It can be for that, but actually he said it portrays his wife who has a rare auto immune disease who becomes paralyzed a lot and can’t move and she can barely can do anything. My mom has it and it sucks but I can’t imagine his wife’s because her is more rare than my mothers

When I first got this song, my Best Friend sent it. He was like- this is how I feel. I was in shock. He told me he loved me and we are currently in the most romantic, sweet relationship ever- and I can thank him for that! ^^

Song fact is that Rob Thomas wrote it about watching his wife suffer from an autoimmune disease and not being able to help her.
Thomas told The Canadian Press that his goal is always for his lyrics to transcend the personal. He explained: "My wife has an auto-immune disease and me and her deal with that for the last six or seven years. But at the end of the day, it's really a song about being empathetic, when the person closest to you is going through something and you can't do anything to make it better except to be there for them. I think a lot of times my job is to take myself out of the song, and write about something intensely personal but write about the residual emotion of that, like how does that make me feel, because everyone can relate to that. If you write about the way something makes you feel, that becomes more universal."
I could imagine that this song was written to meet and uplift every person at their own interpretation and understanding of it. So whether it's about Lupus, Depression, or anything else, if you're going through what the woman in this song is, you're going through some shit. Those are the people this song is written for.

Yup. What a great song that probably has meant so much to so many people. Makes me really count my blessing because God has been so so good to me. It’s unfair for people who’ve gone through this song but I’m thankful it’s there for the people who need it.
Rob wrote this song for his wife with lupus. I have a cousin disease - juvenile rheumatoid arthritis - and will always love this song due to how much I can relate.

She has some of the same problems as someone with Lupus but she doesn't have it. She has something that is pretty rare and Rob says that they aren't going to explain it. I watched a Q&A last night and they kept asking if that's what she had and it makes them upset from the looks of it.

@@Kay-Kays-reborns cannot agree with you more. i still had both my parents when this song came out. my mom loved this song, i’d always put it on CD’s for her & we’d drive around listening to this. they unfortunately both passed recently, my father in 2020 & my mother not even a full year later. it was fast, sudden, and tragic. crushed my little brother & i. i miss them so much it hurts, haven’t fully accepted it or figured out how to cope, but i know with them looking down on me & with me using the tools & lessons they taught & gave to me, i’ll make it.

This song makes me feel like I’m being seen. I just wish my tears were diamonds to some but it’s okay. dealing with depression for about a year now and it’s one day at a time. I was just diagnosed with CIDP which is a lot like lupus or MS. And it has been hurting me mentally and especially physically. This song helps knowing there is someone out there who can love me through a chronic illness ❤️ not easy at 24 but one day at a time 😌

Diagnosed with SLE lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjorgen's syndrome and fibromyalgia in my early 30s. This song nails how I feel every day and how helpless my husband feels watching me suffer.
This song is so beautiful!! Reminds me of my friend in Elementary that died of Cancer... I miss her so much... she was so nice.

I thank God every day for my mom beating breast cancer. My mom has always said I helped her beat it. When she was diagnosed I had just had surgery on my right leg. Yes I was in pain but I was determined to be there for my mom. Yes it might of set my recovery back a bit but I didn't care. My mama means the world to me.
I have never heard a song by Rob that wasn't beautiful, he finds words to express how I feel when I can't, and he writes songs that make me feel better and some bring me to tears, like this one. I've been listening to him since I was little :) I don't know much about Lupus, but I know it's painful. God bless you all

This song can make me cry out of the blue...when we hit around 1:45 or so, it becomes the most beautiful, sad, moving thing I've ever heard. I saw Mr. Thomas sing this last week in concert, right in the front row, and had tears rolling down my cheeks in front of a crowd of thousands. I wasn't alone.
I got diagnosed with lupus 4 years ago and it's been a constant battle since then.
This song makes me feel like I'm not alone in this.

