I couldn't be happier or more proud to say, this is my car. That is my Lotus cortina. To be given the chance to work with everyone at The grand tour, to be so well looked after & meet Jeremy was a once in a lifetime opportunity. I would not hesitate to work with them again... Thank you for the nice comments to this video, it has been an emotional rollercoaster owning this car, but she is part of the family & I love her dearly. This experience has only gone to make the owning of this car even more enjoyable...
And what a fine Cortina it is
Just a shame they had to destroy another classic (allegro) to make this episode. Nice cortinas though!
What a bombshell of a car and what an experience! Thanks for sharing both with us!
Very fine car well done, but a bit high at the back end?
Did you insist that Hammond not drive it??
Was not emotionally ready for this episode... Completely caught me off guard.
You don’t need a thousand horsepower to have fun!
You can't use 1000 hp.
@@homeofthemad3044 In the latest cars, such as the F90 M5, E63 AMG S and the Porsche 911 Turbo, you certainly can.
Trendy State you can't cause of the weight
Home of the Mad exactly. Which is why I cannot stand some of the new musclecars which thinks it’s so cool to have 1000hp. The fact is that it’s too much to actually use and have fun with. I’d say around 500 is a sweetspot, depending on the model and weight and etc..
Hugo Nascimento damn straight. Many people seem to forget that.
my grandad used to own a ford cortine and my dad used it as a rally car to rally it through rocky trails
is it dead now the car
-cortine- *Cortina*
Ford has always been good at taking something desirable and making it affordable.
It's too bad they have given up on this.
I was hoping to own a new mondeo in the future, but now it seems that will not happen. But we do still have a Mk1 Cortina 1500 super. Ill just have to drive it.
Home of the Mad yeah maybe they should take the new Ford GT and put 4 doors on it and call it a cheap hatchback.
It saddens me no end to learn they are giving up on the Indian market. The Ford Figo was perhaps the only honest, blue-collar reliable, oldschool fun hatch with a modest but class leading 100hp/215Nm oil burner.
What about the Mustang?
RedPuma90 yeah good example. The newest model is very well priced for what you get.
I have more fun seeing this man in a 105hp car than a 1000+ HP hypercar
The Ford Escort Mark 1&2 weigh less than a modern small hatch back. They can have 1.6 and 2 liter engines making them the perfect light weight sports car.
The MK 1 is an amazing light weight sports car though MK 2 is cheaper and easier to find and just a little bit heavier but still light.
They are under 1000kg in weight which puts them in the same weight as a lightweight Porsche 911.
@@bighands69 The Mk1 had two engines, a 1200cc and a 1500cc kent engines, both inlet over exhaust, they had a three bearing crankshaft, which was their achilles heel.
The Mk2 had both these engines for a short time, though the 1200cc was for export, and the 1500cc only lasted a year.
They were replaced by the much better 1300cc and 1600cc kent engines, these were crossflow and had five bearing crankshafts.
There were other variations of the kent in the Mk2, 1100 escort engine and 1500cc crossflow, but these were export or made in country versions.
South Africa, had the 3L V6 Essex engine, which was built in South Africa by a privateer and sold through Ford main dealer, lucky bastards!
I had Mk1 1500cc super facelift, and a Mk2 1600 Deluxe.
I also had a Mk3 which started out as a 1300, but had various engines because I kept blowing them up, and a Mk4 2.3 V6.
@@stevenlawrence278 The 1500 was 5 bearing. One of my first cars was a 1963 1200 Fleet model in 1968, never had any problems with the bearings although in those days you were lucky to get 80000 miles out of an engine. The models available were - Standard (Fleet), Deluxe, Deluxe 1500, Super (1500), GT, Lotus.
I'd have more fun being lit on fire or attacked by bees than watching this.
The first song in case anyone is wondering:
Thomas Bergersen - Empire of Angels
Thank you so much for helping me find this song.
