Man, this is a kind of awkward video, he's sat on a not too comfy looking chair and looks really tiny or far away. I am always impressed with how JC has the ability to talk a topic for hours on end and stay interesting and not fumble around.
Indeed. I have followed his work for a long time now. Love everything he does. He is an absolute GENIUS. And a legend. His brain is fast. And creative.
I really wanna lay down some cups around his chair, so that when he leaks drops of passion I could use them to synthesis a motivational serum. My contribution to the world.
I like his anecdote about people not noticing that steroscopy was missing in one of his demo apps. Good to point out to those who compare VR to 3D movies - when the VR experiences can still be engaging WITHOUT stereo.
Captured video content with true depth information is something I would like to see. I still think that having individual video for each eye has an advantage because specular reflections that differ between the eyes tells our brains quite a lot about material properties. Good examples are water and oily skin.
Please Oculus, provide a MP3 version of Carmack's keynotes. Sitting for 2 hours straight to watch a video is very difficult. But I'd love to listen to it while commuting.
Ronald Tetsuo Miura www.youtube-mp3.org/ . Use that site. It is safe, don't worry. Just put the link of the video, and download the mp3. Super useful for music too.
Having watched a few 180 deg stereoscopic videos in the DK2 (for science) I can say that it is definitely viable as an extension of current storytelling like video and theater. You don't really want to turn your head more than that while passively consuming content anyway. It might not be VR but it is very immersive "presence video".
Next time, I get a client that asks me about building an AR HMD product I am going to point them at this video around the 1:19:30 mark. I totally agree with Carmack. HMD AR is still not full FOV, high enough FPS, and good ergonomics. Head mounted AR is good as a developer product, but not a consumer product.
wtf that chair looks like a miniature, at first glance at the thumbnail I thought John is gonna appear on a desk as an hologram lol, also the stage and chair kinda look like a CGI 3d, its weird.
48:48 Connected to my $2000 PC? I've almost pulled my *$7000* PC off the desk when I fell over once with the Rift... Needless to say - I got some USB and HDMI extension cables in a big hurry xD
Functional programming doesn't give you infinite memory. You're getting buffer overflows with imperative because you use fixed size arrays instead of variable size, like std::vector, doing it wrong.
1:11:30 Well this sure didn't age well... VR headsets ended up being HUUUUUUGE in the professional CAD world! And ultra high end, near strictly enterprise focused VR headset manufacturers targeting that market are still EXTREMELY prevalent almost 8 years later! Varjo in particular has built basically their entire company & products on the back on that specific business model.
so that explains why shitty as games look shitty as hell on VR. The codecs suck... Really excited for panoramic movies and entertaiment tho. It truly is the future because that could be transferd to holographics
the man, the myth, the legend

You can see how passionate this guy is. It's like this every time I see him talking. I think he could literally write a book haha.
Book?....nah...library ! :)
Tom Ormiston per talk
jonivanroost1 He could program an A.i to write that library too
John is one of the few people in the world who can talk for 3 hours straight and i'll happily listen to him.
Yep
Did this guy literally just sit on that chair for two hours straight talking.. wow.
I hope it was a comfortable chair.
Ninjaz Made with the skins of human babies, so yes, very comfortable.
Ninjaz He is God on Earth.
Ninjaz Yeah I was surprised too. Last time he only sat down after an hour of talking.
***** I love how he never has a script. How many people can do that?.. And still be interesting.
Usually he`s standing talking for 2 hours...If he`s allowed
John Carmack is a genius.
Indeed. I have followed his work for a long time now. Love everything he does. He is an absolute GENIUS. And a legend.
His brain is fast. And creative.
One of the few true geniuses of our time.
Anyone in the tech / engineering space can gain insights from this man. Not just gamers or VR.
And not even a single note card...good job Mr. Carmack! We're looking forward to updating to the CV1!
I really wanna lay down some cups around his chair, so that when he leaks drops of passion I could use them to synthesis a motivational serum.
My contribution to the world.
Remember that's a dark path to go down, if you've seen perfume a story of murder.. But, as carmack might say, It had some interesting results..
John Carmak is the Steven Hawkings of videogames
More like the Albert Einstein
I could listen indefinitely to this man.
One stage....one chair....one Carmack!... wow I don't know which is more numb, my brain or my backside!... ;)
Ah, wish I could have attended that talk.
+Michael Nakhiengchanh thats my head in the first row, dead center

LMAO, 100% ceramic mug. Carmack is thrilled :)
John Carmack moves to another reality when talking. Doesnt matter what the chair is :D
Did he just ask the audience if they used a CV1 or the Vive? Does that mean the Crescent Bay prototype is basically the CV1? 3:45
Gary Singh Yeah I heard that too. Maybe he said CB1.. idk.
Gary Singh CV1 was literally just announced to be coming "Q1 2016"
Anders Öhlund Lol. Maybe he did mean CV1. Does that mean CV1 = Crescent Bay specs?
JZ-/nuff sed Probably fairly close at least. They will be rolling out more information over the following weeks.
Upvoted before watching.

Who set up this super wide long shot of one person talking for 2hrs straight LOL
Does that camera have a zoom on it? This is a very uncomfortably framed shot. Great content though.
click the cog and select 0.5 speed. Turns this into an easier to follow 4 hour talk haha
@ 3:45 Caught you, Oculus! CV1 is coming!!! Woh00!!!!!!!!!!!
woopygoman omg confirmed. www.roadtovr.com/oculus-announce-consumer-oculus-rift-release-date-is-q1-2016-breaking/
JZ-/nuff sed Q1 2016!!? Awesome!!
John carmack enters the scene and tells himself: Ahhhh finally, a chair. Now we can talk.
thanks for sharing Oculus
You mean hyperdimensional information singularity space-time anomaly John Carmack?
John Carmack for GameDev is same as A.Einstein for Physics :-)
Great speech but I'd put some cacodemons, hell knights and imps on the stage to keep John company.
A "VR renaissance" that is much hype and little hardware. Launch the damn thing already!

Dumbest fucking comment.
Camera man forgot to zoom in before he stepped away!
thats my head in the middle left.
1:52:42 well this is awkward

This stage setup is really weird, its looks like hes facing a firing squad or something
The Elder God
Put Carmack on a chair and he'll talk for long integer minutes.
How many demons has this man killed?
From a practial stand point. Gear VR is a porn tool and Carmack would agree :)
