The Petco in Williamsburg VA is amazing. Most of the aquatic employees are college students studying marine biology. So they love there job. Super helpful!!!!
Same here in mid Ohio, Findlay Ohio that is , they do an excellent job and the tanks are prestine and well kept and the fish are well taken care of .

Sandra Brabant Petco does provide all the aupplies needed to care for our animals :) It's likely she prefers her own gravel vac to the Aqueons we use in-store. Even if we run out of store use items, we will shelf pull or get them from another Petco.

At my location the petco is good but you would see a dead fish but the other animal are good even the geckos with fat tails and colors live food to. Once a week mainly guppies but a few platys

I work at petco and i agree. The aquatics specialist is a very underpaid job 😅 Cashiers make 11. Aquatics specialists make 10.50.
If she ain't manager/supervisor, they need to promote her if they want that store's credibility to raise.

They’re finally working on not selling harmful pet products for example, cedar bedding, really small cages, dog and cat food with HUGGEE amounts of chemicals in them.
Also, they need a bit of time I guess. You can’t just expect to change stores nationwide in a snap!

I’m actually the aquatics specialist at my local Petco. I wish our tanks could look this good but our tank and sump system is so outdated and there are scratches in the glass that make it nearly impossible to get all the algae out. I pray that next year they update our tanks so I can make sure those fish are happy and healthy ❤️

@@Mathias-so8rw nope. Never got new tanks. I left the place due to toxic management. I was being screamed at daily and being harassed by a single manager and I contacted HR and they did not a thing about it. So I got sick of the trauma and left.

It’s not hard to get hired- you could walk in and ask for an application right now, they never have hiring ads up but will give you an app. I work in a small pet shop. It’s a LOT of work and when people walk in they tend to take in only the bad. For instance we sell feeder mice, we just got in a new batch and one passed away. It’s normal. Someone saw and left a nasty review about it. Typically petsmart and petco want things done their way and you will get in trouble if you mention anything related to animal care, and even if you try to talk to customers about correct animal care you can lose your job. For instance telling someone a critter-trail isn’t ideal for their hamster or a wire wheel. Find a small pet shop near you- where they don’t mind if you give customers advice.
That's way easier said then done.

This makes me happy to see. Reminds me of when I used to work at Walmart years ago in the Pets dept. I took care of all the live fish, doing their water changes, scrubbing the glass and replacing the filters. That's how I got sucked into the hobby. Now I have my first saltwater tank, 125 gallons. Decided to upgrade after I managed my 40 gallon freshwater for 8 years.
If only Walmart took care of their fish like this.....

Tbh the local Wal-Mart has better looking tanks then our petco and petsmart.
I got offered a job at Wal-Mart by the manager because I pointed out several easily fixed problems with their tanks and spent 30 minutes or so educating him on easy ways to take preventative to keep from having problems. It was too horrible not to say something and sad he couldn't get an employee that wanted to be the fish person.

Fish deserve respect. so glad they are being looked after so well by a caring member of staff 🐠 She is an asset to the animals and the shop.
When I worked at Wal-Mart, we had the very angry customer demanding to talk to a supervisor. She thought it was animal abuse that the fish only got fed one time every other day. She demanded we feed them three meals every day. When asked if she had fish the customer said yes. So the TPTB in their unimpressed wisdom, agreed to the new feed schedule. There was many employees that had successful tanks tried to talk TPTB out of it. Two weeks later the same customer came in to buy our new fatten up fish. For some reason she can only keep them alive for about a month.

The store I frequented fed once a day or once every other day. The goal is to keep the fish alive and healthy not overfeed and upset the balance of the system.

Most do. Just depends on who is running the department, and what they know. If they hire someone who is in or knows the fish keeping hobby, they will do everything and anything to keep the dept. in tip top shape. If they don't, you get average or below average work.

at my local one a girl tried to say a brown common crayfish cost "The same as the blue one" [20 dollars] i tried with all i had not to say WHAT i was shocked because there was literally a sign not far saying they were like two or three dollars! i cant believe i can say i know more about this person's job than they did but seriously... tryin to rip me off...

