1. Skip to 13:47 for how it works on guitar. You won't understand what's going on unless you watch how it works first though.
2. I didn't add fret numbers because this works for ALL position. I happen to play and demonstrate this example in A at the 5th fret. I don't want you to be stuck in one key/position. This works for all 12 positions. Print off the free PDF 12x and add position numbers to get a more solid understanding.
3. Learn your pentatonics and how the 3 and 2 group idea works first if this is too much for you. Here's the link ua-cam.com/video/EhgOQJNDVNA/v-deo.html

Superb lesson. Absolutely superb.
Am I the only one who is struggling to follow as a result of the absence of fret numbering on the diagrams? I'm quite quite willing to accept that this is a superb lesson covering some fundamental theory, but without knowing where on the guitar necks these boxes are positioned I cannot follow the theory. Am I missing something? Guess I shall just have to watch it over and over until the penny drops 🙂
Finally! Someone who can explain all aspects (fretboard, tension, C&R, chord tone targeting and pentatonic anatomy) all in the same study! Thanks Ricky. I was so close doing this myself and you filled in the final missing piece - targeting the 3rd of the current chord of the moment. Now I can combine scale and chord tone soloing strategies into one beautiful mix.
Been struggling with this for ages now I’ve got it. Thanks Ricky for another great lesson 👍🤟🎸
Great lesson, thanks Ricky!
Been playing 15 years. What a great way to unpack those notes👊🏼
Great lesson!!!
Great lesson!!! Many thanks
Excellent lesson, very well done! Thanks, Rick
Many thanks, Ricky! Great lesson with amazing information
Really appreciate this lesson Ricky ! Thanks !
Brilliant lesson, thanks very much. Straight to the point.
Ricky you are an amazing teacher 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Thanks a lot !!! 😃🎸💥
Ive been playing a long time. I was naturally gravitating to this method. But it's the first i've seen in a video. And it's brilliant. It solves the problem of needing to memorize triads too. It's absolute simple genius. This is how one should learn the guitar. Showing basic locations of intervals in the right context can open major doors. This was a lesson I won't forget for many years, and will show many people. I tried this tonight with some backing tracks that were even in minor, and I got all my minor 7 triads all over as well, which I'd been struggling with. No more memorization for traids. Raise your glasses to Ricky. Thank you my man, top shelf.
Merely brilliant! Thanks, Ricky.
Yes, another great lesson. Inspiring. Thank you.
Great thanks !
Omg, I'm an intermediate guitar player, and I know a decent amount of theory. But I've never made this simple connection for the location of the 4 and 5 thirds and sevens. I've been taking a windy road to get there. Thanks for the short cut. Most excellent! Thanks!
I'm gonna buy your lesson program, Ricky. I always learned so much from you. Thanks a lot
Love your lessons. Great job
thank you, this is bay far one of best lessons I ever heard. cant wait to check the other stuff. tnx
I'm 52, and this is the best explanation I've come across. You pull everything together. Thank you!
Great video, thanks for revealing this! From the start, I kept pausing the video to work out which of the CAGED pentatonic shapes each block belonged to, which really helped my comprehension. I was relieved when you finally pointed out how these “twos boxes” relate to the five pentatonic shapes.
this is so nice! Thank you very much!
Rick you are absolutely great!
Easy to follow and understand. Thank you for this content. Really useful! God bless you!!
The Man! When it comes to guitar teaching!!!😉👍🏻❤
That's a blinder Ricky.
One of my favourite lightbulb moments from a previous lesson AND in your book (lesson 67), .......this one just adds to it.
I can't thank you enough for the information you are conveying in such a digestible way.
Ricky’s the best teacher on the internet for perpetual beginners like myself. Best accent for certain! (Say it with me: “choohrd tooohnes”. 😄) A lightbulb lesson for me, too.
Amazing lesson!!!
Thanks 👍 Ricky, you're a 💎 Gem and an inspiration to all aspiring guitar players. " Bravo 👏".
Love your videos sir!!
Seriously Ricky... You are the GREATEST teacher EVER!
Making me a competent guitarist Despite myself, this Brooklyn kid LOVES ya Ricky.