Thanks a lot, loved that song
I actually recently found the song, I love it, and one of the comments said Grand tour and sure as sh*t it was there!
Both the song and the car history makes me dropping my tears 😭
I mistook it for Star Sky.
I'm 24 and I've driven one of these on a track.
Absolutely hilarious to drive; the modern cars were going faster, but I guarantee they weren't having nearly as much fun, or felt they were going half as fast.
I also agree with Jeremy, the brakes are... plucky at best.
These blokes can never be replaced thank you for everything you have done for the car world now it is our time to continue what you guys started but no one is funny or even car loving as you guys thanks to:Jennifer, Captain Slowly and Mr Toad
My first car was a Mark 3 Cortina, 2.0L. It was a great car. I later had the Australian Mark 4 with the 4.1L 6 cylinder. Beat most V8's around but was very nose heavy. Had an incredible roar at full throttle. Truly a great show, I never thought I'd see Jeremy so emotional, but that would have been a hard announcement to make.
one of the best segments on the show yet
We bought our first Cortina in October 1962. Really great cars
4 people so far have voted this down. My guess is Chris Harris, Matt Leblanc, Rory Reid and a Vauxhall fan.
0 0 , yeah, there's 5 now. Chris Evans was late to the party ;-) .
There's fans of Vauxhalls? That's like being a "fan" of tap water, or tablespoons.
Rory Reid. Terrible bloke.
Who?
Nothing wrong with Chris Harris.
Both this episode and the Mongolia special were spectacular, some of the best ever i think...thank you for giving us decades worth of laughs. Top gear and The Grand Tour is like Seinfeld: the quality is so high that you can keep returning to it and discovering new things. I'm 42 now and LITERALLY grew up with you guys, the best motoring buddies IN THE WORLD. thanks again.
Jay Leno's Garage had a LHD Lotus Cortina on that channel a few years ago. Jay's head fabricator, Jim Hall, restored The Lotus Cortina from the ground up and owns it. Great stuff.
This clip is an example of why this show is the greatest thing ever!
The Lotus Cortina may have been able to rev to 8000 rpm if the engine was modified but it did not get to those revs in standard form! From the shot of the engine in this video that one looks modified.
I had one, a 1964 model, stock standard except for suspension mods and rallied it through the forests RAC Rally-style and used it hard on the road. It would reach about 120 mph on the probably optimistic speedometer, but it was a damned nice car.
I had one, 6500 max. That must have a steel crank and god knows what else
Took my driving test Ford Cortina GT 1966. Passed first time in bare feet! Vintage stuff indeed Jeremy.
I took mine in a 1976 2000 GT when I was 18. These days I'm 53 and have a 1975 1600 XL tucked away to play with.
I think it speaks to the magic of these old cars that even without the comical levels of horsepower they feel more alive and are still fast enough for fun
Yes - and to put the 105 hp into context, a typical mid-size family car at the time would have had 60-70 hp.
this is pretty much the most of an driving experience you can get out of a car. not thousands of horses, just a car that yourself has to operate, you have to shift, steer concentrate and be connected to the car, and THAT is for what us car guys live for. the ultimate driving experience
Jeremy looks like he is having the time of his life in that car. I wish I could buy one!
I bet you when wish you were born in 1940's or 1950's. If you were alive in 1960's, you would likely afford these cars, plus they were as rare back then compared to now.
Love this series , hope the Special Episodes to come are just as good
I wanna buy the tent 😫😭
Do it then
I checked Amazon for the GT Tent being for sale. Nope!
Ebay?
@@decodolly1535 not on Ebay. James did steal a rug from the tent
Wooaah how much joy this little car can give, awesome!
The sound that the Lotus Cortina makes is simply just great!
Love the taillights... after all these years, STILL love them.. Nice with a Lotus conversion too!
Is it a lotus conversion or a genuine original lotus cortina?
this and the capri are masterpieces,
The Zephyrs and Zodiacs are severely underrated too.