I have not been to a Petco where it was kept dirty. I live in Brooklyn and usually go to the Petco on Broadway in Manhattan NY and they are phenomenal with their up keeping.

There is one in Atlanta like this. I told one of the fish guys there that their store was on point. He said it was always rated the second best, with first being in NYC.

The Petco off of Pleasant Hill in Duluth is the one I was talking about here, and it is right next to Atlanta Aquarium, so you can go there as well for interesting fish. Also, the one in Conyers is decent.

The Sheridan Wyoming petco is very clean all tanks and cages taken care of great store. Plus the aquariumist is very knowable about all the fish or any problems I have.
Good to see this video. You can definitely tell the chain pet stores that have true aquarists working at them. Although I normally buy all my fish at my local mom & pop fish store, I always try to support the big box pet stores that have good fish sections. The zebra danios I got recently for the 5 gallon aquarium sitting on my desk came from a Petco in Emeryville, CA (not far from Pixar Animation Studios) because I was so impressed by the quality of that store's stock and the condition of their tanks. So glad that you made this video. We need to encourage the stores that are doing well and offer constructive criticism to the stores that are struggling a bit.

My mom and pop aquarium shop closed a few years back, I was in that place all the time. Now my options are PetSmart or Petco or online. The main employee from the mom and pop store works at my local PetCo now so that is my spot. He really knows his stuff and keeps the fish there in great condition. My local PetSmart on the other hand is staffed by teenagers who don't know anything about aquariums/fish care.

If you don't support your local stores they can't improve their store you should never spend money at a corporation pet store only the small stores
@@theaux1168 No, I always call out the chain pet stores on what they are doing wrong. There is plenty wrong with certain chain pet stores. Look at the videos on my channel and you will see how I have taken Petsmart and Petco to task.
Having said that, I will also point out where individual shops in those chains are working hard to change things. I contact the corporate offices to not only complain about poor standards & practices, but also to point out when one of their stores does something right that should be adopted as company-wide policy. That's the only way things are going to change and these stores are going to get better.
The Petco near me is always as clean. Almost every time I have gone in there they are cleaning the tanks. The employee also was using a python to clean them. Not sure if the store payed for it or if she purchased it on her own. She is also very knowledgeable about the fish.

I’ve seen both good and bad Petcos and PetSmarts, depends on who’s working there if the managers are knowledgeable they teach their workers the proper way to care for animals. A Petco by my fiancé’s house was horrible and I brought up the condition of their stores reptiles and why they can’t cohab 3 ball pythons and their humidity was 20% and temp was 120 and the lady got super pissed that I brought up that they’re suffering and she’s like we know how to take care of our animals we don’t need customers to tell us how to do our job. However, the Petco at my house is phenomenal! Always has the best care for their animals and makes sure they are living in the proper conditions. Just depends on who works there

im an aquatics specialist at my local petco and its honestly a team effort to get everything looking nice. i can tell the store in this video is newer, because my store doesnt look this good, no matter how much we scrub it. trust me. at my store, you could spend hours cleaning and scrubbing (and i do. trust me. algae is horrible), and it still doesnt look this good. its a constant battle to get the tanks looking pristine.
we are (well, at least i am) also always looking in the tanks, monitoring for signs of illness or aggression between the fish, as well as removing and dead fish. there are days i find myself pacing back and forth looking at each and every tank, all 1,000+ gallons, making sure it looks as good as possible.
we really do need dedicated people in these stores trying to make a difference.
(and honestly? i was hesitant to open this video from my recommendeds because i thought it was going to be negative).

Hi! I am the aquatic specialist at a oregon store and I tell you what, it is the hardest job in the whole store. I have graval vac, algae scrub, water change, wipe glass, many more for 90 fish takes, and help customers all over the store in 5 hours A WEEK. It's a hard job especially with poor management.
I work as an aquatics specialist too. On top of the hard work it takes to secure the actual wellness of the fish and make the tanks look great all district managers would see is that bit of algae growing on the rocks and give me a low score. I hated that!

