Some things I would like to mention is that the 844 does actually have a higher top speed on level track. Something did happen with 844 in this video, but I’m not asking for a rematch. 844 also had to slow down much sooner because it weighs more than double the Mallard, Mallard being 104 tons and 844 being 223 tons. I’m just happy this race happened even if my all time fav engine lost the race.
Basic engine physics: -Larger loco with larger wheels= longer acceleration rate -Larger loco with large wheels at high momentum= more speed -Larger loco with a lot of momentum= Longer stopping distance And whatever happened to 844, I'd say she blew her steam chest. The wide open throttle with probably the most minimal of valve cutoff increased the steam chest pressure which was too much.

In the end, 844 would’ve won, but it exceeded it’s max speed (mallard did the same thing on its speed record run) all 844 had to do was exceed the limit of Mallards speed and hold it, but that’s not how the program works in the game. Mallard ran 126 in real life, but they had a problem with overheating the 3rd cylinder, infact right after hitting 126 they had to shop the mallard due to damage
The 844 takes longer to speed up and slow down because of how much heavier it is. This test also shows that the 844 is capable of higher speeds than mallard is, but since it was designed to withstand a max speed of 120mph it cannot run at those speeds safely.
Shame train simulator doesn't have Class J #611, as she was the pinnacle of American steam technology and was designed to achieve speeds similar to Mallard.

The cylinder didn't burst, 844's steam chest blew. The pressure in the cutoff valve built up because of the minimal throttle input and caused the valve to blow. The 844 would have been fine if the Steam pressure was lower.

What looks like happened with the 844 is the packing got loose and started leaking steam out of the Cylinder heads. This happens when there is too much pressure to the cylinders and causes steam leaks. The 844 would have easily beaten Mallard and in real life it actually could but Mallard still holds the record.

The 844 was “smoking” ( its steam ) because it burst a cylinder head from excessive speed ( around 120 MPH ) the safety valve is on the top of the engine and that goes off at 300 PSI ITS NOT SMOKE!!!

Due to the tremendous power you put them on, 844 had to build alot of steam pressure due to the amount of power set, and the strength of it, once the 844 started to steam up from the pistons that was the steam pressure being relieved as the steam blow down powered up the pistons, it kicked up its speed.
Actually, it is very likely that many American steam locomotives have broken Mallards speed record, not because of superior engineering, but because in designing the engines the Americans have a lot less restrictions in every facet. IE the Pennsylvania Railroad T1.

you know what i've been meaning to tell this for a long time about why the American trains are failing to win against the British locomotives. It's because the American trains are alot heavier than the British locomotives and take a longer time to stop, while the British trains are light and can stop in just a few seconds while American trains take minutes to stop. This is why i've been calling all your races unfair and i think you should change your rules so that they have to cross a certain point instead of whoever stops first is the winner.

Yeah 844 holds the record as being one of if not the fastest steam engines in history with a offical record of 126.7mph and a unoffical record of around 140ish mph. Sadly the engineers couldnt push these babys to their max because of railroad limits.

The Up 844 blew her piston Safety Valve because of the steam pressure not being released so the valve burst, and started losing to much steam in turn she slowed do enormously. I'm surprised that her piston Safety was the only thing that burst, with all that pressure her boiler safety could have burst and her boiler would have exploded. Just being realistic here.

The cylinder didn't burst, 844's steam chest blew. The pressure in the cutoff valve built up because of the minimal throttle input and caused the valve to blow. The 844 would have been fine if the Steam pressure was lower.

The 844 had stimulated to much damage to its pistons and cylinders due to excessive speed or going over 140 mph and since it had stimulated so much damage its stuff to make it work started to fail like its steam valve
844 wasn’t broken it was venting as most steam locomotives do when they have a certain pressure

What looks like happened with the 844 is the packing got loose and started leaking steam out of the Cylinder heads. This happens when there is too much pressure to the cylinders and causes steam leaks. The 844 would have easily beaten Mallard and in real life it actually could but Mallard still holds the record.

The 844 was “smoking” ( its steam ) because it burst a cylinder head from excessive speed ( around 120 MPH ) the safety valve is on the top of the engine and that goes off at 300 PSI ITS NOT SMOKE!!!

Well, UP 844 has 3,500hp but is twice as heavy. Mallard has 2,400hp but is smaller by far. This actually was a pretty tight race.

So if you guys don't know since the 844 was designed for a max on 120mph and she was modeled that if it went 140mph or higher then her pistons and cylinders would start to stimulate damage and when to much damage was caused by the amount of speed the 844 was going at her safety value, packing glands and every thing else started to fail so she slowed down (I only know this cause the man himself smokebox which is the one who coded,modeled,and designed the 844 for this game said what I said but shorter so yes to the comments that say her safety value maybe to burst but failed she did not release steam from her pistons if that was they case she wouldn't have slowed down)
The next race should be a bunch of E2's. That'll be cool, for sure! :D

Due to the tremendous power you put them on, 844 had to build alot of steam pressure due to the amount of power set, and the strength of it, once the 844 started to steam up from the pistons that was the steam pressure being relieved as the steam blow down powered up the pistons, it kicked up its speed.
Hell I remember tearing through the east coast in a prr t1 with 32 heavy weight Pullman at 157 mph for 30 miles non stop
Actually, it is very likely that many American steam locomotives have broken Mallards speed record, not because of superior engineering, but because in designing the engines the Americans have a lot less restrictions in every facet. IE the Pennsylvania Railroad T1.

NeilTheBoxTankEngine the only reason Mallard is the fastest in the first place is because it was going down a damn hill! Plus the center cylinder failed while it was doing it. Union Pacific 844 on the other hand was designed for 120 mph but only got up to 110 mph when it was on fast mail trains back in the 40's 50's and 60's
you know what i've been meaning to tell this for a long time about why the American trains are failing to win against the British locomotives. It's because the American trains are alot heavier than the British locomotives and take a longer time to stop, while the British trains are light and can stop in just a few seconds while American trains take minutes to stop. This is why i've been calling all your races unfair and i think you should change your rules so that they have to cross a certain point instead of whoever stops first is the winner.

I don't like mallard. Mallard wins at everything just because it is light which makes it stop faster. if this were a drag race where there were a finish line, Mallard would get obliterated. I would just love to see Mallard lose completely in a drag race against 844 for my satisfaction.

The Up 844 blew her piston Safety Valve because of the steam pressure not being released so the valve burst, and started losing to much steam in turn she slowed do enormously. I'm surprised that her piston Safety was the only thing that burst, with all that pressure her boiler safety could have burst and her boiler would have exploded. Just being realistic here.
I really think there should be a bridge to pass under as a finish line and not the first to stop.
Hey, you've learnt how to say Mallard this time. Well done. That was a good test, both the same, what the point in doing a test with different settings from the real things is I don't know. I don't know much about how simulators work by why wouldn't you give them both 100% power? Why the 135%? Also, when referring to which locomotive is the best you really need to be comparing them doing what they were built to do ..... they were built to pull trains.
