Thank you for devoting your time and study to Bill Cristenberry’s work. The Corcoran School began a new curriculam under Roy Slade in 1969, and he was the head of the foundation year. I was his student in the second year of the program starting in the fall of 1970. Bill was an inspiration to us all. In early 1971 he showed a few of the class some of his photographs, square prints in an envelope from the photo lab. I recall he took them to a drug store for processing. He brought up working under Walker Evans guidance. My father was an architectural photographer, and taught me his skills so I understood what Bill was doing even though I didn’t get the drug store processing. I worked in formats from 35mm to 8x10 and sometime around the middle of my artistic career I totally got the drug store thing. Thank you again for this biography, and thank you Bill for your inspiration to all your students.

Thank you so much for sharing that wonderful story and for watching the video! 😊 It’s incredible to hear that you had the opportunity to learn directly from Bill Christenberry. His connection to Walker Evans and that personal touch with drugstore processing really adds another layer to the way we understand his work. I’m sure your experience as a photographer gave you such a unique perspective on what he was doing, especially with your background in formats like 35mm and 8x10! 🎞️
I’m so glad the video resonated with you. It’s stories like yours that remind me how much of an impact these artists have had on so many people.
Stay tuned for more content coming soon! And feel free to share the video with anyone you think might enjoy it or find it inspiring. 😊

@@Joel_Ulises People always say "share this video" - but I will take you up on it as there are a few students from that era I am in touch with. It was an interesting time in Wahington art. My 4 years at the Corcoran enabled me to work with and learn from almost all the artists active in DC - Gene Davis, Mary Beth Edelson, Robert Stackhouse, Roy Slade, Sam Gilliam, Mark Power, and many more. Around 1973 or so, you could go to school early and sit with Gene Davis over coffee and hear his stories and ideas. Priceless!

One shot - got it, moving on? NO. Look at all the images of the Green Warehouse. Different POV, different composition, etc. Remember "work the scene". Great video. Thanks.

I live and photograph in Alabama. I didn't realize so much of what I photograph had already been expressed and mastered by such a talented artist.

His work is truly something special, and it's amazing how his art can resonate with what you're capturing now. Your own perspective still brings something unique, so keep doing what you love! 📸

I like these videos where you give some lead-up presentation much better; they give a lead-in to the artist.

Hi! 😊 I'm really glad to hear that you enjoy the lead-up presentations. I think it's important to give some background before diving into the artist's work-it adds more context and appreciation for their journey. 🎨 Thanks for the feedback! I'll definitely keep that in mind for future videos. Stay tuned, and feel free to share with anyone who might find it interesting! 🙌
Hope you have a great day!

Thanks for the great introduction to the great photographer. I find Christenberry somewhere between Joseph Cornell's magic boxes and Faulkner's later prose. As a matter of fact, while looking at the photographs I was constantly thinking of Faulkner's novels. This may be a different place but the feel and the sense of the place is the same.

Great video Joel, as always. Your presentations allow the photographs to speak. Your commentary and the music never dominates but compliments the work presented. The viewer gets a real sense of the subject artist and the in-depth look a several individual images gives the opportunity to the viewer to do the same, as he wishes, with all of the work presented. Thanks Joel.

Hi there! 😊 Thank you so much for sharing that story-it’s amazing how special those first cameras can be. A Brownie at age 6? That must have been such a magical experience! And Virginia has so many beautiful spots. That red building on RT 6 sounds like a perfect subject for a photo-what a wonderful memory. 📸

None of these photos would rate a single like on Flickr. That's not a criticism, just a puzzle.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I understand your perspective, and it's an interesting point. Christenberry's work can indeed be puzzling when viewed through the lens of what typically gains popularity online. His photography often focuses more on deeper narratives and the subtle beauty of ordinary places, which might not always resonate with wider audiences on platforms like Flickr. But that's part of what makes his work unique, don't you think?

  • @bencompson

This is a well done and informative video. However, I don't see what you see in Christenberry's photos. I've lived in the south my whole life. I love the region. I love Christenberry's subject matter. But most of his photos don't move me. They seem mostly documentary at best. They seem to rely too much on nostalgia and sentimentalism. Composition in most of Christenberry's work seems mundane, flat and uninteresting. Maybe intentionally?
To me they do not rise to the level of (his contemporary) William Eggleston's better photos. They may be on par with Eggleston's mediocre photos, of which there are many. But that isn't saying much. Eggleston's better photos of often similar subject matter have a greater impact. They make me say 'wow' when I first see them. They go beyond simple nostalgia. But to be honest, I be hard pressed to say exactly why Eggleston works for me and Christenberry doesn't.
Its not that I dislike his work. It just doesn't inspire me . But I'm glad I learned about him here. Thanks.

Thank you so much for watching and for your thoughtful comment! 😊 I really appreciate you sharing your perspective. I completely understand that art, especially photography, can resonate differently with everyone. Christenberry's work may evoke certain emotions for some, while others, like yourself, might feel differently. It's great to hear that you love the South and appreciate the subject matter he captures! 🌳📸
I can see how you might feel that his photos lean more towards nostalgia and sentimentalism, and your comparison with Eggleston is insightful. Photography is so subjective, and I love hearing different takes on how certain images impact people. I'm glad the video gave you a chance to learn more about him, even if his work doesn't fully inspire you the way others do.
Thanks again for sharing your thoughts! I hope you have a great day, and stay tuned for more content to come. Feel free to share the video with anyone who might enjoy or benefit from it! 🙌✨