Went to my local Petco to get a new tank (after breaking my 65, ended with a 29g for $29) and was really impressed with their tanks. They were clean and clear and the fish looked active and healthy. Petco on Redwood in SLC.
Thank you for giving well deserved praise to this responsible woman. Petco at the University Hills shopping center in Denver, has a filtration system which has way too many breakdowns, It recently had a massive fish die off. Evidently, they could not get someone in to fix the system for nearly a week, and Petco corporate did nothing about. The staff in store were desperately trying to help those poor fish. Also, the fact that Bettas (warm water fish) are kept in unheated cups and look lifeless as a result, tells one that it’s all about the dollar, not the well-being of the animals.
I can’t buy much fish in my petco in NY... guppies, platies and Molly’s always sick or if they look ok to buy will last a week 🤦🏻♂️ so sad

When I worked at petco I was the aquatic specialist there. And my tanks and fish looked amazing I loved it. And my coworkers where amazed how it was when I worked there. I would have customers ask for me and sales have increases. Now when I left them. And I go there to visit and get fish I had to stop cause the people that took my place where neglecting them.

I think this is the Petco on 1960 just north of 290. This is one of the nicer Petcos in the area. I've purchased fish here and most are still kicking years later.

You still have to remember that while one petstore may provide excellent care to its animals, the animals still come from awful breeding facilities or are stolen from the wild

Aquatics that has true aquarists in them are always a joy. I love seeing what other partners are doing with their department. Petco's aquatics maintenance demands are extensive, and everything if everything is done according to plan, this is the result. Having an Aquatics section that's perfectly clean with fat and happy fish is one of the most prideful things about working there.

Nice. It makes me happy to see fish kept well. I did notice that my PetSmart took all the Bettas to a warm area when our weather was really cold. So, some are getting better.
That's a newly remodeled store. I worked at Petco few months ago and they are in the process of remodeling the busier stores. Mainly upgrading a lot of the equipment to newer stuff. Not saying the people are doing bad, but the reason a lot of Petco and PetSmart tanks look so bad is because the systems they have are old and outdated and inefficient. That's why it's mainly the smaller stores that have the bad tanks and the bigger ones have the better stuff.
There is no such thing as outdated equipment. I still use a undergravel filter and everthing is pristine. It all comes down to laziness and maintenance.
The sad truth is that many places hire non experienced employee that require more care. They hire just anyone Just to fill in the spot. But the ones that work hard in there jobs expect even more out of them. And then the ones that don't work hard managment do say nor expect more. Thats why hard workers would later stop caring or stay long in the job place they work for.

Great video. Thanks for posting. I hate when people rip on the chain stores like they're all horrible. Some of my best cichlids came from my local PetSmart because I know the fish crew there is full of fellow fish nerds.
Tbh it depends on the individual store and how much experience the fish specialist has. We have two Petco and two PetSmart. I only go to one Petco bc she knows what she's talking about and is very knowledgeable. The specialist at the other Petco literally said "these shrimp are all pregnant so they're going to die in a couple weeks. Oh well." And handed me the bag.
I don't really go to one if the petsmarts because it's super out of the way and try don't care about bettas. The other PetSmart has multiple fish specialists that are super super knowledgeable and when I notice a betta with dropsy or sbd and I bring it to them, they immediately get it into a hospital tank. The pet store a couple towns over (don't remember which one) has nasty tanks and their "specialist" doesn't know shit about what they're talking about"
My local Petco here in central Maine is awesome too. Great people, tanks are super clean, hospital tanks, all the tanks are full of live plants, knowledgeable employees that are super friendly, etc. Petsmart on the other hand is quite the opposite.
Where is this.? This is one of the few petcos that take care of their fish. I worked for the flagship store in nyc, and we had a great guy there. But 90% of the other petcos were horrible.

