Mud also works (take some dirt, put some water in it). Try it with different types of soil (plant soil, garden soil). Recommended if you want multiple props and you want them to look somewhat different. Also if you want burns, try placing the wet paper above a stove flame and just let it crisp in places (the fact that it's wet will stop the burn extending)
You get such a fantastic dark color from your coffee. I can't seem to get anywhere near this dark. I've even tried just squeezing the kitchen roll so darker liquid comes out (resulting in a split and coffee grounds all over the paper, which wasn't horrible in the end). Thank you for this tutorial!
Nice little vid. Might add that if you used a tea bag it might last a little longer as the towel might just disintegrate. Also if while it is wet if you place literally one instant coffee ground on the wet paper it will produce a very intense dark brown mark. Old paper is prone to fungus attack which looks exactly like that.
This is so awesome, and very useful! (On a lesser note, my confusion at "kitchen roll" was so hilarious, I wish you could've seen my face. I've always known them as paper towels.)
@@vspinnetOnly if you put your nose close to the paper. I followed this toturial and had the same thought. But no intense coffee smell. Only a faint coffee aroma.
yeah....the coffee smell will linger... a better technique is to use a sponge with diluted acrylic paint of Yellow Ocre, Burn Sienna or Raw Umber: that way, you achieve the tan look of aged paper without the smell.
I have used tea that i soaked for very a long time, after some time the colour turns more like a coffee. Pour the black tea onto a steel baking tray (or any large flat tray) and put the papers into to it, one by one. The dark colour comes rather uniformly which i like. Dripping the extra tea off and drying will always leave some patterns so it's not like absolutely uniform. Also, i used to wrap the paper into a scroll and tie it with a cord, while it was damp, and then dry it. More tighter, more pronounced effect. Too much and the paper rips. That way the wrapping wrinkle stays in the paper and it looks like it has stayed like that for a very long time. If you are carefull, you can darken the edges while it's in scroll form with heat. That will leave more uniform darkening on the outer edge. Best to do this when the paper is wet from tea.
Cool! I used to just brush actual coffee on the paper but now don't have an expresso machine anymore so was finding it hard to do it. Will try this way absolutely
He's likely used a laser printer. With an ink jet printer you'd have to stain first, print later. But then you have your in over the stained effect, Still looks good though.
I also use a little bit of shoe polish right around the edges, or you can take a wet sponge to a stamp pad. Something dark brown would be best, like it's been burned around the edges or like dirty fingertips have been handling the tattered edge.
I'm gunna have to try this. I make journals for funzies (from paper to full books though i never really use them, i just get bored of them when im done making them) so i am for sure gunna have to do this to my next ones :D Thank you!!!! :D
Does the treatment nullify the ability to write on the paper using calligraphy ink? Do you have to use waterproof ink if written beforehand and which inks do you use?
So will it make the paper smell like coffee all the time? I'm making a message in a bottle sort of thing so I'm wondering if everytime you open the bottle it'll smell like coffee lol
Is this what their paper would look like new? I mean, I see the aged look if you found a medieval scroll. But if I were shooting a scene that was based in medieval times wouldn't the paper still be white or off white?
Burned edges give the impression that someone didn’t want that scroll or manuscript to be read so they attempted to burn it and someone saved it, hence giving the idea that it was “saved” and therefore must be of importance. 😉
I smell like my boyfriend. Coffee & cigarettes.... My paper came out to dark :(.... But I love your technique, easy and fast. I used yours it was the least complicated out of all the ones I watched. Thanks
Why is it burned because maps were usually looked at under candle light you could knock the candle over you could hold it too close to the fire and you pull them from burning pirate ships come on think
+froibaad1 Ugh, you can buy one from Amazon, eBay, a standard arts and craft shop. I've also added the link in the description to make it extra easy...

+Giorgia Angelia Nice, gonna have to try that out.
yum dirt smelling paper!
Hmm, a coffee-scented journal. Fascinating!
Dogeofdestiny your sarcasm failed to note that the scent goes away after a few days
@@evarene07 People are so unappreciative.
I watched a ton of these, this one's by far the best looking..

