56y old lifetime cyclist. Owned more than twenty bikes in the past twenty years. , and my Steamer is one of the most enjoyable day to day rides I’ve ever had. Using 37mm gravels, with the Surly Truckstop raised drops, and Brooks springer saddle. SS is all I need for most of my flat riding. Fast. Comfy. Agile. Wish it had better options for bikepacking. Planning a 500km ride this year.
@@jeremygoertz after putting many miles on the steel bike, it’s more lively than my aluminum bike with similar tires. Definitely not as jarring to ride. I’ve always liked steel frames.
Dude I love your Surlys! Awesome color. The Moony is very cool too! Happy to welcome a new fat biker. I ride an Ice cream truck in Oslo. Live it! Subscribed.
On my second streamer, just can’t shake it! Road on in LA for a decade, but now in Minnesota the smaller/rebuilt/SS Roller is crushing it in snow and gravel. Simple, clean, capable. Congrats! Welcome to the family?
Jeremy these are great. I would enjoy a video on setting up a bike for actual rides, must have tools and how to do inflation, good water setups for drinking, etc. Thank you.
I was pretty stoked! The guy had a black one too for $50 less but of course I had to get this one 👍 I think he owned a bike shop and was shutting it down. He had 5 nice fixed gear frames all size xl for sale.
Thank you! Yeah I’ve been looking for a long time too and man, every other bike comes up 10 times but no steamrollers. Couldn’t believe I was able to get this one and that the guy would drive it from Edmonton to Calgary for me. Crazy.
I gave in and ordered a new steamroller frameset (black). Should be here shortly, looking forward to the build and having a wider tire FG option for winter.
I really like the color on that frame. the chainring should be in front of the crank though, i have seen those bend like an aluminum can when installed that way. if the chainline is off that much still look into spacers or a different length of bb spindle. just use a bigger cog if you want an easier ratio.
I don't understand. That looks like a tripe chainring crank, and he's running his chainring where the middle ring would sit in the standard triple setup. Why would it be at risk for bending?
This makes me want to dig out my old Diamondback Topango and build it out for some Strathmore gravel grinding old school style. The vintage Brahma bars on it are cool, but throwing a set of Jones bars on it would be perfect.
Right on! Right now I’m actually waiting for a guy to meet me with a surly moonlander. I am stoked to have a fattie for the winter. We should do some fat rides this winter! 👍
There used to be a couple in there 50s I’d guess who would always ride to Starbucks in the winter. Haven’t seen them for a few years. There’s also a few folks I’ve seen that ride at eagle lake when the ice is thick. That would be fun.
Great video man! Loved it. Quick question. I’m a beginner when it comes to bike mechanic work. Beginner meaning never even changed a tired. Do you think it’s realistic for me to build up a fixed gear from a frame set? Granted I take the time to learn an invest in all the tools. I guess my question is, is it a good project to learn on with such a big learning curve? It’s a bit intimidating. Thanks!!
Thank you! For sure. A fixie or even a single speed is a great place to begin. Some of the most frustrating parts of working on bikes (at least used bikes I work on) is getting different shifters and deraileirs to work together. Or find parts for them. Take out the shifty bits and you eliminate a lot of the hard stuff. I’d say go for it! It will be a blast and you’ll learn a lot 👍
I have tried the wide flat bars on my Karate Monkey and I wasn’t a fan. I actually ended up cutting them down and found them more comfortable a little narrower. I wanted to like it but the whole wide bars don’t jive with me for some reason. Which is strange because I’m bigger than the average man. 🤷♂️
@@jeremygoertz When you say wide, how wide do you mean? Because I meant more like 660-700mm, which is a bit narrower than a lot of people would think since "wide bars" are known to be used for MTB and downhill. In the fg scene when we say wide bars, it could be anything from around 600-800mm
Yeah I’mm thinking the super wide end of the spectrum. I had some 780s on my KM and rode them for several months. For me they were just too much. I chopped them to 660 and like them so much more now. I actually have a vintage Nitto bar that is fairly narrow that I might put on this. It would be a super clean look.
@@jeremygoertz Ah I see. Yeah I agree! 780 is pretty damn wide haha I'm from ny and I like my 660mm bars just fine. Very rarely they're a bit too wide. I tried 710s once and wasn't a huge fan. But if you haven't tried risers on a fixed gear, I'd definitely at least see how it feels if I were you.
Hello. Thanks for the video. Could you tell me what is the name of "wrench" which you use to nuts/bolts - I thinks it is very handy. This chainring is a normal or narrow-wide?
Thank you! I’ll try and see what I can do. I think I want to focus on bike content here more than anything else but I’ll have to see how my knees handle the fixie for more riding this summer 😆👍

Some minor bruises, mainly to my ego. Tore my brand new camo grip tape I spent 20 minutes carefully applying. Lol.
Love it! They make some bloody good frames but they're out of my price range. I wanted a 1x1 for years but could never afford it. When I'd finally scraped together enough cash for the frame and some decent components, I got in touch with my nearest dealer, only for them to tell me that Surly had discontinued it! I ended up buying a Kona Unit which is a good bike, but it's just not a Surly. I guess I'll have to keep my eyes on ebay.
Yeah those 1X1s are sweet. I saw one locally for $350 this summer and was tempted. Those Kona Units are great bikes. I was going between that and my karate monkey. The only reason I went with my KM is because I used to own a KM and had such great memories of it.

I found a surly steamroller at a yard sale for $20. It’s a complete bicycle but I am bicycle illiterate. It is black. It’s missing the stickers, but the surly crown is still on the front. Anyone want to buy a bike? Taking offers….

Definitely get a Izumi super toughness in there. That black and gold chain goes with any frame and can take a real hammering.
