "surviving" the encounter if they're compatible but only living on as warped and mad monsters bound to certain tasks, it almost feels lovecraftian - Like there's no possible way to escape, which makes this looming feeling of dread already heavy in the Little Nightmares world even worse.

      I definitely believe that Six only ate the gnome because of her knowing that the sausage was made of the meat of other children. From the start to the end of the game she has no was of knowing where they came from or what they are. To her, she probably thought that it would be worse to consume a not living item made of human flesh even when it’s being held out to her, than to eat a still living thing that cannot speak or show facial expression and of which she doesn’t know the origin of.

    • @Poeneutral
      @Poeneutral 7 місяців тому +62

      It's pretty well implied that Six' hunger is not natural, and that what she actually needs to feed on, is not food, but life itself. You'll notice that after she gains her powers, she takes something from the patrons, which kills them. The same thing which the lady did, but much faster. The metaphor for overconsumption is pretty clear, and I think her deciding to eat the gnome shows the side of her which has gotten a taste for the souls of others.

    For the last boss battle against the masked lady, my theory is that Six is using the mirror to exorcise her. In Shinto belief, small shrined hand held mirrors (considering the mirror is hidden behind a locked door or sorts, it could be considered the masked woman's "personal shrine") can be used to exorcise evil spirits by 'reflecting them away', and break when their purpose has been achieved. So, Six wasn't fighting the masked woman but whatever evil power was residing inside her, pushing it "out" of the masked woman and, ultimately, consumining it to be it's next host for... well, aid whatever twisted ideas Six might have.

    • @NuvyHotnogger

      It's possible that the lady started out like 6, but discovered what she had done. She isn't actually disfigured, but sees herself as a monster. She breaks the mirrors arround her because se can't stand to look in her own eyes and wears the mask in case she can't avoid it. It adds an extra tragic note to the fight, as six defeats her by showing her who she is, and then immediatly becomes the same, repeating the cycle.

      I think the power Six has after absorbing the Lady will in the end consume Six too. We see this in the Little Nightmare DLC, of how the Lady is old and wrinkled and drove her mad.
      And the fact that Six after destroying all the Mini Lady statue is given the Lady mask is a subtle remarks that The Mask finds its succesor.
      If i can combine this two, then its probably that The Lady is in fact Six. She wears the mask after we get it and have to absorb everyone too sustain her hunger, which in turn corrupted her body into that of The Lady. Same as Mono slowly corrupted by the entity and became the Thin Man.
      And i think that both Six and Mono represent Two of the Seven deadly sins. Six who always hunger and never stops her craving is Gluttony. And Mono who has considerable strenght and apptitude by holding a weapon and use it to bring down and destroy everything violently, and his aftermath who is full of Anger and spites to everyone except himself is what we call Wroth.

      I feel like it means more to the story to have Six make decisions based on a lack of compassion, or maybe a sinister side to her. She's a kid, but she's allowed to be morally grey, or even downright villainous. These games are meaningful because of the darker aspects, so to me, trying to explain away Six's actions kind of seems like missing the point, but I also don't want to take away anyone's right to interpret the story.

    I think the part that unsettles me the most about the Twin Chefs is the music that plays whenever they spot you. In any other context, the sound of a tuba or trombone playing in time with the steps of a large, overweight figure would solely be used for comedic effect. Yet I vaguely recall having my own nightmares of being stalked by a giant, dopey creature who wants to catch and/or eat me, all while similar goofy music would play, telling me to get away. I grew up watching shows like Barney or Sesame Street, so I wasn’t necessarily afraid of full-body suits. What scared me back then was the idea of confronting something that would normally be considered friendly or silly, but instead turns out to be deeply sinister (which may partially explain why I’ve grown to have a soft spot for Mascot Horror as an adult).

The Doctor creates and monitors mannequin patients in a hospital setting. The only real "people" are those seemingly responsible for the false humans as well as the masses of faceless "nobodies" glued to their TVs. It's being made by Supermassive Games from what I found, also known for making Until Dawn. Whether that's a good or bad thing depends on how you see it, but the fact that the giant baby monster in the trailer is actually concept art from the previous games, at least shows they're making the effort to try and honour the series.

    If you go to the scene with the hung man at 2:59 and compare it with the scene of mono becoming the Thin Man 1:38:25 you can see that the chair he sits on is the same one under the man hanging. The characters also have the same lower body design with a small gap between the pants and the shoes.

