    "Look at that subtle off-white coloring. The tasteful thickness of it. Oh my God, it even has a watermark!"
    Christian Bale's a treasure. This is when he went from a supporting actor to a leading man.
    Fun Fact: In 2013, Funny Or Die recreated the "Hip To Be Square" scene with American Psycho With Huey Lewis And Weird Al (2013). Huey Lewis himself played the Patrick Bateman role and 'Weird Al' Yankovic was the Paul Allen role. In the scene, Lewis discusses the film, its controversial reception, Christian Bale's acting, and its effect on Bale's performance as Batman. Rather than listening to a song, Lewis pops in the American Psycho (2000) DVD, and at one point he points to the television while discussing Bale as Bale is shown pointing at the stereo discussing Lewis. It ends with Lewis killing Yankovic saying "Try parodying one of my songs now, you stupid bastard!" The video ends with the song "I Want A New Duck," a parody of the Huey Lewis and the News song "I Want A New Drug."

    It's funny since this movie was originally panned by critics and audiences and years later it finally got the praise it deserved. The film also gave us plenty of meme material!

    Based on the novel, it's all meant to be going on in his head. Maybe he committed some of the murders or maybe he didn't. The movie is actually a satire of Wall Street. The ending monologue is basically saying that whether he actually killed those people or not, he's no different from the other guys he hands out with. Nobody is really listening to each other. They're all so self-absorbed. That's how the blonde woman at the bar can "mishear" what he's saying. The movie is told from Patrick's point of view, and there are hints early on that he's not a reliable historian. By the time he's being chased by the cops, it's clearly a hallucination. But whether the whole movie itself is or isn't "real" isn't important. It's trying to tell a greater truth about Wall Street in the 1980s. Part of it is that if you're rich in America, you can almost get away with anything. Yes, he probably is hallucinating and is mentally ill, but everyone else in his world acts exactly the same, so maybe they are, too. It's designed to result in more questions than answers, but the theme of 1980s Wall Street is definitely there.

      I read it completely as an allegorical critique of the capitalist system. The scenes of violence are so over the top they seem almost funny.

    Notice that when Bateman does/says something bad, it's mostly ignored by others. This is played off as apathy but I thiink it isn't real.
    When he kills with the chainsaw, the next scene is him drawing that scene in a restaurant. At the end, the secretary finds his notebook with all the drawings of the things he supposedly does. The ATM tells him to feed it the cat. The gun fires way too many shots. There are a lot of clues that it's not real but just thoughts that he's had.
    One other thing, I feel like all the poeple being shallow, fake, apathetic, and materialistic is really a good definition of what "american psycho" could really mean.

      Ahh, I didn't notice those hints. That explains alot and I definitely agree with your last part. I felt like that was the movies main message.

    Leo as Bateman would've been interesting to see. Someone who was mostly doing romance/light hearted films during this time, I think he could've pulled it off. I'm happy Bale got it though.

    An interesting point about the workout scene is that there is no woman screaming during the chainsaw massacre when the camera is focused on Leatherface, which implies he has a woman screaming in his apartment while he was working out.

    Fun Fact: Patrick Bateman does have a brother named Sean who is in his own way as crazy as Patrick. For the film Rules of Attraction, they tried to get Christian Bale to do a cameo as Patrick, but he was filming some other films at the time.

    The scenes with Willem Dafoe ways seemed sort of out of place to me, but I guess they are indicators that everyone in society is self consumed and miss what's right in front of them, much like the rest of the characters in the film. I mean the scene where Bale and Dafoe are out eating, Bale is acting over the top guilty but Dafoe doesn't see it.

    The ending is meant to be ambiguous. You question whether Bateman in fact committed all those murders, or if it was all in his head. A theory I agree with is that everyone is trying to be like each other. They just let Bateman do whatever, and instead of reporting on it, it all gets painted over.

  • @glennwelsh9784
    @glennwelsh9784 2 роки тому

    The ending is intentionally ambiguous. As Patrick is psychotic, he is an unreliable narrator, which makes the audience question whether Patrick's crimes are real or psychotic delusions.
    And if his actions are real, how is he able to avoid consequences or punishment? Is the decadent high society he's part of actively protecting him by covering up his crimes? Are the people around him so self-absorbed and phony that they blinded by their wealth and privilege and don't notice Patrick's unusual behavior? Are they willfully ignoring his behavior because they'd rather keep up appearances than confront the truth about Patrick? Does Patrick's facade as a yuppie Wall Street executive make him so indistinguishable from all the other yuppie Wall Street executives that no one call tell who is actually committing Patrick's brutal acts?
