When Carmack talks, shut up and listen! Do not interrupt, and especially do not plan "give him just 90 minutes". I am sad that Carmack is not a CEO of the Oculus after Lucky Palmer left. That duo would have made VR something far more amazing than it is today.
Not really, ideas are just ideas without financial backing. Facebooks has almost limitless resources, Palmer lucky had pocket pint compared to Facebook. I AM NOT BASHING him just saying you can do anything with enough money.
@@drewpatterson8009 For all of Lucky's many faults, he at least was enthusiastic about VR and had a pioneering spirit. Facebook's only interest in VR is datamining the hell out of its users' biometrics and they will probably kill the whole thing in a few years when they realize its not bringing the users. It's a shame. In the VR space, Oculus could have been Microsoft, but they wanted to be Apple, and ended up being Sinclair.

They call the team in to upgrade the hardware? I didn't see Carmack in that video when I assume he would be needed. LOL.
For those of us that don't want or need a standalone headset getting a Quest isn't an option. I am SO happy with my Rift S, it's light, comfortable and runs perfect with PC VR games. Everything that the Quest does not. If Oculus does not change their mind on this my next headset will be something from HTC/HP/whatever. Bit strange that they just drop this important part of the VR market - the market in which their whole company was built. I guess the old Oculus is no more.
you're comment is dumb cus you've clearly never tried oculus link or you'd know how dumb you sound. quest 2 literally has an objectively better display that will work better for pcvr than the rift s.
Of all the things you could critique about occulus I don't think their insuffuenct dedication to PCVR is a legit one. I agree with you about rift s being awesome, but Carmack is ultimately right - standalone is more important for more people than the lucky few of us who have top line gaming PCs. It's sad that gear VR is no longer supported by Samsung.
@@Playr0ne The reality is that, if you want cutting-edge PC VR, you're going to have to buy an Index. If I could video conference in VR while having real time, effortless access to my files, and be able to present them in a virtual manner to the whole room, then that would be a teleconference game changer. Doesn't need to be high detail, Rec Room level avatars would suffice. Just reach down into my files, and toss up a Death By Powerpoint Special for all to see in real time, as well as displaying graphical training aids (charts, reference materials, etc) slapped up on the walls for attendants to glance at (or interact with) while I manage the main presentation.
That's kind of the worry for me with VR, it's the one space where you actually have a small enough niche and people that are interested and enthusiastic enough to propel it.. kind of like the the origins of PC gaming, and we all know how that worked out.. It died, and now they don't make them anymore.. every PC game nowadays is a console game that was usually sloppily compiled, with options and expandability that are only forcefully extracted and increasingly difficult to do so. With an audience that doesn't even remember or never existed back when things like leaning and more complex gameplay mechanical and InDesign, weren't an abstraction they were the norm. Pretty much the last real PC game to come out was half-life Alyx, a VR game go figure.. and I really hope Valve doesn't lose that part, as every reason as to why they made it is actually the reason why I got interested in video games in the first place and have just seen everything that I love be the thing that nobody actually cared about.
Yeah. Sucked they took probably the best feature from the poor Go users who got screwed 🙁. Rooms was so much fun. Loved going to my own space and played games with friends.
There's definitely some things that haptics, or at least wearable parts can solve with how people deal with the nausea effects.. things like accelerometers to track your position in the game that can just add a little bit more to overcoming the uncanny valley and with every step making the experience also better in terms of immersion.. There's a lot of things that need to be worked out before things become a standard, and that was always my worry with quest and the Facebook era is that they were trying to standardize things.. you don't want this to be popular yet it's not ready.. you kind of don't want it to ever be popular, rather just enough so that It can exist and continue to evolve in a forward direction.
