  • Plaster Coving Installation - How To Fill A Mitre
This is the seventh video in a series of Quick Coving Tips that explain how to install plaster coving and plaster cornice.
A professional plaster coving installer explains how to fill the plaster coving after the fitting stage with casting plaster to create the perfect finish. In this example, the installer is filling an internal mitre to create the perfect corner that a few days later will be ready for decoration.
    Step 1:
During filling the tools needed are a bucket of clean water and a wet brush; a wet and dry block, a straight busk and a kidney busk, an Indian Bowl containing casting plaster mixed to the correct consistency and a Small Tool.
    Step 2:
Once the fitter starts filling he must work quickly because the casting plaster becomes unworkable after 5-7 minutes. However, the more time and care that is spent on filling the better quality of the finished job will be so the installer works methodically but purposefully throughout.
    Step 3:
To begin with, the cornice is dampened with a wet brush to prevent the moisture from being sucked out of the casting plaster too quickly. The installer then uses a two stage approach to fill. He starts by filling the tops and bottoms of the cornice and followed by the mitre emphasizing the importance of working quickly.
    Step 4:
Once initial gaps are filled he scrapes off the excess with a Busk being careful not to scratch the face of the cornice with the metal. Particular attention is paid to the mitre, working with the Busk at a right angle to the joint he scrapes away the excess soft plaster that was added with the Small Tool earlier. First working one way then the other making sure to take the excess plaster off the face of the cornice.
    Step 5:
Just before commencing Stage 2 of the filling, he wipes the cornice with a damp brush to clean the face again. Then he repeats the process a second time; filling the tops and bottoms, filling the mitre and this time he also fills the screw holes.
After which he then cleans the surfaces and joint again with a Busk before bushing everything down a final time to remove the remaining crumbs of plaster (which by now will be drying out and becoming unworkable. Any scratches can be smoothed out with sandpaper.
Let it dry for a day and then start decorating it.
