  • Our combine caught fire the last day of soybean harvest last week. Thankfully, we were able to fix it and move on to corn. Breakdowns are a normal part of harvest!

Welcome to Peterson Family Farm. On this UA-cam channel, we plan to show viewers what happens on a real life family farm in Kansas. From working with animals, to planting seeds, to harvesting grain, to putting up hay, to fixing equipment, you'll get to see what farming is like! Our farm is a 5th generation farm started in 1882 by our great great grandparents. We grow wheat, corn, soybeans, milo, sunflowers, and forages and we feed about 1,000 head of cattle. To learn more about it, watch our channel intro video here: • Welcome to Our New You...

Hey guys we run a 9600 and a 9610 also. Check the wiring to your red tail lights above the chopper!!!!!!! Can’t stress that enough!! We almost had a fire because those wires were stripped bare because of the debris that whips inside the walker compartment. I highly recommend moving the chopper ahead so you can get underneath and access those wires easily. I had sparks and burnt straw shooting out of the chopper because of the wires shorting out. They were completely melted. So please check that!

I always carried a fire extinguisher, yes BUT I also always carried a 2 gallon hand sprayer filled with water and with a nice sized nozzle. In 37 years running combines I’ve never had to use a fire extinguisher but I’ve put out many small fires on the combine AND in the field with the sprayer. One time I saved what easily could have been an 80 acre cornfield fire with my little sprayer caused by a pickup pulling 400 bu. thru the field for 1/2 mile!

In our area of southern michigan we grow corn beans and wheat on a little over 5200 acres . We plant in April and start winter wheat harvest in late June then we plant double crop soybeans after the wheat. Then in Sept we start soybeans then corn then double crop soybeans. We custom farm and harvest as well so we harvest from Sept till mid December most years. This year has been a early harvest and weather has been decent so we might get done by mid November . Nice video stay safe and farm on my friends!

My uncle had a new John Deere tractor and was clearing and burning a fence row when he hit a tall stump and busted the hydraulic filters and the fire ignited the hydraulic fluid. The stump wedged under the tractor and he could not move it. No water sources were nearby and the fire department was 8 miles away. Standing by and watching a new tractor burn up was heartbreaking to say the least. I'll never forget the sight of the windows exploding from the cab! Thank God for insurance. Stay safe and don't forget to clean your equipment of dust and debris regularly.

Jack of all triads as my gramps would say is the life of a farmer. You need to be able to sort any thing as its to expensive to get a fitter out. What a crop Praise the Lord for this blessing of a good crop. Glad you got the fire out before it got bad. Great video

Glad everyone is safe and the combine is ok. If you haven’t had a chance yet, you should watch the video Mike Mitchell posted on the Ideal 9 combine they had that burned to the ground. Really scary stuff. Most people do not realize how dangerous of a profession farming is.

You are lucky, John Deere has a real problem with fuel lines. Rubber piece that seals down onto injector pump, then goes up to rail frequently goes bad. Sprays fuel on exhaust, even diesel burns on hot exhaust. If you own JD check that every time you get into or on the equipment. I have witnessed 4 tractor fires 3 combine fires in my life because of this. The farm I was on in California, had a funny saying nothing Burns like a Deere.