Your lessons are clear and insightful and super appreciated. Eyup
Ok. I’m glad you showed the example in the end, it brought it together
wow , great lesson, I'm 53 and it's the first time I see such a mind opening tips , all things we know but in a fresh light, my compliments
Awesome lesson. Thank you!
Excellent lesson
Just stumbled in some how, but glad I did, great lesson. Subscribed for more.
wow very insightful, thank you
Thank you Ricky.
Thank you so much
Thanks Ricky.👍👍👍
Have staunch Christmas 🎄.. Ricky../ also I love that tune with the rat in the Leo da caprio and that’s a bloody hard tune to copy ,, the cop film with loads of stars in ..
GReat channel and great video man.
very good easy understandable lesson.
I already had a pretty good handle on the theory part before I watched the video, but I love you teaching style. And I have subscribed.
Good to find someone teaching these sub-groupings of the pentatonic scales. I call the note groups Vyo and Tria, ( 2 and 3 in greek ). Vyo + Tria = Penta Interestingly, I first called them 2 and 3, like you. But then the group numbers cause confusion when using numbers to label the individual strings. Have found only one other channel teaching this grouping.
Great usable guitar/music theory...and some great comedy ta-boot. Thanks.
Hit this one out of the park Ricky! Woke me the fook up mate! Something I never saw but it even explains the modes. The 3rd of the 4th. WOW! Thanks a lot bro...now my fingers will be bleeding all day! hehe. It's going to take a bit to apply but it's right in front of you for sure. Game changer for me!
Thx Ricky! Subbed! I now have the FreddyK RickyC ingredient ...adding to my vocabulary....
Thanks🎉🎉❤❤❤
Ha! I’ve been thinking this way for years only I use different terms: the “6pack” (whole step interval sub- group)and the “Extended Pair” (Whole +half step interval sub-group). I think of them as the sub-grouping found in the five pentatonic boxes. Ricky is the first guy I’ve seen who takes advantage of this perspective!
I got lost about halfway first time i watched. Was about to discard the video, but decided to give it one more try, and WOW! Suddenly everything made sense, completely opened my eyes. I realize I missed the part where you used a red pen highlighting the thirds of I7, IV7 and V7-chords, not the root itself. Huge thanks for this excellent concept!
Cadence down the stairs! Very cool lesson. Thank you!
I loved your explanation, especially the guitar hidden in the wardrobe lol, earned yourself a sub from me
Your explaining multiple concepts I've seen in the past and have been wanting to revisit. I'll be checking out your video playlist for sure. Thanks. I still get a little confused with the wrapping of the 6th string idea.
The scale notes on the E strings (6th and 1st strings) are of the same name. If the pattern extends to an E string consider the other E string as the same string and continue the pattern. Both E strings are in the pattern, increasing the number of strings in the pattern. Hope I've not confused you more on this :)
Can you smell that smokey smell? That was my brain exploding! Such a great lesson!
Great Video- I learned far more from this video, vs attending a 4 hour Robben Ford guitar soloing Workshop.
This might be a completely dumb question, but I don't see what actual frets we are looking at. If the first position one you drew has the root on the 5th fret, where are all the rest of these? Then the second drawing you did would put the root on the A string 8th fret, which doesn't make sense to me. Sorry, I can't follow. Any help>
Good job, Ricky! You summarized in 16 minutes what it took me 16 years to learn... 😂
"Let's just pick [a key] arbitrarily that's nice and easy..."
Me, a trumpet player: "Fuck yeah, B flat baby, here we go."
"...let's say it's in the key of A."
Me: "Goddammit."
😂 Dude! I do examples in Bb all the time...just not this time. Next time though!
😂
اتمنى ان تضع ترجمة بالعربية وكل الشكر لما تقدمه من جهد وامتاع
Brill just what I wanted to know
I have two guitars tucked away in my wardrobe! Along whith 12 boutique pedals. 😮
I’ll buy them from you if you want to sell!
@@paulrhodesquinn I'd divorce before I ever sold 'em. lol
This is exactly how I teach this.
W0W!

That video actually incorporated around 10 different lessons for me. Self-study revealed that for a MINOR blues key, the b3 is the target and one fret behind (neck direction) what was shown on the diagrams. The diagrams also showed how to locate the root note in any of the 5 minor pentatonic positions. I had to watch this many times to get a grip on the entirety of the lesson. If you don't get it right off, do some self-study, come back and watch it again. Keep doing that until you "get it".....
