In the UK 250SLs are sold for nearly twice what you mentioned for the USA.
    Superb cars.

I'm looking for a good SL and I
found one in France, nearly 250km from my home in Holland. But is was a cheap one, to cheap I'm my opinion. Now I know why, it seems to be a 230 engine with hand gearbox. So thanks for this good advice !

I love those w113... however they're quite too much expensive here in Brazil. For this, I'll buy a 280SL fiberglass replica, with 4.1L 6cylinders Chevrolet engine.
It's based on an very easy-maintaining car here, the Chevy Opala, so it will be more "usable". I think it will fullfill my admiration towards this wonderful Mercedes-Benz

I have a 280 but I prefer the aesthetics and simplicity of 230 or early 250. I really don’t understand the irrational fascination with the 280.

Apropos of nothing, I prefer the color-keyed hubcaps and wide chrome beauty rings with blackwall tires to the full wheel covers, especially with whitewalls. That's not only on Pagodas but also on any 1960s M-B. If the full wheel covers are correct, just with blackwalls.

The 250 is the best. The motor is as good with no cooling system issues like the 280. Also the 250 looks more classy than the heavily used plastic used in the 280sl.

What do you think of 1998 SL500?

@@Ken-bp5rk best of the R129 series started then till 2003. They solved the wiring issues and I believe they upgraded the top electrics. Lastly there was OB2 versus the proprietary OB1 pre 1996.

Appreciate the perspective. I have shopped for pagodas and have been disappointed in the choices as most have been over restored and not applicable for the daily driver I am looking for or rust/wrecks... I will need the A/C so I am stuck in the 280 market

it's clear your shopping too much in the dealer sector. This is usually what they have available. You have to buy a car like that from a private seller / long-term owner

A good place to look for a Pagoda, not from a dealer is here: www.sl113.org/forums This site is dedicated to The W113 Pagoda. Mostly owners helping each other out. And if one wants to sell they usually post it in the For Sale forum on the site before it any where else.

Thank you for all the info . I do have a question you may be able to assist in . I found a 68 280 sl . The top of the body is in good condition with all the trim and original seats , however the bottom portion is retry much all rusted out . Out of curiosity and I am aware this is a broad question how much do you think it could go for with the original engine still being able to run ?

A 280SL in Concourse or better condition will realise close to AUD 300,000 in Australia at present- USD 225 to 230,000. They are gorgeous, but not cheap!

Hello and thanks so much for sharing your knowledge with Benz enthusiast who are new and don’t know their way around yet. I’m looking at buying a 1980’s 280SL and want to know how to find out if there is rust inside the rocker panels and other areas that are not visible without drilling holes. Tap test? I don’t want to purchase a beautiful on the outside rust bucket. Thanks very much

Want to convert my 280 Sl to rack and pinion steering to better facitate a GM LS style engine replacement. It is left hand drive. I am a very capable fabricator/welder. Question is which rack and pinion would work best. Any make or model. American would be great for hose hook ups. Thanks.

I had a 280sl from the states, revved high on motorways, 12 mpg, awful thing, unstable, mondeo much better, £800.00,. I think values will plummet rapidly soon of pagodas

Over-restored? Do you mean like the guy who spent $60K on paint & body work for his ‘73 Ford Pinto which had no family or sentimental connection? The same guy who’s afraid to drive it for fear of a stone chip? 😉

I think future generations of people will lose interest in classic cars, as they won't remember them from childhood days, plus emissions, buy property is my advice, I did. Plus all that maintenance, labour of love, Nissan micra quicker than a 280sl 😂😂
