    The third generation Pathfinders (2005-2012) were also very good. Those were pretty much Frontiers with an enclosed rear end. And since the Frontier is a solid built vehicle, that means that the 3rd gen Pathfinder could also last for 300,000+ miles.

      Not quite accurate, reliable yes, but not quite a frontier, very different cars as far as suspension and offroad performance, imo the second gen (96 to 04) was the best, solid axle very comfy, great offroader with very little modifications

      +Machi74005 You're right... My mom bought an '05 Sentra 1.8L with 156K on it a few years ago, based on my recommendation of a Sentra as a really good car. Sometimes the hundred-thousand shows on the odometer, sometimes not. Stupid thing burns 2 quarts of oil every 200 miles, and Nissan in their infinite wisdom decided the car only needed a 2.7-quart total capacity.
      Had to top the oil off every 2-3 days until it decided it was going to oil-foul the plugs once a month, and it's been sitting here rotting in my yard undriven for the past 3 years because we don't have our own personal oil well in the backyard.
      Don't get me wrong, the car runs and drives amazingly well - once you get over the throttle lag due to the change from an actual accelerator pedal to a sensor-telling-the-ECM-to-tell-a-motor-to-open-the-throttle BS. It's comfortable, zippy, corners like a dream, but the only reason why it still sits here is because I haven't fully convinced my mother to let me have my buddy take it to auction and get rid of it.

    I had 2002 Pathfinder, it was the best vehicle I’ve ever owned. NOTHING WENT WRONG ON THAT VEHICLE in 180,000 miles. I did normal maintenance and ran synthetic oil from the day I purchased it. I even took it off road in the Ozark mountains about 10 or 12 times in very rough terrain during camping trips. I traded for a new 2012 Nissan Titan. Huge mistake. I wish I still had it.

And has much more second row room than both. Other than that in Minnesota, I'd buy another one in a heartbeat. Or a Titan. And I'm a Ford guy who works at a Ford dealer.

    I was in the car business for twenty years, I can tell you Scotty is right about saying most these small dealer/public auto auctions, can be known as a dumping ground for new car dealer trade-ins. But for car dealers, at closed auction dealer sales, there are lane after lane of vehicles coming off lease that make great late model, typically lower mileage cars. There is no doubt also at dealer sales that sometimes independent car lots, and new car dealerships dump trades at the auction because they may have a major engine, or trans problems, or a lot of times the vehicle takes too much money in repairs through their shop so they send it to the sale. If your a private individual at a dealer/public auction most likely the car will be sold under a red light (AS-IS), not a green light (chance to road test the car for most problems typically $500 or more and arbitrate it), I would recommend if your state has a safety/emissions program, don't but the car with a short inspection sticker coming due in a month, or few, that way with a valid sticker for awhile you have time to sell the car and it's more desirable than with an expired sticker. Or buy the car with a short/no sticker, but bid conservatively figuring the worst.

    I have a 2002 nissan frontier with 3.3L V6. Almost 200k miles and still drive strong. Its also easy to change the shocks because the front has torsion bar at the front and leaf spring at the back. It still has an old school distributor, throttle cable, SOHC engine and underpowered but reliable engine.

    So when I got my license my grandfather gave me his 2001 Pathfinder I loved it never had any problems with it was cool bronze tanish color and it the ability to go in into four wheel drive if I need it to but it was was caught in small land slide with me in to by the way and it end up in ditch leaning against my neighbors house (I will save y'all the scary details) it was pretty tough and because of the four wheel drive I was able to get it out of the ditch and back in my driveway I not unscathed though two windows were shattered and the driver side door was bent up to the point I couldn't close it and the window wouldn't roll up and the front bumper had basically been ripped off although for the most part it popped back in but anyways my dad didn't really want to waste money repairing because he sure what may have happened on the mechanical side of things so we have it to an old family friend of our who had some really hard luck and was essentially fighting his way out homelessness he need something that could get him to work and back so we have to him because he was a mechanic and if there were problems with it he could fix it so my dad went car shopping and he found a used 2007 Pathfinder for a good deal now I like it but I have noticed I've had send to the shop more often then the other I haven't in a while but for the first couple of months it had sensor problems and AC problems heck at one point one of the engine sensors malfunctioned and cut my engine off right while was driving but it better now however I really do miss that old Pathfinder

    When it comes to scan tools: I purchased an OBD-II to USB cable which came with included OBD software for $25. There are tons of free and paid software out there that are compatible with the cheap cable, and if you pair that with an old unused laptop, you have yourself a machine that can do drive-cycle recording to catch those intermittent faults (or quarter-mile drags, if you prefer). I have an old Toshiba Satellite running Windows '95 that does the job just as well as my i5 laptop on Windows 7 does. It's a great way to re-purpose obsolete technology, because you don't need an expensive computer rig to read OBD data.
    E-85 in CT is about $2 a gallon cheaper than regular blended gas. None of the cars in the family run on it. But that's ok because what I'm saving in a car payment and higher insurance coverage more than makes up for the difference in fuel prices. LOL

    I love my 2004 Pathfinder LE Platinum Edition. Just wish my A/C worked (Florida). The VQ V6 is real solid. When they changed body style in 2005 I heard things started going wrong. I think that’s true with a lot of cars when they initially redesign a car at first.

    I agree with most the stuff you say besides the auctions ,fact is most cars are from the auctions at some point that's where the stealerships get their inventory . Some of our cars probably been at a auction 5 times before we bought it doesn't mean it's a bad car.

    I have a 98 Volvo S90, 2003 C70 and had a 2007 S40. Never had any trouble with my Volvo’s. My S40 had 269,000 miles and never an issue. It was rear ended by an 18 wheeler which is why I no longer own it. Believe it or not it still drove (with issues) for another 8 months after the wreck.

    i myself was a mechanic for 32 years(retired in 2008 due to health issues) the only thing i did not like with nissans is as the vehicles got older you would get wear in the rack & pinion. you you would start getting some vertical movement in the rack which would cause toe wear in the alignment because you could never get the toe set correctly.
    in extreme cases the rack & pinion could also leak.

  • @ajbutch123
    @ajbutch123 4 роки тому +1

    Hell yes, the old pathfinders are pretty much bullet proof if you keep on the rust prevention. My first pathfinder rusted out bad enough that I was afraid to drive it at 285,000. I picked up one with a seized engine due to user neglect, dropped mine in, and have been driving it for a couple years. I'm up to 300k on the powertrain now, and I'm sure Ill get another 50k trouble free miles out of it, if not more.
    Of course, I have kept up with oil changes, replaced valve cover gaskets once, and changed the timing belt twice, but I don't consider those to be 'problems' or 'trouble', just something you have to do if you own an older vehicle.

  • @andrewjarvis5814
    @andrewjarvis5814 5 років тому

    We got a 98 nissan pathfinder with 250k, i think they were also alot more reliable because the older ones have a low powered engine, so not much to burn out when you got the horesepower of a 4cyl.
    Im loving my current pathfinder, 2012, started making them in 2005, and the frontier is the same mechanically, so with that long of a run they seem like very good vehicles.

    I owned an 01 3.5 V6 LE from 2005 until spring of 2018. It was a great running truck...virtually no trouble. I had the front strut tower rust recall "performed" in 2012. However, it still developed catastrophic front strut Tower corrosion buy 2018. This was despite it always been garaged, with underbody washes during the winter, and their so-called recall repair. Their unibody design is deplorable and I would not recommend the R50 Pathfinder to anyone. Mechanically, however, it was amazing. I just wish the body and frame lasted as long as my current 91 Honda Accord.
