    The flat rear foot is something that has gone out of the window in modern fencing in favour of a rolling rear foot. Think I'm kidding? Watch any A grade or top level club fencer in a bout and the rear foot rolls. Even modern fencing shoes like the Nike Ballestra and the Adidas Darts have reinforcement in that inner area which goes to show just how entrenched this is now. It's just the way techniques evolve through trial and error and real world biomechanics. Even McCahey is guilty of this. Watch how he naturally goes into a rear foot roll yet consciously notices his lapse in technique and recovers it. In a bout the roll is just instinctive, natural biomechanics and even those that advocate a flat rear foot almost never apply it consistently in practice.
