This isn't really sexist at all. Back when this advert was made, most cars did not have power steering, and hydraulic anti-lock brakes were also somewhat new and rare in cars. This is to say nothing of the total lack back then of all-wheel drive, limited-slip differentials, and other mechanisms to maintain traction on wet or snowy roads. Controlling (what were back then) much heavier vehicles on the road with those older systems and bad weather conditions took significant muscles and skill, and tires are the best way to make up for that lack of skill. Technology has changed cars, but the tires you have on still make a huge difference in safety.

    • @johnwilburn
      @johnwilburn 2 роки тому +2

50/50 on the power steering, ABS didn’t exist, all wheel drive was exotic, but limited slip differentials were alive and well everywhere. You’d be surprised… the cars weren’t heavier then. They may look it, but there is so much over-engineered junk packed into cars today, they weigh more for their size than cars of 50 years ago.

During my years of driving in Miami I have been hit from behind six times and been totalled twice as a reult. Five were non American woman drivers and one was a male chinese tourist yelling out his window at the car beside him. He told the cops his foot hit the gas by mistake. My favorite was the young Brazillian girl who fender bended me and seemed unconcerend as she told me " our cars, they just go kiss kiss"

I remember being in the car when my mom was driving. We came to a controlled intersection. She turned right on red legally. As we were turning in the intersection, a woman turning left from the other side hit our door. Then she said, "You hit me, I didn't hit you!" To which I replied, "Oh, that's right. Our car drives sideways!" She hit our left side passenger door. Yep, we drove into her. Uh huh. Well, they might have them today, but back then I had never seen a car that could go sideways. We struck the front bumper with our side door is what she was trying to say. Nothing against female drivers but that woman wasn't all there in the head.

As a woman I kinda agree. The way he says, "When a woman's at the wheel" is so sexist at first, but then the ad plays on her fears and general uselessness at changing a tyre on her own. Even if every woman could, doing so on the side of the road late at night just makes all the opportunistic rapists driving past wanna pull up and say, "Need help?"

I don't doubt that a woman could manage on their own, but if I had the choice, I damn sure wouldn't want my wife or mom stranded on the side of a road- at night- in the early 70's- without a phone.

      @@FemaleBehemothNo9 Are you mentally challenged?
50% difference in upper body strength means, that the woman would have to be a professional fighter to really stand a chance against an avrage man.
And even then it would still depend on her luck, there was a female wresling champ who (a few years ago) started insulting some random dude.
She said she could beat his ass, and so, he accepted the challange, which, I can understand, but I think it's not cool of him.
And he, and avrage Joe, beat her by a mile, it was not even a real fight, he had better reach, was faster and stronger.
It was honestly painful to watch, so yeah, I think people should be careful.

Not sexist at all. The ad condoned safety in general, it placed the values that men and children and society had over women, the mother or wife was a special person of the family unit, and Polyglas tires allowed her to change lanes safer and stop faster. Who wants their mother driving in rainy weather or bumpy roads with a terrible tire, that may cause her to be involved in an accident. Not sexist at all in my opinion, just promoted safety

    • @diver362

I said that the mother or wife was a special part of the family unit. Men, children and the rest of society in general valued the role of the mother. If you have ever seen "Happy Days" or "Leave it To Beaver" and similar titles, one can relate the social values surrounding the rise of the nuclear family in the 50s-60s in relation to the importance of women. The mothers in those shows were always seen as an important aid to child rearing, and not to mention they played an important role in keeping the family together. The majority had 24/7 jobs being stay at home moms, along side any career that some may have chosen to part take. So yeah, women and mothers were and are special people which is is why they needed to have Polyglas tires.

I almost got run over by a man that was gabbing on his phone and not paying attention. He wasn't using a hands free device. It was terrifying.

Honestly, women weren't as independent back then. They were expected to be weak and confused, and if they weren't that way naturally, they usually acted that way. The ad is just a piece of history. :P

@J88Wolf to me the issue seems more about safety. if they showed her rolling over nails, then broken glass, then land mines, maybe. But they show her having to stop short, entering 'scary" places like airports, etc.

This "vintage" tire commercial evokes early ’90s when I was a college student and drove over a LARGE nail on a lightly-traveled road. Heard a pop, drove the ½ mile back home. My FATHER DECIDED I would be OK riding the donut spare for my 200 mi. trek and I could get a new tire the next day at a SEARS store in watch?v=aa-c6YcDcSM. I don't think it is sexist if they mean that predators could be targeting her if her tires blow. But it is sexist if they mean that she is more likely to ruin the tires.

I can't believe the comments. The concern, of course, is that if a woman is stranded it's a different story than if a man is stranded. Sorry to defend the spot, but I never thought in the terms you guys mean when viewing this spot.