The MkIV may not be everyone's favourite aesthetically, but was a car well ahead of it's time (1966).
4 wheel disk brakes, power steering, IRS, adjustable steering column for starters...
Pretty quick car in the 60s. My mini cooper s couldn't hang on to one. Bought a MK1 1965 lotus Cortina in 1981 for1200 pounds. Still own it. Rog. Pacific sunset records.
My dad's first car was a mk2 Cortina he bought from his high school math teacher who imported it to Nova Scotia when it was new. Bright red and completely foreign. Hell of a first car.
Mark 1 lotus cortina what a sound i remember them when they came out lol
My Dad had a few Mk5 Cortinas, I loved that car and would love to own one
When Jeremy got emotional I couldn’t hold the eye fountains back :’(
My late father and late elder paternal uncle both had this car, my father had it in white and uncle had it in sky blue. I do remember that my father sold the car in 1990 because of carburetor issues and bought a white 1969 mark 1. My uncle had sold the car before to buy a 1974 Corolla. I do remember that they had a eye catching design with very distinct round tail lights and front bench seat.
Please show the one where Hammond swings a bat and sledgehammer at the car he hate as a child, and a Toyota MPV.
The Horrid Austin Allegro Estate and Toyota Picnic?
@@padraigodonnell6081 Yes. I like the contrast when Clarkson and May have happy memories with the Ford Cortina but Hammond having horrible memories about dreaming of riding Ford Cortina but instead, having to ride in the awful Austin Allegro Estate
My grandfather raced one of those and won many races with the thing, after an accident it had almost full fiberglass panels and was an absolute go-kart on track
Now imagine driving it at one of the world's scariest racetracks, with over 500 feet of elevation changes and wicked blind corners hit at over 140 miles per hour.
Bathurst.
The Cortina won it not just one but THREE YEARS STRAIGHT, including the very first Bathurst Homologation Special the 1965 Cortina GT 500
i love the grand tour and i love the old tog gear; I have been watching it since I was 3
I was watching since i was a sperm
Kershaw Silverado I didn’t watch that long, but I did watch through my moms belly, so 32 years ahahahs
I wanna be your Ford Cortina, and I will never rust
but it doesn't have a cupholder for the cup of hot coffe you like
JCC, the peoples poet.
was searching for this
Ah yes, an AM fan, me too. But that song was SHI- sorry UA-cam guidelines. But it was SHIT!
But I might go through a few ring gears and starter motors!
When you actually have a original Mk 1 Cortina from 62 (Model year 63) just standing waiting to have it's engine and interior restored. Can't wait to get it running.
The last 3 episodes deserves an Oscar...... mindboggoling
Just saw an mk3 yesterday, really good looking in orange.
Check out 'Cortina City' on UA-cam for Mk3's being resurrected.
I was there during the days between the Cortina and Sierra. Cortinas were literally everywhere.
Intrigued why the Genesis from 1962 had a '66 number plate and the wrong front sidelights? And the race car was an Airflow '66 as well. I ran a '66 Lotus Cortina first as a road car and then rallied it. I had Racing Services Twickenham rebuild the engine which was later transferred to my Escort Twin Cam rally car. The word 'fun' doesn't describe it! MAGICAL
The first car shown is a 1966 Standard (Fleet) model, ie cheaper than a deluxe, and all the items on it are correct inc separate sidelights. My dad had a 1963 Standard model which I bought off his firm in 1968. Great cars.
What was the music used at the beginning? It was just perfect for the introduction
I believe it's from Two Steps from Hell, but I don't remember the name of the track.
Imho this is the coolest car review on the interweb ever. It gives me goosebumps every damn time.
Just a rolling body(stock model) here in nz goes for 7k.. These are a goldmine here!!
It's all good revving your cars arse off but 145mph in the 60s is insane
Especially with only a 4-speed gearbox!
No one ever got 145 mph out of a cortina unless it was on Santa pod.