Is this in the book

👍👍👍
Play the thirds and 7th to simplify
My brain is still computing the info but I know with a firm certainty I found what I've been looking for
I got lost when you wrote the roman numbers on the fretboard. Are they new notes or numbers for the notes under it?
I’ve done lots of videos explaining the Roman numerals. They are labels for the chords in the key.
As JJ walker would say, this vid was dynomite!!!
Gosh he is good. Ricky you took that 500 pounds for a new guitar and you know it. GREAT VIDEO.
Gosh!

I was thinking about the great job you did in summarizing the lesson, but oh, well. I will encourage my kid to learn a trade that can’t be replaced by AI.
So Box 4 is C shaped, Box 5 is A shaped, Box 1 is G shaped, Box 2 is E shaped and Box 3 is D shaped. In relation to Chords? Or am I wrong. Please help
I couldn't understand really it's complex
What frets are all these tabs on- not one fret marked
The frets aren’t marked because this applies to the box patterns not positions. I said this example was in a minor. Print out the free PDF and mark the frets yourself but then you anchor the idea to those positions
M A E S T R OOOO !!!!!!!!
Great accent. Are you a Geordie?
..Ah, I see you have posted a correction on the LULU site for the spiral book. That is what I have been waiting for - thankx.
EDIT: For a very long time I have thought about this concept and never followed through on it. I always knew there were notes that let us hear the changes but I just didn't get it. This simple idea has been staring me in the face forever - that's what I get for being too lazy to just sit down and work it out! My brain works in patterns and your instructions are all about that. This is the kind of thinking that makes your content so good - thanks again bud.
Too many drinks and cadence down the stairs merited the upvote. Lol
Got your book and all fixed up with corresponding videos, Thanks Ricky Great Stuff 👍🎸
Brilliant!
Wonder how Lightnin Hopkins, Robert Johnson and all the other players from the 1930s to 50s survived without this.
It would have been helpful, easier to follow along, if you had included fret numbers
Read the pinned post
This is cool and all but you could also just use your ears and listen
I’d expect anyone who plays guitar to use their ears and listen. However, not everyone has a great inner ear and struggle to find notes by ear. Relying on playing by ear can take years while having a handy map of where to find the notes are can shortcut years of frustration.
Haha! I bought a guitar and hid it in the cupboard 😂😂😂
Got it? Octaves! Notes! Intervals! They all repeat! Pretty simple. Now go and play along with recordings for about four years.
eyup youth 'owat?
Is it just my ear that the 3rd played alone does not sound good.
Wait. Can you say that again?
Always trust an English bloke when he speaks guitar
I'm into the concept but you lost me half way through.
You might need to watch this first - ua-cam.com/video/EhgOQJNDVNA/v-deo.html
If you watch this video all the way through and watch how he applies it on the guitar at the end, it all becomes crystal clear.
@@rickysguitar Thanks Ricky, I will watch that and re-watch this video. Ill leave my notes here 🙂
@@emkay9508 Thank you yeah, i watched in it's entirety, but ill rewatch and see.
Hab jetzt Kopfweh ...
I’m confused lol…a little too much information too fast. Oh well I’ll keep trying to understand it
If this lesson is too soon try this one first ua-cam.com/video/EhgOQJNDVNA/v-deo.htmlsi=nPVnAYpUNwcAGel-
you lost me on 10:00
IV is referring to the 4th scale degree. 1, 2, & 3 are on the E string, but that drawing doesn't include a highlighted E string. I think that's why it was hard to follow.
V is the next scale degree after IV, and it's on the same string as the IV.
If you play the IV chord (or V for that matter), the 3rd in that chord is down one string and back one fret. His Triad lesson covers the R-3-5 really well.
Sorry i'm not as clear and concise as Ricky. He makes this stuff so much easier to understand than what's in my head! 😂
I'm sorry Ricky. I'm so confused.Could you play what you are talking about, please?
I play at the end of the video. However you may need to watch my 3/2 pentatonic video to understand what's going on first.
ua-cam.com/video/EhgOQJNDVNA/v-deo.html
@rickysguitar Thankyou for a superspeedy response Rick. Will do. PS I love it when you play solos. You're a fantastic lead player.