Haha, no problem! It was cheap Tesco coffee.
It's instant coffee right? I bet that makes a difference.

Does the paper come out smelling like coffee (as I would imagine)?

Best and easiest paper distressing technique I've found. Thanks for keeping it short and simple.
You're very welcome!
Really good demo. Most authentic way of aging paper I've seen. Thanks for sharing.
Tip - you can use a new fork to get a similar effect as the tool thing he used with small blades(i already forgot it's name :þ)
Paper distresser
Thanks 🙏🏼😊

The coffee smell actually goes away very quickly.
bbut the smell of coffee is lovely
the best part is the coffee smell tho
Stop smelling the props, bro
Or the acid.

Thanks! I was looking for this to make a treasure map for my sons pirate themed birthday party 🏴☠️

How come your ink doesn't run when you add the coffee. I always have trouble

Underrated reply, using a laser printed fixed my problems...
@@haynerbass some people may actually write on the paper...in which case best to do that after
just let the ink dry if it is handweiten though.
Awesome video! I can't wait to try this as opposed to the soaking pan full of coffee/tea.
Nice one! Truly easy to do and requires minimal tools, save for the distresser. WHat would you recommend if one does not own a paper distresser?
Definitely useful, more than any other video on this subject. This guy deserves more credit!
Looks great, especially after the grade.
+kurt lindner The most important part!

If you do not have a paper distresser are there any substitutes?
Wow cutting the edges gave a old look… thank you for this idea👍🏽👍🏽
Great effect, really pleased with how it turned out, thanks very much.
Gotta remember this. Looks awesome!
I did in fact burn the sides of mine I tried to make today and it turned out great thanks and God bless
This might be a silly question but are you able to draw on it after you’ve aged it or do you have to do it first?
Very helpful, thank you so much. Love the little tool too x
Very good!
+CO.AG Music :)
This video just caused me to level up twice and now I'm sitting in my skill tree trying to figure out where to spend my skill points.
i really love the smell of the coffee while making this lol im obssesed
I put coffe and baked once, worked great too
Thanks that was really helpful
Outstanding!
The old papers were brown because they weren’t bleached like modern day paper. You can get unbleached paper and then do some aging on that
Great how-to. Thanks for creating this!
+CineSolutions No problem.
What was the density of the parchment paper you used?
Does this work with printed on paper or Will it smudge up
I used shoe polish once, worked really well
Can you write on it after aging it?

now lets say im am writing on this paper. .do i do the process first? or write first?
Does this process weaken the paper? Meaning it cannot handle the stress of being handled often after dyed?
No, it will be fine to handle. But it will put acid in your paper, so do not use it for something you want to keep forever.
If you have to make more paper vintage
Take a tub and pour coffee strained water or tea strained water, soak all papers in that and dry them. Done.
Mind blowing
really cool thanks
very useful , keep going!
+anthony chen Thanks.
Thank you!
+MyLife360 Thanks for watching.
Great Thank you, I know what kitchen roll is LOL
Thanks 😊
Surely the coffee mixture in a spray bottle would be much better and less messy?
Very lovely! Tanks
Any tips to ensuring the ink does not run? I've been doing calligraphy with fountain pen- the ink just ran everywhere
I’d do it afterwards once the paper is fully dry. Inkjet printer ink also isn’t waterproof so it gets distressed along with the paper
wow That's so great
thanks.
You see, I want to make one of these and somehow manage to fit the whole Minecraft end script on to one side
Awesome video! any news on Grim?

Paper got burned holding it near candies to read.
Do I detect a Cardiff accent?
I'm from Barry, so most likely!
Does the coffee smell go away tho...?
Yea
adjust ur lighting mate, the paper is ultra bright to the camera sensors
Paper got burned from fireplaces letting embers out. There isnt another real reason i can think of at all

Paper distresser? How the hell anyone's gonna get that? Show us something more attainable.

You can also use a seam ripper, the edge of a pair of sissors.
Throw some salt and baking powder at it before the drier for fun.
