kae587 The problem is it's NY and there's no where for traffic to go. That's why you see the traffic cops and police try to get traffic moving through the intersections if they see a fire truck approaching. The alternative is for vehicles stuck in the path of a firetruck to run the red light and get destroyed by the cross traffic.

I just cannot fathom why people cross in front of an approaching fire truck with lights, siren and air horn blazing. Are they mad, stupid or just plain so self centred that they DGAF? Maybe like one of the other posters said, start issuing tickets to divers and pedestrians for obstructing emergency vehicles.

+Joshua Cave That must be soooo frustrating. How about when someone is given a ticket, instead of just paying a fine, they are made to go to the fire house or the police station and explain to the crew why it was so important that they had to walk in front of their vehicle as they are rushing to an emergency. Second offence a trip to the emergency ward and spend a day at the rehab clinic to see the results of being hit by a heavy vehicle. Third offence spend a day riding along with a unit to see just how many idiots do such stupid shit and how stressful it is for the crews.
I call it "rub their noses in it to teach them a lesson" social corrective behaviour.
And no "get out of jail" cards or excuses, everyone is up for it.

Nowing the streets,and drivers of New York.The parp parp parp style made very little,if any difference,to anyone,its been used.The only thing guaranteed to get someone to move,or to inform someone they are blocking whatever vehicle it may be,is to let them now by way of holding the horn,until whatever obstruction moves.People/pedestrians will still cross,though.

fdny fire responses haft to be the most stressful and agonizing responses with all the crazy drivers and overcrowd of people I can only imagine
YES, IT CAN BE VERY STRESSFUL! HOWEVER, IF TRAFFIC GETS TO BE OVERWHELMING, THEY CAN CALL THE DISPATCHER AND TELL THEM THAT THEY ARE STUCK IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AND THEN THEY SEND OTHER UNITS AS WELL! THANKS VERY MUCH MY FRIEND! ;o)
you would think NYC could have Millions in REVENUE from motorist NOT yielding to Emergency vehicles. with the tech. today cameras could photo each vehicle license and send to owner/driver a nice ticket for $1000-$1500 per occurence. that would stop a lot of clutter on NYC streets.

After watching this video again, I am beginning to form some ideas about what the NYFD and NYPD should do to improve Emergency Vehicle response times.
1. Go a little easier on the air horn as I think that holding onto the horn just overwhelms many drivers. I believe that you would get a better response with a Parp Parp Parp Parp Parp tone instead of Paaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrpppppp.
2. Get the City of New York to mark the centre lane of wider one way streets with Emergency Vehicle Lane markings and legislate for ticketing and demerit point loss for drivers who regularly obstruct Emergency Vehicle in their responding mode. If every driver knows that travelling in the E.V. lane means YOU are the one who has to get out the way, then drivers will respond faster. Fit every E.V. with dash cams to record the rego of vehicles who obstruct them and then issue tickets straight away.
3. Fit bull bars to the front of E.V's and then ram the idiots who get in the way and legislate that the damage to other vehicles becomes the fault of the hit vehicles driver for obstructing an E.V.
4. Conduct routine public exercises with crash test dummies and pig carcases to show just what sort of damage a large E.V. can do to a pedestrian if hit while walking in front of it as it is responding in a hurry.

and to think I thought taxi drivers has road rage but it comes with being a city firefighter, when we respond to calls since we're in upstate NY it's very less city but still obnoxious drivers and people walking everywhere best solution get a cow push like on the old trains and just push the people and cars to the side.
