Having heard Reelin' so many times over the years, this live one is far more interesting to me. Really amazing how they were able to put on this fresh coat of paint.
I bought this album when it came out, years after the band's last record (before their new stuff in the '00s) and long since they ever toured. In the liner note Walter Becker when asked why they decided to do a tour said simply because he wanted to hear "Babylon Sisters" done live. This whole album is great.
Both versions are great in my opinion, but I really appreciate it when artists reimagine their classic songs A great song can withstand many interpretations. So glad you both enjoyed it!
First....... I wanted to say that I love Steely Dan. That said...... the original version was good but this version is a total banger. By the time they performed this live they had grown and matured as musicians and this version reflects that. This version to me is much more complete and much jazzier than the original version. Thanks for reacting to this version. I had never heard it before. Take care.
I liked this not just a little bit more but a lot more! Awesome. I've never bopped like that to the original but I couldn't sit still with this version.
Smooth! I'm such a fan of the original, it took a while to catch the groove, but I came around. Have y'all done "Any World I'm Welcome To" or "Charlie Freak"? The first caused me to move, and the second moves me in a different way.
A creative reimagining to one of the songs that put them on the charts and set them apart from the rest of the musical universe. I am pretty sure that that’s Walter on the first solo and Drew Zing on the second Solo. Whole album is great. I’m so excited when it came out, but immediately played it to death. Especially love the live version of Sign in Stranger off this album. That’s one you never reacted to off of the Royal scam. Chance to do the live. At any rate spectacular request and reaction. I missed out on the Donald Fagen T-shirt. Left the double check that.
JK! the opening solo of the original by Elliott Randall is loved by Jimmy Page. My first taste of this live was New Years Rockin Eve 12.31.1972 and I was blown away..then in 2011 got to see them play it live in San Diego area at Viejas..awesome with the horns!
I like the "Alive" version better than the original. It is centered around a minor modality instead of the original's major underpinnings. This seems to create a more melancholy landscape that is far more interesting and lush. That and the elaborate horn chart push it over the top. The guitar and specifically the note choices by Zing are fabulous.
I prefer this version, myself. I am absolutely in the minority, but I always found the guitar solo in the original to be a little too obnoxious. The guitar solo here is much more palatable. I also think the live version is more mellow, and I prefer the harmonizing in the chorus along with the presence of the horns. Thanks for the reaction, you two. I hope you do more from this live album.
wow, for the first time I have been following you, I believe you picked the wrong version of this song, but keep the wonderful reacting, esp. on Genesis songs!
@@NicknLex I know, just giving my 4 cents. Usually this happens to a listener when they know the original best, haha, even happened to me a few times, just keep up the rad reactions!
George W on lead. Funny fact. This was never pressed on vinyl. The OG version with Elliot Randall's lead is Eddie VanHalens favorite lead. The original version I mean.
The concept that a later live version is "better" is flawed due to the fact that it wouldn't exist without the original. When a song is first written and developed, the band has to finalize it at some point for recording. There is no doubt that a later version reworked, reimagined, re-recorded, re-engineered, performed live or even covered by another band can be marvelous and magical. But nothing can surpass when I first heard this song in 1972 at our small town pool hall/ pinball palace on a 45 from an old jukebox and it caught my soul. Later versions can be great, but won't replace the original. Remember that those later live versions were developed after being played hundreds of times over several years. Imagine if that was the only music that was ever released.... We would have a lot less great music.
That's where we disagree. Too much of a jam session. For me it lacks the urgency of the original, which is a 11 out of 10 rock song to me. But I never saw Goucho as a great achievement either. So everyone got his/her favourite version. 😊

@@NicknLexreact to the whole album it's good because on some cuts they have my favorite amazing drummer who's playing on this cut dennis chambers (I'm a drummer) like you luv steely dan !

The arrangement is so sophisticated. Uptown sound!
Very jazzy but prefer other versions!
What an amazing live version!
are you cracked?
Number one! This was my first Dan song that I heard. Great!
If I recall from the liner notes, it was walter and Georg Wadenius on the solos. What a great version .
The drumming on this album is either Dennis Chambers or Peter Erskine, depending on the tour songs were selected from: they both shine, throughout.

Mister Wondrous, they both did Any World a long time ago, but I believe Charlie Freak has still to be introduced to them.
My favorite track on this album is “Book of Liars” . It’s so hauntingly beautiful.

Incredible nobody requested Marc Jordan, on the survival Album
The session musicians are Eagles, Toto and steely Dan and Larry Carlton at his best
Walter first solo: Zing second solo

I like this song a lot but I must say, I like this Live version a whole lot as well. Has more of a Jazz/R&B spin to it. I love it.
Mojo magazine just did big article on SD top 30 songs. Reelin’ was number 1. I prefer the live version, too.
"Reelin" fit into the rock genre at the time. It was "Do It Again" that got me hooked on their music.
The mind of Donald. Tremendous 😎👍

I'm a huge SD fan! I never heard this before. Nice tempo change ❤
Great version of this song! I do not remember those horn sections either! Thank JK!
I think you’ll find the first solo was Walter and Either Georg or Drew the second. The whole albums great.
WTG JK!!!!
Mucho Gracias for this...guys!
yeah this version is way superior. I prefer it
Basically a jam session, cool

We didn't pick this song it was picked by the sponsor😅

The Most played on AM FM rock … too much played IMO(studio version)
But this live version sounds fresh!!
George W on lead. Funny fact. This was never pressed on vinyl. The OG version with Elliot Randall's lead is Eddie VanHalens favorite lead. The original version I mean.
This is good, but the original is legendary.
So damn good man! ✌

‘95 music would be after Larry Carlton and, I think, before Jon Herrington
A few YES recommendations: "Homeworld", live version of "In the Presence of" ua-cam.com/video/X_KDXoMB5wg/v-deo.html and "That, that Is".
It's different, but it's not better than their original recording.
Still haven’t reacted to their last two albums. Get on it my god

Nope
Not as soulful but a good song.
Anyone who says this is better or as good as the original needs to get their ears checked. Give me a break. This is just pandering.
