Hi Jonathan speaking as a Filipino it is not that they do not want the delicious rice cake. But rather, the vendor gave you the tawas or local deodorant because he likes you and he is not expecting in return. If he took the rice cake it would meant that he wants you to reciprocate his kindness, which is not the case. To be honest the locals, aside from being genuinely hospitable and welcoming, are treating you kindly because of the respect and kindness you are showing them.
You can walk 20 blocks in the USA and might get one or two hellos. You can’t make it 20 feet there without getting 15 or 20 hello’s and that’s awesome.
Tawas or Alum is a natural deodorant for Southeast Asians. I have been using it since I was a kid and it works and has no side effects. Kanunay means "always" in the Cebuano language. Amping kanunay - take care always. The Visayas and Mindanao regions share the same language except for the Islamic language. Ilonggo or Hiligaynon is another language spoken in the Visayas and parts of Mindanao. Waray and Karay-a are another Visayan languages spoken in Visayas area.
I would like to thank you for truly showing how kind and friendly Filipinos are and how safe the country is. You are perfectly right in depicting that safety is subjective and that every country has places that are sketchy and unsafe. That being said, The Philippines is generally safe. Filipinos are so much welcoming to all tourists and I find it so disrespectful seeing other vloggers doing clickbait and spreading untruth about a specific place in the country just to gain views. In your case, you are very truthful and so sensitive with those issues. Again I truly am grateful to you for your honest and entertaining videos. I pray you have a wonderful stay and adventure here in The Philippines. God bless. 😊😊😊
My Filipino heart idol Mr. "J". Getting acclimated deeper into a Filipino culture. My amazing brothers & sister in Tondo showed "J" the friendliness, hospitality and real happiness in life. Watching you from SF CA 🇺🇲. 🫶🇵🇭
The Philippines is generally safer for foreigners than locals, specially vloggers. I think those petty thieves would rather do a shout out In front of your GoPro than pick your pockets. But do not let your guard down though. 😀
I’m glad you have very good experiences in the Philippines, almost anywhere you go. Just be careful especially in big downtown areas. You are very friendly, so people return the friendliness plus you’re holding a camera and they know you are blogging and a lot of people want to be seen. Thank you for promoting the Philippines. 😊
Tbh, as a Filipino in America I also hear a lot of comments from Filipinos here about the dangers in their own country. Just was there for 2 weeks. My first time back in over 25 years and nothing bad happened. Also went to a neighborhood in quezon city and was warned by a cousin there to be careful, but I've encountered more sketchy situations in my own city of Portland, Oregon
It's because of the selective facts and myths the western media propagate to the world about the Philippines for, who knows, their own interests. Sometimes those information are allegedly even sponsored by the supporters of the communist group of the Philippines to paint a bad picture of the government when their bet loses the elections. Now that there are more independent content creators showing the raw, unfiltered, and real Philippines, people realize that Philippines is relatively safer than other western countries.
Hi Jonathan! I was just watching this vlog of yours. I’m from Los Angeles, but I’m Filipino. Having said that Filipinos are generally shy, and if you start the sentence, “Do you want this rice cake?” They will answer you, “no thank you.” Because they are shy, of course there are exceptions to the rule but majority are shy. Instead, say it this way, “this is for you.” I hope it helped understanding this culture of mine. Shout out to all Filipinos around the world!
You said some say this is a dangerous area? Are they crazy? From all the 'hi', 'hello', waves, greetings, smiles, and even short conversation you are getting it looks more a friendly neighbouhood. Even the children rush up to greet with smiles.
Right?!?! Lookout 👀you might GET A HUG or a SMILE! You better protect yourself or you might catch the local attitude-SWEET HAPPY AND FRIENDLY! Lookout now, it’s contagious!🤣🙏🏻❤️❤️❤️
Well it's actually true that it's somehow dangerous in this area, but it depends on how u bring yourself, if u will act as douchebag then it will be dangerous but as long as you talk to locals and friendly, I'm sure these locals will protect u from any harm on their area
it's true that Tondo district is a dangerous area but it was decades ago when rival gangs were in the area but today not so. but it also depends what area you go to especially at night, robbery is common even on board jeepneys.
Thank you Travel Escape Filipina sub, born & raised , living away abroad.. for your debunking the myth made by other bloggers . I salute to you. As you can see you show respect to our culture, then you encountered respectful locals. Thank you for sharing this to the world..

Lol. Tawas is actually hydrated aluminum sulfate compound which was (still is) a common anti-perspirant/minor deodorant. A lot of underarm products are moving away from aluminum containing ingredients, but it's still ok to use in this raw form as it has been for centuries. Divisoria is a great place to find wholesale discounts. It also has endless products that pick your curiosity. Not a dangerous place. It does have a few incidents of pickpockets but that is common in crowded areas anywhere, so best to keep wary while enjoying what Divisoria has to offer.
Do you know that (some) Pinoy also uses tawas to cure mouth sore (singaw). We just put a little bit amount of pulverized tawas on the affected area for it to heal fast 😄
There are times when bad people strike during times when u least expected it. Don't be complacent at all times. There are so many areas inindanao that are infested with rebels especially remote areas and mountains..but there are also peaceful places as well like Siargao,Davao,Surigao and Dumaguete,Cotabato, etc.
Hi Jonathan, Thank you for clarifying that out anywhere in the country. There's a danger. You just have to see it for yourself to know that is not and be safe always 😊