    Little Nightmares is a series that i cant find the words to describe my love for. It gives me this warm feeling in my chest, the music, atmosphere, design, its all so beautiful. Even though no one says a word, Mono and Six have become such iconic characters in my eyes, especially Mono. The twist ending made me so sad and desperate for a way to save him and a third game. Im so happy and ecstatic that we ARE actually getting Little Nightmares 3.
    During the hospital i was hoping you would show this video from tiktok i saw, where a players strategy was to just spin mono around while moving forward like a tornado XD.
    i have a theory and a few ideas for the lore behind the world of little nightmares, the symbolism of eyes everywhere and that nasty flesh creature when the six gets freed. The eyes could be representing this Lovecraftian thing, consuming everything through the tv signal.
    But now six after the maw also has this power to absorb things, which made me think, what if she goes back with this new power and tries to absorb the eyeball creature?? Maybe that was her goal all along?

    • @Joeh_
      @Joeh_ 8 місяців тому +1

      I think that the flesh eye monster is the thing that turns people into nightmares, when mono gets betrayed the flesh closes in around him and then the tall man scene happens, I think that's why there is eyes everywhere throughout the entire game

    This explanation of Six completely changed my perspective of her. I used to believe she was simply an inherently evil person, a callous protagonist, as if we were following in the steps of someone who has turned into a villain due to some inexplicable "darkness" inside of her.
    However, after following your explanation, I've reached the interpretation that, rather than being a "bad" person, Six's cruelty is simply the result of endured trauma built up overtime during her time in the twisted world she finds herself in. Given that 2 is a prequel, you can somewhat witness her descent into becoming a more ruthless person after going through each obstacle in the story.
    First, she's evidently either kidnapped by the Hunter, or hiding out in his home, unable to escape him by herself. And it seems that, from the tally marks on the wall, she's been there for a while. The music box her only source of comfort, paralleled in her boss fight. Then, as pointed out, throughout her journey with Mono, although his intentions are good and his heart is in the right place... He lets her down rather frequently. The bullies kidnapping her, although being made up for through Mono's journey to rescue her, definitely left a mark on her, and I feel like her brutal attack of the bully after we find her isn't some indication of her "inherent" violent tendencies, but rather a quick manifestation of the fear they induced in her rising to the surface - as in, her anger towards them being let out through her murdering one of them, as if taking back her power in a way. Then as they go on further into the messed up city, the other instance of her violence peeking through is her snapping the fingers of a mannequin's hand in the Hospital while we weren't in the room, which I find to possibly be a stress response on her part. And as mentioned, the time in which we jumped to save ourselves, then hiding from the Thin Man and allowing her to be taken... I feel like 2 is where we get to witness the trauma endured in this world weighing down on her, turning her into a much more cut-throat individual. As Mono was quite literally her only semblance of safety, having it be seemingly ripped away from her, even if only for brief moments until he came back for her, is indubitably traumatic. Him breaking her music box towards the end, her only comfort as she found herself disfigured and mutated, was something of a breaking point for her as well. I think she let go of him for the mere fact that she didn't trust him anymore, that she found him to be a liability in her mission to escape. I don't completely discredit the idea that maybe she just knew he would become the Thin Man, but I never found much basis for this theory, as I don't think she experienced the time loop. I think she simply found it inconvenient to keep him alongside her, and in her feelings of betrayal and abandonment, got back at him once the chance presented itself. So Six is a bad person, but it's only natural that she became one after enduring what she's gone through. It's not that her actions are justified, but they are certainly expected from living in an environment such as this one.
    And what's even more interesting is that, whereas Six succeeds and thrives through her merciless methods, Mono, an empathetic character who goes out of his way to backtrack and save her, even if he doesn't always do a great job at showing it, ends up abandoned and trapped in the city, not having made it out like she did. As if in this world, empathy is disencouraged, dangerous even, which reminds me of the first game, where the two instances of someone offering food to Six rendered them in a much more vulnerable position (i.e the child at the cafeteria who gave her bread and remained hungry, and Runaway Kid who gave her the sausage and ended up being eaten.) It ties back to your idea that the game can be a representation of capitalism. When you step on others to get your way, you get far. When you go back and try to help others, you're punished by the system. You don't win by being kind. There's no room for that in this world.

