  • The Adler steam locomotive (1835) drawn by a 1980's Roland DXY-1150 pen plotter, a rather hectic looking and sounding fellow.
    The Adler ("Eagle") was a German steam locomotive built to order in 1835 by the British railway pioneers George and Robert Stephenson at a cost of 1750 pounds sterling. It was delivered to the Bavarian Ludwigsbahn (Bayerische Ludwigsbahn) which ran 7.45 kilometre long between Nuremberg and Fürth. After running successfully for over twenty years the locomotive was scrapped in 1857.
    The Roland DXY-1150 pen plotter is a popular computer printing device from the 1980's for printing vector graphics. It prints by moving a pen across the surface of a piece of paper, much like a human hand does. This means it is restricted to line art. To be able to draw all sorts of shapes the pen needs to be able to move across the paper on an X and Y axis. The Roland line of pen plotters have a specific design where the paper is fixed and the pen moves along both the X and Y axis in all directions. This is different from the HP line of plotters where the pen only moves along one axis and the paper along the other. The drawing pen is mounted on a carriage that moves back and forth. These smaller "home-use" plotters were popular for desktop business graphics and in engineering laboratories for technical drawings. Starting from the mid-1990's pen plotters were gradually replaced by high-resolution inkjet and laser printers. Surviving pen plotters have often been converted to venyl sign cutters.

    Pen plotters in those days were beloved because of the fine continuous lines they could draw and were expecially popular for presentation graphics, as they could do color drawings with their 6 to 8 color pens. Moreover the pens could draw on transparency film for beamer presentations. No dot matrix could match that.

    Regular maintenance is normal for any moving machine. I have been using my different pen plotters for more than 25 years now and the six I own never suffered any breakdown. Yes, they are not fast to modern standards, but back then in the 1980s they could amaze people by their drawing capabilities and speed. Talking about speed, maybe you should check out another video I recently posted of a IBM 6182 pen plotter that is capable of 6G pen acceleration. It is truly fast, and also from the 1980's.

      Sorry, I wasn't notified you asked a question. Actually, the sequence on display here is quite intentional. To keep it interesting to watch I changed the order of the lines so it offers some more spectacle. It can be quite dull to watch if it keeps drawing in one corner for a long time to fill all the details.

    ¿Is it to save time?

  • @Wepouaout
    @Wepouaout  13 років тому

    @sexntuna
    Yes, I think you are right, maybe it would. Right now it actually follows the original order in which the lines were added to the technical drawing by a human hand. The order can be optimized for drawing speed, but it would make the whole process watching this less interesting as it would stick to one point or a set of details for a longer period of time. Now it first takes shape and the details come in the end. Much better to look at.

  • @Wepouaout
    @Wepouaout  11 років тому

    The hardware is basically the same in terms of size, speed and accuracy. The difference lies in the fact that the 1300 has a fancy static paper hold (that causes the paper to stick to the drawing board on command), has a xy-coordinate display, offers more control possibilities and can replot a drawing by itself.

      +JOSEPH WODARCZYK It drew nice and clean lines back when dot matrix printers had a DPI of ~72. There were also daisy wheel printers that worked a bit like a type writer except the characters were all on a little wheel that would spin and punch the characters. This gave you very nice high resolution characters as long as you only ever needed that particular size and font.

      They are no longer available in shops, but an online shopping site like eBay has a whole section on pen-plotters where various types are on offer. If you search the site for 'pen plotter' you will get there. If shipment of such items is a problem, or too expensive, you could also try placing a local ad or using a local market place website to find one.

    • @ommadammo
      @ommadammo 2 роки тому

      I used these for 4 years. Never had any issues with messy ink. Nothing was refilled, just replacing ink pens. Very quick and clean. The big question was - just how much were the pens costing at the time? My guess is that in 2022 money, the pens were perhaps $10 each. Came in packs of 6 or so. Each would last for perhaps 20No. A3 plots. They were only usually drawing lines, not huge blocks of color. Don't show the machine to visitors - it turns them into zombies for a few minutes :-)

      +Alexandru Dumbrava That's how the vectors are calculated. Unlike a regular inkjet printer the pixels are put on paper left to right, as the paper moves slowly in one direction. This is called raster printing.
      The plotter on the other hand plots points on every shape in the drawing and calculates the shortest path between consecutive points. That is why the circular wheels were drawn together in the beginning of the video.
