  • Since the day I got my first 3D printer, I always wanted to build such a machine by myself. As my first step I constructed the BraunsBot 1.0.
    Working area: 380x380mm
    Average speed: 70mm/s
    Software:
    Inkscape 0.91 with the plugin GCodeTools V1.7 to generate the GCode
    Universal-GCode-Sender V1.0.9 to send the GCode to the plotter
    GRBL 0.9 as plotter firmware
    All white parts are 3D printed with an Ultimaker Original +.
    Special thanks go to igus GmbH for supporting me with their great linear guides and bearings.

    My cnc pen plotter is going on the wrong side. When it draws the picture, it is not in this direction, but it is moving to the left side. how to fix it? Is it a software problem?

    I'd like to see a more indepth video in how you made this plotter. Is there any documentation available for the machine? I am currently in the process of building a CoreXY plotter that can also carry a laser but there is a lot going wrong with this machine and I'd love to see what you did. Also, how did you get IGUS to sponsor you?

    Really cool stuff! What mechanism did you use for the center pencil to go up and down? I'm looking to do something similar but more like an SMD placing machine.

    • @leonbrauns
      @leonbrauns  7 років тому

      I used a gear on the stepper motor with a rack on the pen. However for a SMD placing machine you rather want to use a vacuum pen to pick up the parts.

    Great work! Looks professional. The hardware for driving the motors is a Arduino with a CNC Hat? Which 3D Printer did you use to print the mechanic-components ?

    • @leonbrauns
      @leonbrauns  8 років тому

      Yes, it ist driven by an Arduino with a Shield. I used the Ultimaker Original + for all 3D printed parts.

    You're using quite expensive linear guides. Looking back at this build, I think this is maybe what inspired me to build my own pen plotter back in the days.. It has evolved to the 'LotusXY' pen plotter now. If you look on instagram you can see the machine working. I'm currently building a second pen plotter. Very nice to see your attempt again. My approach was completely different though, but I think we both use gcode.

    Hallo! Can I ask for a download link for:
    1) The GRBL library version you use (Mine seems to work but only "sometimes")
    2) The Universal Gcode Sender you use (mine blocks often)
    3) The Inkscape version you use (Mine generates G-codes that does not run)
    4) The Gcode plugin for Inkscape you use to translate your drownings to Gcode (As I said mine produces useless codes)
    I've beel able to drow suxcessfully a circle with the "sample gcode" downloaded form Wikipedia. So my electronic is ok, my stepper motors are ok, maybe the GRBL sketch also, but the gcode sender NOT (often bloks also with the wikipedia simple code but not always! sometimes works!) and My Inkscape version with my "choosed" plugin doesn't work at all with CNC shield and GRBL. (the produced g-codes never runs)
    I'm starting to hate those 1000 versions of each software component of the chain. Could you save me sharing your "magic combination" ? Thank you Bro! :-)
    Than, Nice work your plotter is awesome!

    • @leonbrauns
      @leonbrauns  7 років тому +1

      I just updated the description with all the software versions I used.
      Please check that you have the latest version of Java installed, this might be the reason for your problems with the UniversalGCodeSender.
      I hope that this will help you to let your CNC work properly, please let me know ;).

    So two months ago I was asking you how to do this.
    I created my own CNC. I was wondering what grbl settings were you running and what is the font you were using in the beginning of the video.

    • @leonbrauns
      @leonbrauns  7 років тому +1

      Congratulations on your own CNC! Most of the GRBL settings are defined by your own machine and therefore can not be copied from another one. You have to find the values that work for you.
      I think I used the software F-Engrave for the text in the beginning, but I do not know the exact font name.

    • @leonbrauns
      @leonbrauns  7 років тому +1

      The value of the seek rate is not that important, as it is mostly only used once in the beginning of every job. Just take a value that works ;).
      For the perfect feed rate you want to find the highest speed at which the plotter does not make any mistakes (pen is scraping instead of drawing, motors lose steps...). This mainly depends on the mechanics of the CNC, so you have to experiment to find your ideal value.
      Good luck ;)

    • @mahmouddiab5187
      @mahmouddiab5187 7 років тому

      what about the acceleration?

    • @leonbrauns
      @leonbrauns  7 років тому +1

      Well, acceleration also depends heavily on the mechanics and particularly the weight of the moving axis. With a very light setup you could go with high accelerations (>3000mm/s).
      However a acceleration of 500-1000mm/s² should work fine for your type of plotter, especially when you do not have any crazy high feed rates,

    Hi ! I have to say I am absolutely impressed by what you have done ! It is amazing :) I am currently at the beginning of my last year in High School in France and we have to build a project in group. So I thought I would do an XY Plotter. I decided to look on UA-cam what people has done yet and I saw your video. When I saw something as perfect as your machine is, I thought I could ask you some questions about it. I am not asking you to build my project, just to give me some advices. Normally, the programming part is not a problem, as I am quite good at it, but just a question. When you draw the ship, is it from a color picture that is converted thanks to a program, or is it already a pure black and white picture ? But this is not where the problem is, here's the thing, there are so many possibilities to build this thing that I don't know what to choose, like wich motors should I get to have a nice speed and a decant torque. I also saw that you are using an Arduino to control it, just like I would like to do it ! But what motor shield do you use ? Have you built one ? Last question for today, how do you give the speed of the motors to the rails ? I was thinking, I could do it with a pulley and a rope. Is that what you have done ? I can't really see on your video and I would really like to know ! Anyway, I don't know if you will answer, but I would love to have more details about BraunsBot. I am not trying to copy it, just to build a similar device. Of course, you'll be mentioned in the project. Maybe speaking in the comment section is not the best idea, could I get your e-mail, or something like this to talk to you in private.
    I hope you'll read this and you'll be able to help us in our project !
    Sorry for my bad english... I am french, that's why.

    Hi I liked your design very much.. I wanted to ask one question.. which is the best y axis design using belt drive

    • @leonbrauns
      @leonbrauns  8 років тому

      There are several possible designs for both, x- and y-axis. All have their positive and negative sides. Therefore I sadly can not tell you how the best design looks like.

    • @ashithcalicut
      @ashithcalicut 8 років тому

      Is there Torque problem when we connect belt only on one side?

    • @leonbrauns
      @leonbrauns  8 років тому +1

      Depends on the size of the machine. If it is really tiny it should work, but I do not recommend it as the carriages will most likely jam.
