TRANSLATION & MEANING A lot of people do not understand this song but love it for Sajjads voice and music. However those who speak punjabi know that the most beautiful thing about this song is the poetry / lyrics and what they mean. So here is an attempt from me to translate and explain this song for you guys. Background : Sajjad Ali is a famous Pakistani writer/musician/singer. This song is in Punjabi language, Punjab is a province in Pakistan. Ravi (song name) is after the great river Ravi which runs through Eastern Pakistan. Those who have lived in villages know thay the river, streams or tributaries are the center point for social activity. Think community pool, picnic spot, dating spot etc all in one. This is a song about someone who is far away from home (has built a home away from home) misses the life and loved ones back home and basically would do anything to get back but he cannot due to various reasons. And what better place to shoot the video in than Dubai / UAE where thousands of Pakistanis are working in all walks of life. Who have come there for greener pastures and to support the family back home, but now after many years cannot leave due to dependencie etc. And since he cannot go back he is thinking "je aithon kadi ravi lang jave" what if the river ravi could run through here. And the rest of the song revolves around this prayer to see the ravi ince again and what he would do if that was possible. So he wishes and then he realizes the childishness of his wish, yet wishes again. I might not be spot on but here is an attempt to translate and explain the song for you. Je aithon kadi Ravi langh jaave If only the river ravi could run through here Hayati Punjabi ban jaave Life woukd be so beautiful once again. Note: Punjaabi is a dual meaning word here it means a 'beautiful life' and also is the name of his home town punj aab (5 rivers) Main bediyan hazaar tod laan Id break a thousand shackles around me to see the day. Main paani’cho saah nichod laan Id literally squeez the air out if the water to see/breathe the day Je aithon kadi Raavi langh jaave ho… If only the river ravi could run through here Je Raavi vich paani koi nai But there is barely any water in the ravi now Note: reality hits the dreamer that its never gonna happen so he is consoling himself Te apni kahani koi nai And there is no more me and you Je sang beliya koi nai And since i have no friend/lover anymore Note : beliya is a word used for partner in general. It could mean friend and it could mean lover. Te kise nu sunani koi nai So i have nothing to tell anyone anyway Ankhaan ch dariya ghol ke Oh I'd stir up a river in my eyes (tears of happiness maybe) Note : once again despite the impossibility of his wish he wishes Main zakhma di thaa te rod laan And wash my wounds away with them Je aithon kadi Raavi langh jaave ho… If only the river ravi could run through here Ki kaisi majboori ho gayi What problem/compulsion did i have Ke sajna ton doori ho gayi That i am far away from my love Note : once again sajan can be used for friend and for lover. I have lived abroad for 12 years now, have lived on 3 continents and 6 countries but the love and affection I feel for my beloved Lahore, the soil, the river , the canals and the unfathomable love the city gives to anyone wanting to making it home, is unparalleled. I have been to world capitals like London, Rome, Milan, Amsterdam, Brussels and now live in Toronto but I haven't seen or felt what I feel for my Lahore, my Punjab, my country.
Dear, everybody has a special feeling, attraction, and emotional attachment for the native place he or she used to live. Where he spent the golden time of childhood with parents, siblings and friends.
Your song brought tears to my eyes, and memories of my childhood in the 70’s.... traveling from Mangla to Lahore on the GT road with my father, and crossing the toll and bridge on the Ravi. Those were wonderful, simple times.... missing my father.

iam from chamba Himachal Pradesh (India).....ravi river originates near bara bangal glacier and runs across chamba and via punjab enters into Pakistan ...... this river has a great significance in culture of chamba .....such a beautiful song.... people make boundaries but nature and art (music) finds its way to unite people again❤️
I am from Assam, Tinsukia the most eastern part of India... The Brahmaputra river is the lifeline of this valley. It flows from Manas Sarovar, Himalaya through China : like the Ravi..... It conveys the same feelings of livelihood, love stories that has been inherited generations after generations..... Political boundaries are so dangerous, we share the same feelings, emotions..... love you Sajjad Ali Saheb ... ❤️ ❤❤❤❤
I am from Sindh, the south eastern part of Pakistan. We Sindhis feel same for the "Sindhu" what the Punjabis feel for Ravi & the Bengalis feel for Padma(Ganga) !!

last time i saw u wrote lyrics of MADAHANIYA and now its RAVI... ur grip on punjabi is beyond appreciation...whole theme and all words become crystal clear...thanks for revealing true colours of this song
This song is so beautiful. My father was born in a village on the bank of river Ravi. I feel so connected with this song.I have even decided to name my daughter Raavi.
Your love is understandable coz of your dad, but dont give your daughter such name . Ravi has seen many diversities good and bad. These names last heavy impressions on kid's life path.Kindly dont do this.☺ . Love from Lahore Pakistan.
@@nadianawaz1108 My love for Ravi is not only because of my dad.I was born and live in Gurdaspur(where Ravi flows) and where a person is born and is raised its only natural and obvious to have love for that place. Moreover I might be be moving to Canada and want my kids to remember where our roots are and where we come from .Thats what I thought when I decided the name Raavi. Also I believe that life is never easy and one is ought to face difficulties in his/her life.Raavi has seen many adversities but it survived those adversities and still stands strong at its place and inshallah will.Anyways I am grateful for your reply, you took time to write what you thought and to show your concern.Thank you😊
My heart skipped a beat on this song. Being an eastern Punjabi, this song just simply strikes the right cord in my heart ❤️. Lots of love from the other side of the Ravi. 🙏🙏
He is really spreading love among people nations Allah always bless him with greatest... there much more he earns from.this than money ... I see alot of love from Indian which is so beautiful indeed spreading and getting love