I love you gyus for continuing the trio even without top gear
Beautiful machine and more than the sum of its parts!
The garage on our estate has a mk2 Savage in for work! The noise is something else, especially as it sporting triple IDF 42 carbs, with a large ss exhaust system! they said its made 188hp👌🏼
"Oversteer Mentalist" 😂
What a beauty!
The Cortina Mark 1 and Mark 3 along with the Escort Mark 1 are the most beautiful cars Ford UK ever produced.
The grand tour is amazimg!
Was
I enjoyed that clip, just saying, carry on everybody.
Both cars are late versions of the mk1 the first one is a Fleet model most likely a 1200 they sold as a company reps car and the other one well we all know that one. In 1965 i bought a second hand 63 1200 ambassador blue 2 door fleet I soon decided to spice it up so I fitted a1500 lump tuned above GT spec polished ported head comp clutch 5 1/2"J wheels but still had drum brakes so fitted comp linings that helped a bit it went like the clappers great times. 2019 I now have a restored 66 4 door 1500 deluxe in spruce green with off white flash 6"minilights . Again GT spec lump its not as quick as my old one by a mile but it still gives me a big grin every time I drive it I just love that car its a drivers car. I think if I could have another classic car it would be a CAPRI I am 73
Quite a bombshell at the end there 😭
I think the benchmark affordable sport saloon of that era is the Alfa Romeo Giulia. More power from it’s 1600 ccm engine, better aerodynamics and a 5-speed gearbox.
And don’t even get me started on the fabulous Sprint GT Coupé by Bertone.
I actually cried while watching this episode 😭😭😭
Same here buddy
@@krishpatel4927 yup
No body will ever forget The old tog gear. we love you!
We love Tog Pear.
If I had to name my tog three shows tog gear would definitely be in there.
Jeden z najlepszych odcinków jakie widzialem! 😮
cant beat those twin carburetor's roar
Back in the day...('75) been there, done that! THE most fun car I ever owned!
Bought it for $300, and sold it for $500 after a year. Do you know what they're worth today?
Clarkson has aged 40 years in the last 5.
Britan forever!
Unless that 'lotus mk 1 was a rebuld......it has the early non- airflow front panel on it...and if it is a D reg...the glance at the dash is wrong too.....a D a reg would have the later design dash and on the Lotus the drivers binacle and 4 clocks in the centre of the dash were mounted in a brushed alloy facing.....the front sidelights and indicators on a D reg were encased in the front grill......not separate as on that one.
Also i believe the box and twin cam engine cane out of the Lotus Elan.....the lotus also had alloy bonnet....boot and both doors....plus extra bracing in the boot and radius arms on back axle.....5 1/2j steel rims too on wheels if memory serves.....often wished i had a lotus.....but i do still have a 4door. 1500gt version.....with 1600E engine and box in it as the original 1500 pre-crossflow was too far gone to repair.........great cars....one of fords master pieces.....yes they rusted.....but all cars did back then......bar volvo.....but they are another story....lol
The Spruce Green car at the start is a 1966 basic "fleet" model designed for the travelling salesmen.
My dad had one, which I owned afterwards - really great car for its time.
I was the second owner of that very vehicle in 1971. Just dug some old photo's out and the images in the film match as it was in 1971.
The Cortina, Sierra Cosworth, and Mondeo are the holy trinity of the most fun, and affordable cars Ford has ever made for Europe. Wish we had the real deal over here in the U.S.
The closest thing they had over here was the fusion sport, but then again it was only a power boost.
Cortina Savage. Look it up.
You missed the Escort and Focus - both cheaper and more fun than most Mondeos!
Almost to a million subscribers! Keep up the excellent work! If you see this comment, no rush but i cant wait for season 4!
Where can I find a video of the wheel lifting up?
Videos and dvd s of Jim Clark show wheel lifting. Rog. Pacific sunset.
In 1962 the US was loaded with fast Fords . Hot Rod Lincolns even .