I'm all smiles watching this. Proud of the people in Divisoria being all friendly to visitors/expats/foreigners. That's good representation right there. :)
'sup jonathan. The refreshing black drink you had was called "Gula'man sa-ma'lamig" (literal: gelatin cold refreshment drink, in this case black gelatin). When you made a licorice taste feedback after you drank it, you noticed that you got blank stares, like "huh!" reaction... that's because majority of the Filipinos do not have a clue what licorice is (we are talking about the demographic that you were in at the time). So whenever you get those "clueless" stare moments, back them up with some context so you get your message and your feedback across. Keep the positive vibe! As always, mag-iingat ka palagi.
Tawas - alum. It's an astringent, and yes, it will help reduce sweating. For use after showering. Apply by wetting the rock crystal with water and sliding it against areas in the underarm.
tawas or alum can be used both powder and solid..after taking shower you just rub the solid one in your armpit..it prevents sweating because sweat and bacteria causes foul smell..
Jonathan that is good you will not get dark under-arm.. Unlike deodorant or powder... Just make sure when you apply it when during shower and it's wet and let it dry..
Sir, why don't you try to come in visit in our mountainous province. Of Benguet. Or in Baguio city we don't have beaches but our strawberry farm. Mount pulag. Mines view park
I have that “scared” feeling too just to think going to Divisoria….never been there…..nice to see you having fun interacting with my people….you’re so warm, so accommodating, so patient…..please be careful always..God be with you….
Back in the day I roam that neighborhood as soon as banks open, collect this and that mostly from those banks in there and have it deposited in a bank and go to the other side of the bridge(Jones Bridge)and to the banks too until almost cut-off time(two o’clock is closing time for deposit for the day)and continue until before the banks closes, ride public transportation to home and call it a day.
Good video's. Just found your channel and your quality of video's is up there with the best. I'm glad to see an American do these. My wife is Filipina, and I love going back there. I'm tring to talk her into going here but she says it's dangerous, but clearly it's not. I'm glad you mentioned about the title of others. Have fun .
Definitely not dangerous, it is incredible how safe it is, considering it is 100% local, that is why I dont agree with common talks that ____place is "safer" than PH, the average person that promotes ____ places never goes to places this local in their favorite countries, the "safety" they claim over Philippines comes completely from tourist zones and outskirts of those tourist areas which are still tourist areas pretty much.
4:20 he gave it for free coz u supposed to buy huge amount of that for selling also..i think small stores buy for him and packed it for 10,20,30 pesos each
You can watch The hungry Syrian wanderer and you will understand how he fell in love with our country and hopefully you can stay longer here take care always and God bless Jonathan
AMERICAN here. PHILIPPINES is very safe! There are pocket pickers there and in USA. So I keep money close here and there. However! Philippines is by far greater than USA with all the true love and kindness expressed by all there. You will find no country as good as Philippines. I traveled a lot and worked in Philippines for years. I miss it and plan to build a home there soon! You vlog very well! Perhaps we meet up and you visit my new home.
Hahaha everybody wants to be in your youtube channel.the tawas is very cheap its nice in underarm for whitening and at the same time deodorant wet it first before using by rubbing in your skin .thanks jonathan of being very nice to our locals stay safe always😄😍✌👍🙏
The white transparent rock is called ' tawas.. it's supposed to be a skin disinfectant at the same time it has a whitening property. So people use it especially in their armpits.
Although I can’t understand what you’re saying, I enjoyed the view n beauty of the places.. you’re smile is infectious; you’re a happy vlogger…. I was born in Manila but living in New York for many years… n wishing to visit visaya b4 the sun sets in on my life,,,I miss the Philippines,,

Just make sure when you apply it when during shower and it's wet and let it dry..
Sir, why don't you try to come in visit in our mountainous province. Of Benguet. Or in Baguio city we don't have beaches but our strawberry farm. Mount pulag. Mines view park
I’m planning out a big Luzon trip! First I’m going to find an apartment and then come back up to Luzon to see these places and Banau!
I have that “scared” feeling too just to think going to Divisoria….never been there…..nice to see you having fun interacting with my people….you’re so warm, so accommodating, so patient…..please be careful always..God be with you….
Thank you for radiating just positivity in your vlogs.
Have fun .
Thank you for saying that! That’s true, there aren’t too many Americans making these videos here. Thank you for watching!
Welcome to the Philippines ❤❤❤
Thank you Jhong!
Enjoy vlogging and keep safe have a nice weekend.
I love this! These are beautiful amazing people. I hope to move to that country.
Amping kanunay = Take care of yourself always.
Illongo is a dialect in Visayan islands that has a unique up and down intonation.
Oooook thank you for explaining!!
Great video. Very friendly people.
Thank you for watching!
Travel Escape Sir Jonathan next time kindly try to explore the northern part of the Philippines. thank u and God bless...
Amping Kanunay, takecare always. Kanunay, is always. From Davao City Philippines
I can agree with you. I was in manila a few months ago and felt safer there than in the US.

Watch out for pick pockets. Be vigilant. Take care and stay cool.
Hahaha everybody wants to be in your youtube channel.the tawas is very cheap its nice in underarm for whitening and at the same time deodorant wet it first before using by rubbing in your skin .thanks jonathan of being very nice to our locals stay safe always😄😍✌👍🙏
that crystal thing you just had you crush it into powder then you apply it to your armpits it prevents your armpit from sweating.
The white transparent rock is called ' tawas.. it's supposed to be a skin disinfectant at the same time it has a whitening property. So people use it especially in their armpits.