    To add to Six being shaped by the world around her - there's actually a mobile game, Very Little Nightmares, where you play as the original owner of the yellow raincoat. The girl in the raincoat helps Six, who seemingly helps her fend off the antagonist in return - only for the villain to not be dead, and to die in a mutual kill with the protagonist. Having tried to help another and failed, it makes sense that Six stops trying to save anyone but herself.
    In addition, when commenting on Six dropping Mono, the official twitter account said "Extracting someone from a fantasy can be deeply upsetting for everyone involved". She was happy and safe with her music box as a monster, but Mono took it upon himself to "save" her, taking that escapism away from her. Her decision to drop him could have easily been out of spite - he took away her comfort in the world because he didn't want to be alone.

    just the artstyle and animations alone is insanely amazing and the fact no one ever talks makes it so much better tho the game can be quite clunky and far from perfect it still will forever have a big place in my heart.
    my theory of the lady is that what we see in the mirror is what she actually looks like but har magic keeps her young so when she looks in a mirror she sees her true self kinda like the story of the immortal man with a painting that ages instead of him as long as he doesn't look at it he will never age. (forget the name)
    to me it feels the wall of flesh is a greater entity if not meant to be symbolic seems the main villain as it seems to control the thin man in some way or use him rather as the signal as the sequal seems very eldrich in nature.
    Man can't wait to get my hands on the 3rd game and I really do hope it turns out good as a new Company is taking over aswell as with coop i doubt we will get much answers on the world as a whole but hey we can always hope.

    Regarding the third game, Tarsier has no involvement, unfortunately. After the second game, they decided to move on to other projects, feeling they’d told the story they wanted to with the first two games. Bandai Namco, on the other hand, still has the rights to the IP, so have handed over developing privileges to another studio. I’m cautiously optimistic that it could still be a good sequel. That being said, it will be a truly momentous task to not only recreate, but add to the mythology of the twisted, unique world Tarsier created.

    That ending with Mono pissed me off so. SO much. He saved her 3 times. THREE FUCKING TIMES, AGAINST IMPOSSIBLE ODDS. And the one time he falters OUT OF DESPERATION she judges him for until his literal end, even though seconds earlier was one of the three times he saved her.
    Edit: Two times, both out of desperation. I have no doubts Six would have done identical shit. It's easy to judge when you literally don't have a chance to see from the other side. Its pretty clear he thought helping was just a path to get them both killed instead of just Six rather than choosing to sacrifice her.
    I know Six isn't a "good" character, but just damn. Heartless shit.

    The theory about Six being the woman's daughter reminds of a similar theory for Portal 2. It's fairly popular but the idea is that Caroline, a woman whose mind was incorporated into Glados, is actually Chell's mother. The theory has a lot of evidence and just instinctively feels right, but I ultimately think that the story is more interesting if Chell and Glados are unrelated. It also feels like a red herring.
    But god, I hate it when creators get so snide about different interpretations of their work. (And when they make fun of fans for trying to interpret their work at all.) I also fully believe that an artist can be wrong about the meaning of their work. I'd recommend checking out what Ray Bradbury has to say about the meaning of Fahrenheit 451.

    Honestly, Mono never intentionally let Six down, in 2 of those situations, he really can't do anything to save her not because he didn't want to, but because he *can't* The first time he "abandoned" her when the building collapsed, Mono probably didnt even notice Six stumbling and falling behind him, and the second one with the Thin Man, it's actually heavily hinted that the Thin Man caused some serious headache to Mono, which is why he was clutching his head, not only was he scared, he was in pain, even if that's not the case, what was he supposed to do anyway? Mono saved Six way more times than him "abandoning" Six unintentionally. He went out of his way to save and free Six from the Hunter, he went through a whole school full of psychotic porcelain children and a disturbing teacher just to save her, he went throught half the city, possibly got his ribcage broken, defeated a powerful monster, solved some trippy puzzles inside the Tower, just to save her.
    Not saying it's wrong for Six to feel betrayed by those moments, she's just a kid after all and kids misunderstand stuff most of the time. Six betraying Mono is understandable especially for a terrified 9 year old kid in an unforgiving world, but definitely NOT justifiable, she's still an asshole for doing that lol, she had an intent to, not just abandon, but to *kill* this boy that helped her countless times.