Once in a petco store I was getting a fish tank with my little sister and my mom and we found GRASSHOPPERS IN THE FISH TANK!!!!!!!! LIKE SERIUSLY THE LADY TOOK THEM OUT BUT DID NOT PUT THEM OUTSIDE AND PUT THEM ON THE GROUND YES I SAID ON THE GROUND IN THE STORE!!!!!!!!

My petco takes amazing care of the fish the salt water are very bright and the fresh are very active and the tanks are very clean.
That's the best care I have seen in a pet store... Mine are all 5 gallon tanks with water nothing else. And overstocked. And no filters or heaters
Shout out to petco when I went their to get new fish they were SUPPER smart, helpful and new every single awnsore to my questions and they recommended better fish food, and gave me a free fish for talking to them and buying some
My Petco by my college is super good too with their tanks. I have 3 black skirt tetras that are doing super well and were obviously taken care of in store. I love going there and checking out new little guys that come in
Fin rot, dropsy, snails and mites, fleas, ticks, and other joyous things at Petco.
This store might as well be a different company from the Petco where I live. The tanks are always messy and the employees know very little about keeping fish. I was once there buying supplies, and a mother was buying her son his first tank. The worker told her that a 20gal was big enough for an Oscar, they were easy and only needed basic flake food and, no surprise, gave her the line “fish only grow big enough to fit their tank”.
Our Petcos here in Dallas, TX look pristine as well. The PetsMart, not so much.
I worked for PetCo in Louisiana and I loved it. The company was great to work for. They staff enough employees per shift so that you CAN keep these habitats clean AND paid above min wage (here it’s just over $7.50, they paid $9 starting out).
Also just a tip, never pay store price for an item. Online prices are usually always cheaper and they will price match their own site! So pull up the item on your phone, show it to the cashier and bam! Bought it for a lot cheaper lol

The lady at my local petsmart is the manager and does the same she even brings the sick ones home and heals them she will hide the bowls behind the bigger tanks and has signs saying fish should not go in bowls

I used to be a manager of the fish department and Reptile department at Petco and I LOVED my job.

I have only been to a handful of Petco with excellent fish care. I am thankful there is one in my area that is awesome and the workers go well and beyond their normal protocols. They do water tests and teach you the dos and donts.
I came up on a fish lady the same way. Should be titled when you're trying to come up on the fish lady at Petco Petsmart. LOL did you get her number LOL.
I used to work at Petco and became a small animal specialist and a reptile specialist there. I worked there for 2 years but eventually quit because I didn’t like how bad the animals looked. They were not taken care of very well and I was the only one caring for them. I medicated them, fed them and clipped there nails but it was too much for me since nobody wanted to help me at all. The guinea pigs nails were so curled and long and whenever I tried to clip them my would yell at me telling me to stop and to watch the register. Also, whenever there was a sick fish or a reptile or a hamster. Man, they wouldn’t do anything. It was all hectic. I love animals but...I was getting tired of seeing them in bad conditions so I had to leave because it upsets me.

One great thing about living in Australia, there’s not one shop that can stop US FROM RECORDING IN THERE SHOP, DUE TO ITS A PUBLIC PLACE, ALL OUR SHOPS ARE, win win
Their store is so nice because it’s a newer one. My store is old and slowly rotting. We had to shut down four tank walls due to all the weight causing it to lean and since it’s rusted we can’t afford it breaking and hurting someone. We have put in so many work orders to get the store fixed but corporate won’t do it. Ick is something that is hard to prevent when those fish are in the small tanks so all we can do is try to treat it and inform customers that we can’t sell them certain fish out of tanks with ick. We do our very best for our fish and other animals. If anyone has a problem don’t take it out on us, go complain to corporate.

If I'm ever in Texas I'm stopping at THIS Petco and not only will I be buying new fish and supplies but I'm gonna let her know she does a PHENOMENAL job.
Man, thank you for showing that even Petco can have nice displays and provide good care. It comes down to the individual employee... and I guarantee they aren’t compensated fairly for that hard work.