This song makes me wanna vist Pakistan, My granddad was from Pakistan, he use to say all the beautiful things about the Punjab which is in Pakistan now, one day i want to go to Pakistan and see the place whr my nanu use to live, Meanwhile m gonna listen to this beautiful song, God bless you, please keep creating such beautiful songs. Music is the only thing which is uniting us. Love from the half punjab to the other half in Pakistan.
Surbhi hi, if you go to Pakistan, it will be difficult for you to leave your new family there once your visit comes to an end.. Let Punjab know you are not From that Pubjab, then see the magic of their hospitality. You are welcome!
My attempt at English translation of the song. Ravi is a river that goes through India and Pakistan punjab. Punjab means five rivers (Punj-aabi here would mean full of life). This is not a literal translation. If Ravi (water of) ever passes through here My existence would feel complete I would break thousands of shackles And squeeze breath from the water If Ravi passes through here... If there is no water in the Ravi Then I have no story to tell If I have no friends and close ones then I don't need to tell the story anyway I'll mix the sea water in my eyes And rub it on my wounds If Ravi ever passes through here... How did this compulsion come about? That I was taken afar from my loved ones Flowing with times how did this life pass by? Leaving this life/way with strangers I can move my reigns back home If Ravi ever passes through here...

The background music of every song of yours makes the difference . Whether it is “Maine Ek Kitab” or “Lagaya Dil” or any other song. The music composition of every song is the strength of Sajjad sir . It is neither to complex nor that easy, but perfect. And simple plain singing adds cherry on top 🍒 .
Agreed, after reading ur comment I listen that channa song n although sajjad ali try really hard with instruments n whole arrangement but the base of the song is pretty similar , sajjad ali ka purana masla hay Ye , cover singer , ashamed really ashamed that he claim this composition as his, apart from that composition singing is divine n soul searching

Sir itna sukoon matlab shabd nahi hai ❤️ aapke liye bharat se kuchh likhna chahta hu ki Humare in faaslon ne mohobbat inti gehri kar di hai,ki agar ek bhi kadam hum dono mein se kisi ne bhi age badhaya to doob jayenge mohobbat mein aapki.
Some people don't recognize that his genius is not limited to his vocals. He did that in one shot with his hands in his pockets and nothing but his facial expressions to engage the audience for just under 4 minutes. The maskeen smiles, the sigh to convey his sadness and then not lip syncing on the alaap in the end because it was external to the feel of the video. I see u Sir and my hat is off!
To all my beloved who live abroad, i do understand that how much courage it requires to stay so far from you family, lover, kids, parents for little earning and better future...but the sad part is "life is too short".

Je aithon kadi Ravi langh jaave
If only the river ravi could run through here
Hayati Punjabi ban jaave
Life woukd be so beautiful once again.
Note: Punjaabi is a dual meaning word here it means a 'beautiful life' and also is the name of his home town punj aab (5 rivers)
Main bediyan hazaar tod laan
Id break a thousand shackles around me to see the day.
Main paani’cho saah nichod laan
Id literally squeez the air out if the water to see/breathe the day
Je aithon kadi Raavi langh jaave ho…
If only the river ravi could run through here
Je Raavi vich paani koi nai
But there is barely any water in the ravi now
Note: reality hits the dreamer that its never gonna happen so he is consoling himself
Te apni kahani koi nai
And there is no more me and you
Je sang beliya koi nai
And since i have no friend/lover anymore
Note : beliya is a word used for partner in general. It could mean friend and it could mean lover.
Te kise nu sunani koi nai
So i have nothing to tell anyone anyway
Ankhaan ch dariya ghol ke
Oh I'd stir up a river in my eyes (tears of happiness maybe)
Note : once again despite the impossibility of his wish he wishes
Main zakhma di thaa te rod laan
And wash my wounds away with them
Je aithon kadi Raavi langh jaave ho…
If only the river ravi could run through here
Ki kaisi majboori ho gayi
What problem/compulsion did i have
Ke sajna ton doori ho gayi
That i am far away from my love
Note : once again sajan can be used for friend and for lover. So it's a song which can be when you miss your friend, family or lover
Te veleya de naal vagh di
And while running this race with time
Eh jind kadon poori ho gayi
When did my life cime to an end
Beganeya di raah chhod ke
Oh id leave these foolish ways (or the way of the unaware)
Note: this is him wishing now once again
Main apni mahar maud laan
Id change my direction / fix my course
Note: Mahar is like the camels noose which you control him through
Je aithon kadi Raavi langh jaave
If only the river ravi could run through here

