Heat Forming Sintra (aka PVC Foamboard)

  • *Warning!* PVC Foamboard emits fumes as it heats which are a bit stinky and probably not that great for your health. Plus use proper ventilation (fans, windows/door open) and feel free to use a respirator to be on the safe side.
    In this video we share with you our learning experience on how to heat form foamboard with your oven, instead of a heat gun.
    Two very important things we learned:
    1- Thin pvc foamboard will warp and shrink a LOT! For this method I would recommend using 2mm or thicker.
    2- Even thicker foamboard will shrink as it heats. The foamboard is puffed up with air, so it makes sense that as it heats, the bubbles pop and you are left with a smaller (and slightly thinner) piece of plastic. If you are using this method to heat and shape the Sintra I would use a piece a bit larger than the final piece you want, then once it is shaped properly, cut it to the correct size.
    We are not experts at this but enjoy sharing our experiences, fails and successes, so others may learn too!

    Ok about to experiment with stuff today.

    You need to use two pieces for forming the buck and mold.

    how good is the sintra for making a smooth surface via sanding? and does it hold acrylic paint well?

    • @Cosplay4usall
      @Cosplay4usall  10 років тому

      It is excellent for making a smooth surface. You can layer it right on top of craft foam too, to give it a crisper line. It sands very easily and holds acrylic paint just fine. I would recommend giving it a light sanding with very fine sandpaper prior to painting, and use paints specifically for use with plastics (Rustoleum has a line of rattle cans for plastic).

    Where a respirator expanded pvc board “Sintra” causes toxic fumes to rise in the air when heated!!!! Nice work though regardless :)

    Pvc does release lots of toxic even just by cutting. Put on a mask next time if u gonna bake it.

    Why is it that it seems to be that sentra is only used for body armor! What ELSE is it good for?

    at 1/8" thick, can pre-cut pieces be made into the 2 halves of a 'spacer' for inside a rifle scope ring? A scope that is 3/4" diameter can easily get 1" scope rings (the standard), so you need 2 X 1/8" spacers that just fit inside the 1" rings to fill the 1/8" gap for each half of the rings. I figure a small heat gun or even a toaster oven on very low would warm up the SINTRA.

      Sorry dude. I have no idea what you're talking about lol. I can answer the last part! A small heat gun or a toaster oven will indeed warm up the SINTRA.

    Hi
    I have a question i will be using one of these boards i work but with velcro pictures on it. basically it is a sign display i will be setting it down on a dishwasher self on the outside. and it gets warm up there. should i be worry about it ? or should i fine a different place to put it ?

    • @Cosplay4usall
      @Cosplay4usall  5 років тому

      I'm not sure I understand your question, but I wouldn't heat up anything that has velcro strips on it.

    I was wondering. after you make your costumes do you pad the insides so they can stay firmly on your body as you walk around?

    • @Cosplay4usall
      @Cosplay4usall  10 років тому

      So far, all of our costumes have been like our Zer0 cosplay - which is what we are making the armor for in the above video- form fitting, tight to the body. If you were doing armor that was supposed to make you look bigger, you could definitely attach foam to the back of the pvc foamboard to bulk it out a bit :)

    I understand why you used an oven but I don't see why you can't just use a heat gun for the job. It seems like it would be easier just not as fast.

    • @Cosplay4usall

      You certainly can use a heat gun and get similar results. We have always used a heat gun on all our previous armor. However, we have found, on larger pieces, that it is difficult to heat it all evenly and have had issues with the edges curling. Using the oven allowed us to uniformly apply the heat to the whole piece at once, rather like a vacuum form machine, without the vacuum!

      +Mike Mason wouldn't the chemicals leech into the kettle? I wouldn't drink from that again

    • @IconicProps
      @IconicProps 8 років тому

      +vicx05 no more toxic than the smell. fresh 100 percent to lungs versus the possibility of some in bowl. I've boiled many times. it's far more consistent heat.

    • @vicx05
      @vicx05 8 років тому

      +Mike Mason what makes you think you'd only get "some" in the bowl/kettle? The fumes can be ventilated out, but the boiled chemicals could be a lot harder to clean, if at all.

    • @IconicProps
      @IconicProps 8 років тому

      +vicx05 because Teflon is a non porous surface and you can pour gasoline on it and once cleaned is unable.to be detected and both are petroleum byproducts. More importantly a pot is 2.99 at big lots. That I know of no one is forcing you to eat out of a pit again.

    • @Cosplay4usall
      @Cosplay4usall  9 років тому

      wbslnger2004 We buy sheets of it from a local plastic manufacturer in Indianapolis. If you Google search PVC Foam board you can find many sites to buy from (make sure to include PVC in your search!).

    Is this safe to heat in your oven?

    • @Cosplay4usall

      Tom Fowler under certain circumstances. Small amounts, low temps, and most important of all VERY well ventilated area! Windows open, fan on, etc.

    Is that the same as styrene?

    • @Cosplay4usall
      @Cosplay4usall  9 років тому

      pmp2559 Nope. PVC Foamboard has air injected in to the pvc. Two different kinds of plastics, although they appear similar.

      Styrofoam has a Tg of ~90C - which is about 25C lower than PVC. You ought to be able to heat form styro board at even lower heat than PVC. In fact it cuts nicely with a hot wire slicer. Be careful with styro, many organic solvent-based coatings/glues with dissolve it.