Living in regrets not saving Six to stop himself from becoming like what he is, always looping maybe in one of those fantasies his past self would actually save Six instead of being a coward. Living in regret and never accepted the truth made who he is... Thin Man. Though I don't know what his power suppose to mean.

    Thank you for your take on the "Six is the Lady's daughter" theory. My eyebrows went waaayyyy up when I saw the designer's comment about "how could anyone interpret this antagonistic relationship as indicative of a mother and daughter???" It's so self-evidently out-of-touch that it almost reads like a parody of itself. Like, obviously he had a good mother, and that's great, I'm genuinely glad for him, but to act like even the *possibility* of an abusive mother is preposterous is just... a weird take? The mother-daughter relationship (mother-child in general, of course, I just feel like the way nurturing, caring qualities are stereotyped as "feminine" adds an extra layer of pressure to the responsibility felt between mothers and daughters, specifically) is built up as something almost sacred in popular culture, and for the many of us who *don't* have positive relationships with our mothers, that can be an extremely alienating and isolating thing. Like, thinking back on all the Mother's Days where you see all of the cards and flowers and commercials build up the concept of Mom™ as a sainted figure, and feeling resentful and strange because that's not how your mother feels, but then again, if everyone *else* is saying their mothers are Good, maybe yours is too, and you're just a Bad Child?
    I actually love the "Six is the Lady's daughter" theory even *more* for the implications of parallels between real-world abusive parent relationships. The way Six violently defeats the Lady, absorbs her power, and becomes a nightmarish entity in her own right is really powerful imagery that makes me think of cycles of abuse. When your parent hurts you, it can be comforting in a dark way to imagine repaying them with all that hurt, but then you have to ask yourself, by feeding that hatred, are you just hurting yourself, too? Can you really say you're free if you're now bound by those same hateful, hurtful feelings that drove your parent's actions? It's not a clean, pretty question, and there's no clean, pretty answer, which makes it work so well for a game as grimy and visceral as Little Nightmares.
    I don't mean to be harsh on the designer. It was a weird response to a fan theory, and my deeply personal feelings about the theory are definitely coloring my reaction to it, but obviously the game is still a beautifully grim creation that's ripe for discussion.
    Anyway, great video!

  • @urhexgirl
    @urhexgirl 5 місяців тому +3

    I interpret the mirror thing differently, not a continuity error but a deliberate decision. Body dysmorphia is a very strange thing to experience, it really warps your perception of yourself, I think the lady can look at her reflection but only when she can control the situation, hence why all the mirrors are cracked, if she can distort her reflection then she isn’t truly seeing it, and so when she’s looking at herself in the full length mirror, it’s an intentionally private moment, in darkness, where she assumes she is alone, and therefore can take a moment to face her reflection and dwell at her own appearance, she looks at herself with a mournful gaze, as if she is sad that her beauty is long gone, and whether it is truly gone and she has aged, or it’s something she’s seeing, a dysmorphia that contorts her perception of herself so that all she sees is what she believes as ugly. So when Six uses the mirror to fight her off, my interpretation is that it’s the lack of control, being made to view her reflection unwarrantedly, not being able to pose herself in a way that makes her feel is more flattering, not being able to control the angle, the expression on her face, and therefore, the image she sees, an image already misshapen and distorted by her dysmorphia, being all the more worse to look at as that tiny ounce of control she has over her appearance is being taken away, and used against her, her ultimate weakness becoming her end.

    I find it really cool how the entirety of Little Nightmares II is a loop. Mono becomes the Thin Man (?) because Six drops him and he lives in isolation in the TV realm and developed warped powers/strengthened it, Six drops Mono because she recognises Mono as the Thin Man ( who captured her ) and drops him not realising it reset the loop.
    Once Mono becomes the Thin Man, he uses the TV realm to "go back in time" to capture Six, to ensure that the events of Little Nightmares II happens and he basically causes himself to turn into the Thin Man. The TV realm probably warps time in a weird way to let the Thin Man interact with his past self.
    Not sure how Thin Man knew about Six's weaknesses/vulnerabilities (?), maybe it's part of how the loop works, Mono realises Six's weakness when fighting her larger/monster form, and Thin Man uses that to contain her in the TV realm in the future. (?)
    TLDR: Mono and Six are both victims to the Thin Man ( future Mono ) , and Thin Man forces the loop to reset ( ensuring his own existence ) by controlling what happens to Six and Mono.