This song tells us that you dont need flashy studio or behooda dance sequences to make a song hit. You just need a legendary singer like Sajjad Sir.
Yes lots better than Indian fast Punjabi music which are more westernised & sound same & like shit. This is pure poetry & composition.
Each song has its own demands

And the rest of the song revolves around this prayer to see the ravi ince again and what he would do if that was possible. So he wishes and then he realizes the childishness of his wish, yet wishes again.
I might not be spot on but here is an attempt to translate and explain the song for you.
Je aithon kadi Ravi langh jaave
If only the river ravi could run through here
Hayati Punjabi ban jaave
Life woukd be so beautiful once again.
Note: Punjaabi is a dual meaning word here it means a 'beautiful life' and also is the name of his home town punj aab (5 rivers)
Main bediyan hazaar tod laan
Id break a thousand shackles around me to see the day.
Main paani’cho saah nichod laan
Id literally squeez the air out if the water to see/breathe the day
Je aithon kadi Raavi langh jaave ho…
If only the river ravi could run through here
Je Raavi vich paani koi nai
But there is barely any water in the ravi now
Note: reality hits the dreamer that its never gonna happen so he is consoling himself
Te apni kahani koi nai
And there is no more me and you
Je sang beliya koi nai
And since i have no friend/lover anymore
Note : beliya is a word used for partner in general. It could mean friend and it could mean lover.
Te kise nu sunani koi nai
So i have nothing to tell anyone anyway
Ankhaan ch dariya ghol ke
Oh I'd stir up a river in my eyes (tears of happiness maybe)
Note : once again despite the impossibility of his wish he wishes
Main zakhma di thaa te rod laan
And wash my wounds away with them
Je aithon kadi Raavi langh jaave ho…
If only the river ravi could run through here
Ki kaisi majboori ho gayi
What problem/compulsion did i have
Ke sajna ton doori ho gayi
That i am far away from my love
Note : once again sajan can be used for friend and for lover. So it's a song which can be when you miss your friend, family or lover
Te veleya de naal vagh di
And while running this race with time
Eh jind kadon poori ho gayi
When did my life cime to an end
Beganeya di raah chhod ke
Oh id leave these foolish ways (or the way of the unaware)
Note: this is him wishing now once again
Main apni mahar maud laan
Id change my direction / fix my course
Note: Mahar is like the camels noose which you control him through
Je aithon kadi Raavi langh jaave
If only the river ravi could run through here
Thank you guys. You simply cannot do justice to the beautiful punjabi language through a simple translation but I hope you liked the effort.

I feel like that about Karachi (all love for Lahore as well). I’m in Toronto as well. Salam bhai

It conveys the same feelings of livelihood, love stories that has been inherited generations after generations..... Political boundaries are so dangerous, we share the same feelings, emotions..... love you Sajjad Ali Saheb ... ❤️ ❤❤❤❤

You are welcome. Be my guest
You're welcome sis anytime @surbhisharma
My attempt at English translation of the song. Ravi is a river that goes through India and Pakistan punjab. Punjab means five rivers (Punj-aabi here would mean full of life). This is not a literal translation.
If Ravi (water of) ever passes through here
My existence would feel complete
I would break thousands of shackles
And squeeze breath from the water
If Ravi passes through here...
If there is no water in the Ravi
Then I have no story to tell
If I have no friends and close ones then I don't need to tell the story anyway
I'll mix the sea water in my eyes
And rub it on my wounds
If Ravi ever passes through here...
How did this compulsion come about?
That I was taken afar from my loved ones
Flowing with times how did this life pass by?
Leaving this life/way with strangers
I can move my reigns back home
If Ravi ever passes through here...
👌
Beautiful...
Water symbolizes life and its waves signifies Ups and downs in th humanistic life... etc etc

You are absolutely right. This song is all about those who are far away from their own lands or the time when they were close to their dear ones.

Partition was the worst thing happened to both the countries.. especially the Punjabs of Pakistan and India, we're same in so many ways. My trip to Lahore , Multan, Nankana sahib in 2006 was the most beautiful trip I've ever had in my life. The love and respect I got from Pakistani people was beyond expectations. Hats off to Mr. Sajjad Ali for this beautiful song.
Some times things are important to do in time , partition was also very important.

Nothing beats your original version of this song! Apki awaz men wo ehsas aur sukun hai jo kisi aur ki me nahi. Itni sehejta se apne ise gaa diya ek simple se video men. Hats off!

Dear Sherry Bakhsi, you very Well defined Sajad Ali Sahab.....This is indeed a sentimental song.

Love you bro
Some people don't recognize that his genius is not limited to his vocals. He did that in one shot with his hands in his pockets and nothing but his facial expressions to engage the audience for just under 4 minutes. The maskeen smiles, the sigh to convey his sadness and then not lip syncing on the alaap in the end because it was external to the feel of the video. I see u Sir and my hat is off!
To all my beloved who live abroad, i do understand that how much courage it requires to stay so far from you family, lover, kids, parents for little earning and better future...but the sad part is "life is too short".