hi everyone this is for my friend ashlee shes the strongest fighter i have ever known she has had kidney cancer sezuries and now brain tumors and shes only 15 and theres nothing they can do for her i just feel so helpless and i cant see her
So sorry to read this- I just recently had to shave the hair off of a friend that is dying from a rare cancer and going through chemo. It just breaks your heart - you just feel helpless ( I feel your pain) just keep the faith and pray. God understands what we don't. Blessing to you and your dear friend. I have been on both sides of this song; Rob’s and his wife’s. I have been depressed and had so much grief, and no one knew what to do. I have also been the one who had a loved one who was down in it, and it is an indescribable feeling not to be able to help

@BigBossDude6669 it actually is; Rob Thomas wrote this song for/dedicated this song to his wife who struggles with Lupus. From experience, I can easily relate the lyrics to lupus and or chronic/invisible illness in general.
Someone once played this song for me & said "this is you." I didn't know it was written about his wife being ill, maybe that's why it connected with me. I'd been ill for a very long time, & severely depressed because of it, & during that time this song helped me continue to get out of bed every day. "She'll be alright, just not tonight." Somehow that line helped me cope.
thanks for explaining, my Mom, not only was widowed, at a young age, with 7 kids. But, she died from cancer, at 68. Human beings, can only survive, just so much. the pain, it becomes a cancer. God will only, endure, you so much.

I did not expect to come across this song tonight. I loved it so much when I was younger and had no idea of the story behind it. I'm now in a similar situation where the love of my life is sick and man do I cry. I feel all his pain and I cry all his tears.
I can just imagine how it feels to have someone you love be that way, I never had someone to love. But I do have a heart, I feel bad for even the littlest things that are bad. But why should I care? I care because I know maybe one day I'll have the power to do what it takes to make these little things better, Even if you can't change them I will try my best. I know I can't take life anymore, and I can't get a gf or find bestfriend. But since my life sucks I want to make it better for other ppl.

I have a friend one of the strongest people I know, she suffers from spastic paraplegia...in short her life gets progressivley harder, everyday. She was someone who did a lot of out door activities and now shes disabled and I know it kills her inside. This song reminds me of her, being her friend and her dimonds falling down.

This song is very close to my heart, my mother was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis at the age of 3. I always struggle more than she does just watching her flinch with the pain in her eyes. I have fybro, it's really hard. I remember when I was first was diagnosed most Dr didn't recognize this. it was so hard. I have 1 Dr saying this and 2 saying it's not real. I choose to believe the later. when this song came out I realized this is real. lots of ppl suffering just because the FDA hasn't supported it does not mean I don't hurt like hell! I'm not a whimp I've about 17 surgeries, I know pain. this Pain doesn't end, ever. his words are right in tune. crazy on point. I'm so sorry for anybody who has to suffer, pain isn't gonna give u Mercy and take a break. it changes u, everything you were.
This song played before Avatar in 2009 when my brother took us all out to see it. The movie was forgettable except for the astounding visuals but the song remains for me.

I remember singing this song in Voice Workshop class for my great-grandmother after she'd just been diagnosed with breast and lung cancer. She died from the lung cancer about a year and a half ago. I never really took the chance to get to know her even though she lived right down the street and I regret it. :(
@iJrockable Very true. I have Lupus, and I am only 15 years young. My mother died from it at 39, and all she really could do to avoid the pain was smile and say she was fine, I was nine, so I didn't know any better. I beared through it with her, and was diagnosed August of 2007, 2 months after she died, just 5 days after my tenth birthday.

Her twentieth birthday was on Monday, actually. In addition, my best friend's mother, who I considered my mom myself passed away from Lupus six months ago. I truly wish people had more awareness of it, and I honestly wish there was a cure. Hang in there
While I can't directly relate to lupus, I can relate to having an 'invisible' disease, being I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. I've lived with it my whole life, and I know firsthand how hard it is. I absolutely ADORE this song, Rob Thomas, and his wife! All beautiful :)
