    I love visiting specimen rooms. They're like a twisted death-filed cross between grocery store shelves and a reference library. Love them to pieces. Dr. Williams is so cool and seems really kind and her field is so interesting - Animal-based 'ecosystems' themselves are fascinating and understanding what populations are actually present where is soooo important for conservation. This is quickly becoming one of my favorite channels since I found the slow-mo insects. When I get a chance I want to go back and watch the long-form interviews you've done with professors. Keep em coming and thank you for giving us a peek into your world! - Biologist hopeful from TX with too many interests

    As someone who used to catch Crayfish (or "Crawdads", as so many called them) in southern WV streams as a child, this segment was one that really pushed the nostalgia-buttons. Thank you for featuring these fascinating arthropods, and the hard work of Dr. Williams!

    I was a bit of a crayfish nut as a kid. We'd keep them in our fish tank, and slowly lose them to their suicide attempts as they'd find ways of crawling out at night.
    I'd imagine that you can't depend merely on the physical characteristics to determine species. Within a species, there could be much variation. You'd have to look at behaviour and habitat to make a certain determination, wouldn't you?

    What if (like the dinosaurs) the different “species” are really some of the same, but at different ages? What are the determining factors that decide they aren’t?

    • @409playa
      @409playa 2 роки тому +1

      I think yes, a particular species could exist at the same time as a descended species like you describe, but it would be much more common that the two species you would compare that exist today would be descended from the same species, with one just being more similar to the original.
      There are different things that determine a species. One feature that is used to determine species is sexual isolation, in which a species can produce offspring with the same species, but not another. Nowadays, genetics play a larger role. How species are defined has a long and debated history.

    This is science kids. Sticking your hands in a muddy holes in the wilderness to grab a crustacean to be able to say. Yes, you are a different species little buddy. SCIENCE!
    Edit: I actually really enjoyed this would love long form pieces on them even. Like what differentiates one crayfish species from another? There must certainly be many layers from physiology to genetics to their types of actions (like how they build nests).