This episode got me good.
I thought Jeremy was describing himself towards the end! 😂
This was a very good episode!!! Poor Hammond...
Why?
Well during the tv episode Jezza and James both had the Cortina growing up and poor Hammond had something else that wasn’t quite as cool.
Cortina was awesome I liked the newer models more than the mk1
Which grand tour episode was this
I probably had more fun in the back seat of a stationary Mk1 Cortina than Jeremy had at Caswell.
Had a few birds in the back seat also.
Damn.. thats a nice car
Is the tachometer supposed to be sideways like that?
Yes, so it's easier to see the needle when you're at the top of the rev range.
I loved the episode but surely you should be including Escorts
No one gives em credit enough
The film was about the saloons. The Focus is the Escort's successor so technically while the Focus is selling (though not exactly well right now), it's bloodline still lives on.
The escort was a hatch, not a saloon - the episode is on the ancestry of Ford standard saloons
@@levipartridge2790 Technically, Mk.1 and 2 Escort's were saloons. Later ones were badged as the "Orion". But you are right, that is a different line of Ford, despite the similar body styles.
This is why there is confusion I'm guessing.
@@levipartridge2790 my MK1 Escort RS1600 was a saloon. (Wish I still had it 😆)
Jeez that's a beautiful car never heard of the Cortina. We didnt have this in the U.S. I think i like this than the Mustang
You did..it was marketed under the " English ford line".... was raced in the USA too...
@feydespiel. No way I we had the ugly ones. Sporty one we had was a Escort GT
A smile ear to ear.
available on amazon prime
A Ford with subpar brakes is a new one for me... The movie Dutch set the tone for me as a kid - "You can't beat a FORD for good brakes!" Look that scene up and laugh your asses off. Good stuff.
Who can't smile watching these videos?
Please post the video that you put togethet for the end of the old format era. I want to cry once again.
Yaknow what i feel, i feel the subtle ae86 spirit in that Cortina
What music is used at the beginning
Who knows what was the song starting from 6.29 in episode 14?
Whats with that front grill on the early car? I have never seen a MK1 Cortina or Consul with that exact grill!
It's a "fleet" model. As basic as you could get for the reps!
@@theoriginalwallace Well I am pushing 60 years old and travelled all over the Uk when I was young and had a driving job when I was 20 and I have never seen that grill on the roads in the Uk ever!
Its the Cortina Standard, or Fleet model as its now labelled - my Dad had one new in 1963 Ambassador Blue, which I owned from 1968, great car. No carpets just rubber floor covering, no padded dash top and I believe washer jets were optional!
Wow 😱😲😲,, this car is so cool 🙌🙌❤❤👍👍😎😁
My car... thank you : )
This shows that low number HP cars can be more fun than a fast car!
Does anyone else notice the body lines are similar to a Falcon? Like the tailight areas
Thats probably because this is basically the European equivalent of the Falcon. Right the way down to it being the base of its own sporty coupe: the Capri.
@@jehnsehymere6092 Thats what I was thinking. It is cool how these are so similar in that way.
and then they made the ford escort ! = that out ran most on world rally champion ! so i had a escort twin cam 135 bhp = 115 mph and fast as spinning the wheels 1st - 2nd - 3rd and killing v8 cars up to 90 mph easy = LSD - big fuel pump - super electronic ignition and gold lodge spar plugs - twin 40 mm webers tuned extractors what a fuel sucker it was = got a turbo subaru now even better !
Gee... Now.I want one
In NFS Shift 2 Unleashed
Back then 1.6na with load of rev produce 105hp. Things changing fast
It only needed 105 bhp to wipe nearly everything else off the road at the time, being so light - 1 cwt lighter than the BMC 1100. you could have it with 4 engine options, 105, 115, 122, and 143 bhp, the last gave 0-60 in 6.5 secs.
God save the Ford Motor Company!
I bought a 1962 esate it was my first car.Boght her in the early 1972
